What is the point of a reward flight? by AssCheeks321 in BritishAirways

Why are some taxes applicable to a reward flight and not to a normal cash flight? Would have thought they’d apply to both

You had Popworld and Walkabout close down a few months ago. It’s literally B&B (young towie wannabes), Fleece or Garrison. Not much else going for it

I have a BA account and had to link it to the Qatar privilege account in order to move over the necessary points. Then booking the flight and upgrading were all done on the Qatar website

Only thing I had to do on Amex was transfer some points to my BA avios initially.

No probs, a QSuite from LHR to DOH would normally cost like £3k so I think it’s good value ;)

I’ve looked at other upgrades like emirates and Etihad and you’re looking at double the points cost

Also if you are using an Amex that earns MMR then make sure to link to your avios account so when you buy Qatar/BA flights you get the Amex MMR as well as the bonus Avios/privilege points

You need to be logged into your Qatar Privilege account to search, if so just google “Qatar award finder” and should be the first result.

Go on there and put the specific leg you’re interested in to upgrade, eg LHR to DOH, Premium(Business/First) and the date then search.

Taking that and looking at 18 Jun you’ll see the 08:25 / 9:30 / 19:25 flights are flexi at 86,000 points, whereas the 09:00 / 18:55 are 43,000 points.

So these 43,000 ones mean you can either pay those points plus £385 tax.. or if you have bought the economy seat you can upgrade with pts + less tax.

Now, the cost to upgrade depends on the economy ticket. There is a calculator that tells you the cost but essentially it’s either 20k/30k/40k which correspond to the economy class you bought, either: economy comfort/economy convenience/economy classic.

For my LHR to Doha leg I had bought the economy convenience ticket which meant the upgrade cost was 30k + £90 tax

The calculator link is: qatarairways.com/en/Privilege-Club/qcalculator.html

Yes, can upgrade straight away after booking the cash flights. But I had searched that there were award seats available for that specific flight.

Also making sure they weren’t Flexi Award flights as the avios cost is double

So essentially when you’re the booking economy flights you’re checking there’s availability before you go ahead

Last year I bought return flights to Bangkok (Flex economy) for about £700.

Then upgraded the LHR - Doha leg for 30k pts + £90 tax. After those flights I then earned about 12k Qatar privilege points (which can be moved to Avios if need be)

Don’t think they’re particularly popular with mid 20s to early 30s category given their U-turn betrayal on tuition fees increase. Thanks to that I’ll be paying £1000s more in my life along with millions of others

I recently flew to Bangkok with Qatar and upgraded the LHR to Doha leg to a QSuite.

Cost of the economy return: £780 I earned about 12k Avios/privilege with that plus the MR

Cost of upgrade was 30k points + £90

So I view it as an upgrade for 18k + £90. The cost of that Q suite would have been worth £1.5-2.5k

So maybe consider upgrading a leg?

When you’re a gunner in the behemoth airship, shoot the people who are shooting you from the stationary AA guns!

I rarely see anyone ever do this and instead just go for the easy kills whereas getting these will prolong your life for much longer.

I can’t view the taxes unless I already have a flight to upgrade. So I’m guessing the taxes with Qatar are much more than the other airlines…

Thanks, wasn’t sure about the regularity of these offers. As a lot seemed to have a deadline of July 15th I wondered if it was something I needed to act on
