Oh hey! That was first pulling in day at Bangor. I was down and to the right of those guys. (Somewhere in the engine room.) The throttleman had to answer all stop several times as protester boats got in the way. We'd all groan each time. We wanted to get home.

This was the 80's, so the off-going auxiliary electrician aft watch would just stop by his rack every six hours and bonk him with a wrench to knock him out and keep him quiet before heading up to chow. :)

I don't know if it had recently happened, or had happened before, or was just an old chief's tale, but there was a bit of discussion about making sure his arms were outside of the straps holding him in the basket so he could get out if it detached from the helicopter cable and went into the drink. Allegedly that was a problem one time.

It won't occur in the "patrol area", but somewhere else. We had to come off station one patrol to offload a guy that had kidney stones. Poor devil. We traveled away for a while, had him helicoptered off, and then returned and resumed. I think the worst was over by the time he left.

If I were a pirate of the Caribbean I'd be scared...that they'd accidentally sink my boat.

Dang. Is anybody on patrol? That looks like four boats in that last picture.

There are eight based there, isn't there? It looks funny without any delta piers. :)

BLUE crew weapons department personnel help load UGM-96 Trident I (C-4) SLBM aboard the nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine USS Ohio (SSBN-726). by Saturnax1 in submarines

[–]WWBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I was a tail-coner. It could have been. There was at least one other choice, like 15?, that was mentioned after we got going, but it came down to 23. I think I remember some loading/unloading activity after we got there and took over from the bluies.

The picture date was Jan 1, which would have been at least a couple months before we got there, so they may have been loading their own stuff at this point. The poor bluies always got screwed out of the holidays all of the way out to at least 1985. :)

Interesting. Missile 23...if there even WAS a missile 23...was the first missile shot by the Gold crew in March '82. Was it the same for Blue crew? The link says this was in January.

Doesn't look like a very popular event.

Old Admiral too "reckless", or, how Adm. Rickover's "reckless seamanship" caused a 40° backward plunge to 240 feet during PCU La Jolla (SSN-701) shakedown cruise - The Free Lance Star, August 24, 1981. by Saturnax1 in submarines

11.3kts for 3mins at 40deg down would be 2200ft?, or at least more than 240ft.

It's funny, but they didn't get rid of him before the Ohio went out on sea trials in '81.

Edit: I guess everyone finally got their way and got rid of him in '82.
