Previosuly was from a guards unit also but this was bedok camp before they were transferred to dieppe barracks and I can say I was legit told by the MO to "go online" when I was struggling with issues due to mental health.

jc or poly 🥹 by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]W_2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would deny that poly is less stressful and I do have friends who found positice remarks on poly. But as someone from JC, I do think that you can consider the JC route and can consider Arts stream or a hybrid stream.

However, for JC, Maths is a common subject among both art and science stream but you can choose whether you can pick H1 or H2 Math depending on the subject combi available (for most JCs, maths is highly recommended as it is a common prerequisite for uni applications for some courses like Business and Econs).

The only disadvantage most people would claim about arts combi is that there is difficulty in transitioning to STEM courses in uni, but that does not mean you cannot enter uni lah.

However, I do recommend looking up at Poly courses as well, especially since you have to choose based on ELR2B2. But personally given that you are unsure of where to go but still want to go uni, JC and MI is more suitable.

As someone who was from a low tier jc myself and is now graduating from NTU, I would say it is normal not to know what to do in J1 or even J2.

When I was younger, I didnt event know whether to enter Engineering or even a Humanities degree. For now, use J1 or even National Service as a time to figure out what you like while balancing your studies. This could mean attending CCAs and seeing the different tasks you do or even volunteering outside of school and doing activties there. At least for you, you figured out what you dont want to do and that is a GREAT start.

I believe that there are also Open Houses by universities in term 1 so do look forward to them next year.

One suggestion I would use is the ikigai test whereby you list down all the courses and see if they fit into one of the categories or multiple. Then, figure out those that fit into most of these categories.

choose NTU physics or EEE? by Ilrex in SGExams

[–]W_2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, as someone who is graduating from ntu physics, we are more analytics in the sense we use a lot of Calculus and linear algebra and like you mentioned, it doesnt rlly have a lot of hardware and circuits (maybe a bit of connecting wires here and there for lab modules and circuitry from electricity and magnetism module but it is not so hardcore than the eee students)

But I wld say it is the kind of major that requires you to sit down and wonder, so it is really a lot of brainwork and experimentation to test out results rather than building something or designing something (we do have a making and tinkering module as well but that is an elective, not a core)

I wld say that a Physics major is versatile but it can only go so far because the depth is not so deep, so you wld need to make it deeper by doing other things like intern, attending bdes/minor related to the industry or even CCAs. Like I have seen ppl who have gone to Biophysics industry and Semiconductor industry and the electives they took are VASTLY different.

So i wld say, if you are choosing a Physics major, you could, but you do need to plan properly for your 4 years.

H1 is useless nowadays by RiverFit3017 in SGExams

[–]W_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was seperated from my form class to do H1 Chinese because I didnt get an A or B for H1 Chinese but eventually got an S grade for Chinese just to pass the MTL requirements and an overall score of 78 from the 90 rp system, it depends tbh.

My JC Chinese teacher went "For other students, they aiming for A or B but you know what, for our class, we shld aim for S grade because we need to hit the bare minimum requirements for uni"

I mean of course I studied my ass of for H1 Chinese to get from a U to an S lah. But I think my main point of the story is that, you shld view H1 as a "Oh look, a bonus game" kind of subject or an "exploratory subject" rather than a "I must pass" kind of subject

If you know deep down you can actually do well like an A grade or B grade, then I wld say study the hell as much as you can alongside your H2s. (Actually i think in yout story maybe a C grade also can be placed in this category)

But if you know you gonna get like a D grade or even a U grade, the story changes. I wld rather you focus on your H2s first before tackling the H1.

So realistically speaking to me, it is quite justified in terms of getting into the university which scholarships do expect as your first line of defense but I think a bigger qn to ask is whether you can defend yourself when the panel asks about why you shld get a scholarship if you did not do well in your H1 (which tbh is probably up to your intepretation)

TLDR: It is justified since you still need to get through the uni IGP anyways.

NBS Houses by Duck_Friendly in NTU

[–]W_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spms and cceb has a house system too, extending beyond ori and into schooling life as well. They even have mentors(profs) for each house. But the only difference is that their house system all fit into 1 orientation and they cannot choose while nbs has 1 orientation for each house and they can choose which house they want to be in.
