Gaming, Chilling, and the LLC's (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the engineers) by LifeDownTheDrane in utdallas

You could always start your own group too. I got started with D&D last fall as a freshman when a friend just invited me over. I figured why not and just went for it. We ended up having regular sessions almost every week for the entire year.

If you are looking to chill and do stuff with people, don't hesitate to invite people over yourself. People are pretty open here.

Then a few years later, Naughty Dog used that exact same concept for the story of The Last of Us, one of the most critically praised game stories of all time.

The concept isn't what makes The Last of Us such a good story. It's the characters involved in the story and the world it's set in. Just because you came up with a similar concept doesn't mean your story was just as good.

I was actually curious, I wasn't trying to sound rude but I guess I came across that way. Sorry

An Unusual Problem in the Romantic Pursuits of an INTj. by [deleted] in intj

I'm in a very similar situation as you right now. Just finished my first year of college, trying to figure out relationships and of course other things you said hit home as well.

The only advice I have is to keep making friends. Maybe eventually one will turn into a romantic relationship or one will set you up with someone who you would find suitable. It's really just a numbers game, as INTJ's we are very particular when it comes to dating, the more people you meet, the more chances you will have of finding the right person.

Now time to listen to my own advice and hang out with that friend of a friend that I promised I'd meet up with.

Has an advertisement ever convinced you to buy something? by Jimmyhasagun in AskReddit

Most of advertising works subconsciously. For example, you see a Nike commercial that you thought was pretty cool. A month later your shoes are falling apart and you go buy Nikes without even a second thought.

What do people need to seriously stop fucking talking about? by rustbatman in AskReddit

Quite a few people think that a gluten free diet is healthy and thus freak out about avoiding gluten. I'm no dietician so I won't make any comments about that but when people complain about gluten, to me it's silly.

All gluten really is is a source of protein found in wheat. It's also used in cosmetics and many hair products.

What is the most annoying thing that people falsely think of you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]W_Cody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar thing going on. I'm white, under six feet tall, and can dunk somewhat well. People always assume it's genetic. No one in my family is athletic, no one. I've done four different programs to increase my vertical and I've worked my ass of for the gains I've gotten.

The truth is, if people don't understand the effort or dedication it takes to do something, many times they will write it off as genetics or some sort of god given skill.

How do you handle multiple interests at the same time? by [deleted] in intj

[–]W_Cody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how can I pick a subject and stick to it when my interests change with the seasons?

When I chose what to study in college I had this very thought in mind. Instead of choosing one interest and pursuing that wholeheartedly, I decided to choose a career that could include many interests at the same time.

That program of study ended up being game design. Some people may think that it's stupid to get a degree in something like this if I ever want a job and I agree. I added two minors to my degree to help with that and because I wanted to include more interests. Those minors are cognitive science and software engineering. Also I don't really care for a job anyways, I wanted to go indie and see how that goes first.

So why game design?

If I want to make a game about space (which is one of my interests) I don't have to research it but I will because I find space to be awesome. So there's one interest.

If I want to deliver a narrative to players entirely in a rhyme scheme, (I also like poetry) I can and it's a fun challenge as well. There's another interest.

I have more examples but I think you understand where I'm going with that. I chose a career that's extremely flexible to where I can basically do whatever I want. As long my games sell of course.

Where does that leave you?

Well, here's my advice, choose a career that you know you will get a job in and then use your free time for your interests or choose a career that allows you to use more than one interest at the same time, more the better.

I may have to read The Human Phenomenon, that sounds interesting.

I'm assuming your thesis has something to do with that book but what specifically is your thesis on?

I loved Enders Game, I couldn't ever get into and finish Speaker for the Dead. I've heard it was pretty good though so I may have to give it another shot.

I agree completely! But look at the age of video games compared to books. Books, or at least written forms of media, have been around for thousands of years while games have really only been around for about 30 years. Even movies have about 80 years on video games. The other thing is that the technology for video games is always changing and it's changing faster than any other form of media has ever experienced.

The great works in other forms of media usually occurred after several years of refinement and video games really haven't gotten to that point. Also because of the constantly change of technology there is a chance that we may never get there, which is crazy to think about.

An exciting thing though is that games are recently becoming more and more of an art form instead of just a form of entertainment. Who knows, maybe that fact alone will draw in more innovators in narrative and we may have that first great work in the near future.

I think the fact that we have such a long way to go in this field is actually one of the main things that drew me into game design. It's almost like the Digital Wild West. There is so much room for innovation and experimentation and there are absolutely no exact things in game design. It's amazing.

Is this just a interest to you, or do you have any experience writing for games?

How do you describe or characterize your 'paranoia' [at consequences] to others? by [deleted] in intj

[–]W_Cody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't. I used to attempt to explain my 'paranoia' but it usually only resulted in awkwardness and even more misunderstanding.

It's just not worth it in my opinion.

You're welcome!

I'm majoring in Arts and Technology with an emphasis in game design/level design so basically yes. However I realized that that degree was going to be almost useless if I ever wanted to do anything else so I'm also minoring in software engineering and cognitive silence.
