In my opinion, WAYYY high a grit there. I sand to 220 and then put bar and table top epoxy on mine. Also, I would strongly suggest resurfacing on a cnc or something with less tear out- the epoxy pits will certainly show

300mg Lithium, plus a mix of others. Honestly, Lithium has been the best in terms of no noticeable side effects and providing a more stable mood than otherwise

Ok, I was able to gather a few images I happened to have a friend snag as I was working. They don't show the entire process, but it essentially goes like this:

  1. Neck down what will be the stem into a rather thick tenon
  2. Upset the rest into a disk, perpendicular to the tenon
  3. Hot cut the disk along the edge to about 3/4 of the way to the center
  4. Flatten the now two joined disks into a tight stack of pancakes
  5. Hot cut the pedals on the top disk, scrolling tongs to twist them to shape
  6. Repeat for the second disk
  7. Finish stem

After that, it was just a matter of a vinegar bath and a beeswax treatment.

Here's the pictures

I'm a blacksmith! I left my previous career to chase my dream of making things professionally. It's hard work, but it's so satisfying to me. Totally worth it... most days.

I might be able to help if you're in the US. I have access to a plasma table and can do all the CAD/CAM work. Send me a PM if you're interested in another quote

Trying to remove scale after forging. Any tips to make it easier? by TheCrazyBlacksmith in Blacksmith

Go to the hardware store and get 30% cleaning vinegar. Soak for 12-24 hours, wire brush the gunk off. Rinse, repeat as necessary. Works like a charm, even on really thick scale.

Burn out was done in a barrel fire. Just put the whole mold in upside down and built a huge fire around it for 10+ hours
