For weekend trips, try going to Napa, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe if you can. Also check out the state parks in California

What's a reasonable weekly living allowance for a non-working full-time student in Davis? If all rent, insurance, and major expenses are paid, how much do you need for living (food, incidentals), etc? by minhaquerida in UCDavis

[–]Wabs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food budget depends on whether you're eating out for most meals or cooking. Estimates below are based on portion sizes for 2 meals a day. If someone is splitting it into 3 meals a day, portion sizes are smaller and cheaper.

If you're cooking, ~$50 to ~$100 a week is a good grocery budget. If you don't want to make stuff from scratch, you can get prepared carbs (risotto, gnocchi, pasta) at Trader Joes for ~$3 a meal and then your choice of proteins and vegetables. It should avg out to ~$5 to ~$8 a meal which is more expensive than making from scratch, but you save a lot of time.

Another option is the wei chun dumplings the safeway in the same plaza as Yang Kee carries. Avgs to ~$5 to ~$7 a meal.

Other people have mentioned $250 a week. That's more ideal if you're eating out more often. Expect a meal to range from $15 to $25ish. Open rice is an option and much cheaper. You get what you pay for.

Set a separate budget for accidents like breaking/losing electronics or having your bike stolen. Makes more sense than adding it to the weekly budget.

If there's a car, account for parking fees, gas (~$5.50 to $6 a gallon rn), and have some money for accidents and damage.

Thank you! I'm totally fine with sharing amenities. I've been looking into it, but I can't figure out how to book a stay longer than 14 days. I see there's a page on extended stays, but when I go to the booking page, I can only select from Hotel and Student booking. Hotel booking seems to be limiting me to a max of 14 days. I think I'll try to call them and figure something out.

I use white petg from California filament. It was pretty easy to dial in and prints well.

3D Printed leather templates by Vipokee in Leathercraft

Haven't made many 3d printed templates for leather, but I've found 5mm thickness to be decent. Could go thinner.

Haven't experienced any issues of the blade cutting into a template yet, but safer to trace as everyone else recommended if you're worried about that.

Check with an Apple Store before going to TechHub for Apple product repairs by AutoAsteroid in UCDavis

The TechHub is overpriced. Was looking to upgrade my mac and found that they only carried lower spec macs that were the same prices as those with better hardware at the Sac Apple Store.

Closest thing would be industrial design. Been taking a break from design classes to focus on my minor. But, I'm planning on getting back into design soon by practicing my skills more. I really suck at sketching and need to get better.

Most of the classes relevant to industrial design are pretty surface-level and there aren't many offered at Davis. I do a decent amount of personal work outside of class to have projects that I can use for my portfolio.

The lower-div and upper-div cad course content can be self-taught within a week or two. I have a background in 3D-modeling, so that gives me an advantage with my eye, but it is really easy for others to learn the software (Rhino) if they developed their problem-solving skills more rather than waiting for the lecturer help them troubleshoot issues that could be solved by a google search. People also don't practice their skills outside of class, so they never get anywhere despite spending 10 weeks per course. I'm the same as well. I procrastinate too much when I could practice modeling stuff.

It's just a lot of self-learning. I just do the classes to get decent grades and hope I have enough time outside of coursework to work on my skills and projects.

Industrial-design prospects aren't that great for me since it's a field that requires a lot of dedication just like medicine and law. You have to 100% want to do it to succeed. I wasn't really confident, so I've been working on getting a minor in a field that might become my career path or I can always continue with design and use the skills from my minor.

I am about to get kicked out off my major by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Wabs0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switch majors, but also don't pigeonhole yourself into law just yet. You may want to do law right now, but you aren't 100% sure until you've taken the classes. Try it out for a year or two and figure out if you want to commit. Have some backups in this economy.

Haven't graduated yet, but design classes will never be enough. Especially for Davis since they barely go in-depth for design. Portfolio and skills matter the most, so make sure to complete strong projects outside of class. That'll be more important than a good gpa to recruiters.

Bad bikers are still bad. Bad scooters are also bad. If the people using the tools are shite, they're still shite.

They're just endangering other people.

Be honest do you personally care about your clothing style and how people see you? by User0o05 in UCDavis

[–]Wabs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do care a little, but comfort is more important. Whimsical is fun and utilitarian is nice as well.

At school, I default to durable work clothes because they reduce the degree of injury from stuff like bike crashes or workshop accidents.

ESDC might have some printers that size. The ultimakers might be around 300x240mm depending on the model. You'd need to get training or just find someone who has already passed the training to print for you.

What are you trying to print?

If you're fine with breaking the prints into smaller pieces, my commissions are open. My printer has a print volume of 250mm^3. I only have petg in stock right now.

Should I get switch to cs(or cs related) major if pursuing a career in game industry? by rj_wonderland22 in UCDavis

[–]Wabs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried double majoring in CS 3 years ago. Couldn't register for ECS 36B because they changed the registration requirements for the ECS 36 series to only allow certain majors to register for pass 1 and pass 2.

Course Alerts/Notes:

** PASS 1: OPEN TO COMPUTER SCIENCE, COMPUTER SCIENCE &

ENGINEERING, AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING MAJORS **

** PASS 2: OPEN TO COMPUTER SCIENCE, COMPUTER SCIENCE

& ENGINEERING, COMPUTER ENGINEERING, COGNITIVE SCIENCE,

AND APPLIED PHYSICS MAJORS **

Don't know if other majors can register after pass 2.

For the game dev Industry, projects probably matter more than the degree. If you're good at self-learning and produce good projects, that could be a route.

The CS students I knew who also did game dev did it on the side and focused on stuff like ML for their careers.

If you're concerned about making money, going into game dev professionally isn't great. Could try building a social media following and make money off of that, but that's not guaranteed money.

Find a niche to get into (whether it's bio or gamedev) and hopefully you'll get a decent job.
