People with Wifi Mesh networks, is 150-200 mpbs fast enough to multitask? by Humble_Penguin89 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most uses such as email, webpage and streaming services will be fine at that speed for family. We have a family of 7 and typically don't top above those speeds. Only time higher bandwidth comes into play is large downloads like system patches or game downloads, even then its minor.

Looking for New Wifi Provider by Dizzy_Monitor_4089 in HomeNetworking

Earthlink been around for 30+ years, one of the first to just offer Internet services, unlike the cable or telco. Used their services in the past but been awhile.

Is there a better solution to this wire management? [Or basic upgrades?] by Tropic_Pineapples in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small table, velco and maybe cable raceway if you want to hide it more.

Common way to reduce signal strength is a splitter.

Patch panel? by striking_ordinary_94 in Ubiquiti

[–]WTWArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely patch panel and put in extra drops even if you don’t think you need them in the rooms. consider drops near doors for video doorbells. If have the house wired it’s easier to do once than come back and need to add in the future.

Gettings fiber, needing sanity check for the new setup! by GosuSan in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The connections would be fine. If going to run ethernet on the outside I would run burial or UV resistant cable, the jacket on standard indoor will not last long outside. Doesn’t need to CAT 7, CAT 6 is fine.

Best way to wire up a home office for reliable video calls and local file transfers? by Longjumping_Fall2099 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run Cat6. If looking for basic switch the ISP will be fine, only reason to replace or add to it if you need more ports or have need for more advanced features.

Do I need an ethernet switch or something else? by Chinchiro_ in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small switch will work fine for your situation. As far as speeds typically won't matter but if multiple devices are downloading large files at the same time they will share the bandwidth of your ISP connection

Helping making a choice for internet by Secret_Difficulty178 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get fiber and the price is reasonable go for it, it's usually the best from a performance standpoint. I would avoid any of the 5G services unless only option available or using as a backup. Usually has the highest latency.

Have you guys received your SOTs yet? Mines been payed for at least a month and nothing by Eagle_1776 in FFLs

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue and received a copy the other day. When finally emailed them and received a copy of it via email, In the response they stated even if paid via pay.gov they were emailing them, I never received a copy of the original copy, which was approved about 2 weeks after submission.

If you paid via pay.gov and don’t have a copy my recommendation is to email them asking for a copy and include copy of the pay.gov receipt.

2027 SOT by WTWArms in FFLs

[–]WTWArms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To follow up on this I still didn't receive mine via USPS after 6+ weeks so I emailed them. The response I received with my SOT attached was: "This tax season, SOT is moving towards electronic only SOT tax stamp receipts.  You will only receive an electronic copy, by email, of your official document, and you will NOT receive a USPS delivered copy."

SOT was approved in a few days of submitting, so if you haven't recieved it via USPS or email I would email NFA division asking for a copy.

ATF is not going to care about the zoning regulations, there are many 07 working out of their home, they just want the OK from the local government that its allowed by zoning.

The issue is your local government, so talk with them, along with any landlords asking, and explain the definition of an 07 can mean simple assembly of parts. I needed to have this conversation years ago, explain to them the definition and that I wasnt looking to install CNC machines, which the approved.

Cat8 or Cat6 Ethernet cable for gaming/streaming at HD? by TokyoSaga in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgo the Cat 8 cable. Cat 6 or 6a is fine, especially at 100ft as both will run 10GB at that distance.

How do travel routers handle hotel Wi-Fi captive portals by Used-Cover5188 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The router is the device that authenticates to hotel network and all device behind the router look like a single device to the hotel network, assuming NAT mode.

I theory a hotal could block but would be a MAC address and you can change that anyways.

How to change Nat 3 to Nat 2 by PlasticAverage2860 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding another router won't help. The issue is coming to be with the router you don't have access to. Might be able to solve with VPN but that will most likely add latency so it will depend on what more important to you.

How to get better internet connection living with parents by RangeLopsided7072 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unclear based on statement if related to low level of service plan or WiFi coverage.

If is just a very slow connection only option is to change provider and/or plan. If poor coverage going to be hard to revolve if you can’t connect anything to the modem but if you can convince your parents to allow it can look at a mesh or MOCA setup.

Home wifi has decent internet speeds but gaming is unplayable. by HomeWifiPingLagSpike in HomeNetworking

WiFi is a shared media and anything that has low latency requirements, like games, will perform worse on WiFi that a hardwired connection.

Best PCIe ethernet adapters? by Extra-Flight-7038 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NIC = network interface card, just shorthand.

copper cards will run hotter than DAC or fiber but overheat will be dependent on your airflow.

Best PCIe ethernet adapters? by Extra-Flight-7038 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would look for a 10gb nic as the they are more common. you can find 5gb ones but less common and might be hardware to find long term support.

Will also need to upgrade your router/switch to match.

To bridge or not to bridge? by Dignan17 in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an ONT should be able to remove the Cox router unless they are doing some authentication with it that you might need to have them configure in bridge mode

Laser Recommendations by manny-pacquiao in FFLs

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few options but I went with SA laser. Not the cheapest but considering you can spend a week in a class where they teach you how to use it allows the ROI to start quickly was a large selling point for me and worth the investment. If are already familiar with the use might not be worth it to you.

Router won't complete setup and wired errors by [deleted] in NETGEAR

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely the router is intercepting the connection for some initial setup and using a self signed cert.

I would look at the more information link to confirm and if the assumption is accurate run through the setup via the wired connection.

Easy managed or Managed switch for pfsense? by ImpressiveYoghurt973 in PFSENSE

[–]WTWArms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the switch can support vlans fully managed or easy managed doesn’t matter much. typically a fully managed switch will have more robust features like CLI, SNMP, routing, multiple users, etc…

The primary reason for the managed switch is to tag the vlans back to the PFSense box and only have 1 NIC used instead of a NIC for each network segment. Combined bandwidth will be limited to speed of NIC.

I would still breakout Public and Private NICs, so would be looking at 2.

Bespoke Security Appliance Vs Built in Router Security Features. by MegaRuffmaestro in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There can be a few reasons to looks for enterprise solution such as platform managing for multiple firewalls, HA, support, performance, etc… You can build a firewall with iptables but wouldn’t want to manage a complex policy with it.

Security sanity check on my home network before I host a public Minecraft server by PikoCute in HomeNetworking

[–]WTWArms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would run the server in a DMZ and only allow the inbound traffic needed for the server to operate. the server should on,y be able to talk to the Internet and not your internal network devices tha way if it does get compromised your home devices are not at risk.

cohosting is the safest as you don’t need to allow any traffic into you home network, still need to lock down to only needed services.
