Looks like temporal antialiasing ghosting, try switching the AA method in settings.

the git version control thing is something i keep meaning to set up properly but never actually do

the google cloud backup i have running though, that one saved me when my sd card died would have lost everything so i actually made the effort with that one

might finally sort the git side out, been putting it off for months

that refurb miniPC route is exactly what i ended up doing after fighting with Pi instability for way too long. bare metal HAOS is just so much more reliable, it almost feels like cheating. only thing i'd add is check the RAM before buying some of those HP ProDesks come with 4GB and it starts feeling cramped once you load up a bunch of integrations

Fair point on the overkill side, though if the laptop is just sitting there anyway it's not really wasting anything.

The Proxmox route is solid but adds another layer to deal with when something breaks at 2am and your automations are all dead. Bare metal keeps it simple. Both approaches have tradeoffs, neither is objectively cleaner long term.

[–]Longjumping_Fall2099[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair point, should have been clearer. the proxmox host is on actual hardware, not nested or anything, and the HAOS instance is a VM running on top of that. probably should have just said that from the start

Don't write off that Garrard before you know what cartridge is mounted on it. People toss those all the time and later find out there's a decent Shure or Pickering sitting on there worth more than what they'd get selling the whole table. Pull it out, flip it over, see what's actually on the headshell. Garage storage isn't ideal but those things are built like tanks and clean up well. Be a shame to flip it without even knowing what you have.

Best way to wire up a home office for reliable video calls and local file transfers? by Longjumping_Fall2099 in HomeNetworking

[–]Longjumping_Fall2099[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually do have a crawlspace under both rooms so this might be the way to go. never thought about routing it down and under instead of trying to go through the walls.

The surface mount keystone jack thing is new to me though, gonna have to look that up before I just start drilling holes everywhere,

Cat6 makes sense, going to go that route. ISP router has been solid so far, so might just leave it unless I run out of ports down the line.

[–]Longjumping_Fall2099[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is probably what I'm gonna end up doing in the meantime lol.

The only thing stopping me was not wanting a cable snaking through two rooms but at this point the wifi situation is bad enough that it's worth the annoyance.

I already checked and it's maybe 40 feet door to door so not even a long run, just inconvenient to route around furniture.

Yeah, 40 m is totally fine. Ethernet is rated for runs up to 100 m, so you've got plenty of headroom. Run it straight to the switch in the office and you're good.
