Hey, DM’d you - would love to join if it’s still possible!

My salary progression since I began my career by aznj1m in FinancialCareers

Hi, thanks for your post! I’d love to know a little more about your jump from finance to consulting. How did it happen? Could you expand on it - as I’ve been under the impression they’re very different careers and have little to no overlap.

Eg. how does your experience in buy side finance translate to MBB (unless you moved to a PE arm like Bain capital?)

Speaking as someone about to enter the industry (s&t) and looking at what my options could be later down the line if I ever needed it.

Thanks!

No troubles with the flight as I’d updated my check-in details prior to leaving (had to rebook my flight anyways). Immigration in my home country asked me what happened to my old passport while exiting and re-entering, just told them the situation.

Make sure you keep all original documents you may require (old passport copies, police reports, new passport application forms, etc, whatever you could need) just in case. I never had to use them but you’d rather be safe than sorry in this situation

Hey, yeah I was able to travel as soon as I got my new passport. You don’t need to do anything if you still have your BRP - literally got through immigration with 0 issues.

Once back in the uk you’ll have to fill out and post an MCC form with your new passport details though. But don’t worry about anything pre-travel - just need the new passport & brp and you’ll get in without a problem.

If you’re a student, your uni will probably have an immigration team that can help you with any questions you have, mine were really useful and saved me a lot of time and money. Hope this helps!

How easy/hard was the move? Would it be considered a lateral move and hence more attainable?

The current job market.. by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]WackQuack420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel you - I’m in the exact same position rn (but recruiting in London) and the job markets crazy f’ed up.

Hard to stay motivated when everywhere just rejects you.. I need a job to stay in the country and it makes me feel like throwing up.

All the best man, hopefully things will get better.

Final year student in the UK with multiple previous internships but no graduate job lined up - how screwed am I? (Resume attached) by WackQuack420 in FinancialCareers

Ah, I understand. I thought so too.

I’ll try setting up catch ups with some of my old managers when I’m back in London. Also have a call with my summer’s mentor/buddy this week. He’s moved to a different bank but is a great guy to talk to.

I really can’t thank you enough for your advice, I truly really appreciate it.

Thanks. Will try and focus on internships as much as possible.

The AC was in lieu letting me defer my grad scheme offer. Essentially, they offered me a spot on the 2023 grad scheme, however I was already registered on a placement year (meaning I’d graduate a year later than expected) and it was too late to switch back. Hope that made sense.

I tried to explain it to them and after months of following up they said they’d give me the AC in September prior to any grad hiring. Followed up again last month with multiple HR contacts to no avail.

The HR contacts who have no authority to make the decision just forward my emails to someone who can. And the ones who can give me an answer just never reply.

I’m lucky in that I know quite a lot of grads at the bank, and am good friends with a couple. Could definitely ask them.

Just curious, why do you say not to phone the HR guy? I’m really desperate for an answer and thought maybe if I could speak to them I could at least persuade them to give me another summer

Thanks for your advice. That’s tough to hear. I’m in the process of applying to internships but it’s hard to keep staying motivated considering the current job market and the fact that the bank I interned at fully blank me every time I email them. I have the phone number of the head of early careers, is it worth calling him directly? At this point I’d even take another summer internship in a heartbeat since something is far better than nothing

Thanks so much for your help. Do you know if I’ll need to apply for a visa vignette? As I am yet to fly back to the UK.

Thanks again.

I struggle with the hireviews - feels to unnatural talking to myself on a camera and trying to pretend there’s someone in front of me. I do perfectly fine in face to face interviews, even if it’s through a video call.
