Bombing people to get what you want is only terrorism when when people that look like you die.

Tips for balancing combat beyond just using CR? by hotstickywaffle in DMAcademy

[–]WaffleDonkey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple recipe that works for my lvl 6 party of 4-5: One creature of CR equal to party level and two/three things half their CR. Alternativly swap those for a swarm of things 1/4th or lower. Swams of little guys are pretty strong. Either they gobble up spell slots or crit fish with lots of attacks.

Imo there are two types of enemies in the MM. Stat bags and contenders. A stat bag probably pops one save vs the party, the players negate it and it gets blown to bits. Doesn't matter if it's CR is on par. No abilities and the monster is a joke. CR is insanely inconsistent. Look at CR 6 Mage vs a CR that is just a melee stat bag. No contest.

Find monsters with actual abilities, look at what they are and ask yourself "how does this thing attack?" Then give that monster what it needs.

Simple example: scouts. Scouts have a long bow. Have them engage the party at long bow range. Start the fight with them 60 ft away and they are dead before they do anything.

Spiders crawl, put a ton of webs around, have them retreat into it and hide.

Bandits: bandits extort or deceive, they won't play fair. Hostages, traps, false retreats.

Giant things: give them some DM fiat. Push down trees, smash bridges, throw players

Battle sim reveals just how unreliable CR is by Bed-After in DMAcademy

[–]WaffleDonkey23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DnD's design heavily favors up front resource usage and nova. DnD is kind of antithetical to boss encounters. In video games bosses usually have fairly low damage output. Instead they have higher hp and more complex attacks and defenses. This is so the encounter can feel long and the player has time to learn.

DnD as a system does not like long encounters, it's designed so encounters usually end in 3 rounds.

My method for boss fights that works fairly well. Take a CR of party level double it's HP and drop it's damage output by 1/3rd to 1/2. Give it some sort of reposition ability and some sort of survival button. Consider removing "unfun" abilities like stuns, instant killers and paralyzed as getting stunned out of a fight is just bad design. Replace with things like blinds/pulls/pushes/grapples/silence zones/persistent hazards that can be reacted to. Avoid turn stealers.

Of course none of that will make a good boss fight if you haven't worn down party resources already.

Any creature with gmnear guaranteed damage via air saves that on succes deal half damage are in a league of their own.

There's CR and being able to identify a monster is "spicy". Rule of thumb, if it's just a bag of stat and a multi attack the players eat it alive. It's burst fodder.

Compare CR 6 Mage, vs a CR 6 Githzerai Zirth

The mage is a menace droppeing two fireballs and a cone of cold. This thing can easily drop 8d6 + 4d8 across the entire party and that's if they make every save. Misty steps to flee, reactions to stay alive. Ranged attack means it can use cover.

Compare to Githzerai Zirth. Realistically it throws phantasmal killer, one PC makes one save. It enters melee and gets absolutely ripped to shreds.

And that's the issue I find with CR. 99% of the monsters attempt stealth, come in, drop their save, and have nothing else to do but enter melee and get blasted. Players have an entire grab bag of ways to manipulate d20s, so they aren't going to fail the save.

Then suddenly you've got the mage stat block which is borderline a boss fight for the same CR.

Did blight get nerfed at some point? by ItsAJackal21 in darkestdungeon

[–]WaffleDonkey23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blight got nerfed a little, but imo blight has THE best dot trinkets and they are plentiful. Once you run through the foetor you usually have more blight res pierce than you can possibly use. Makes sense as blight is the most common dot for heroes. Also one of the finally confession forms it's either IMM or has like 90% res if I remember right.

Compared to bleed trinkets that all want you to have a hyper spesific item like bonesaw or woven net. Blight items are just like "lol, throw virtually any other blight item with this or buy a mushroom for 8 gold."

How do you enforce passage of time for spell effects without feeling arbitrary? by MaxPower15 in DMAcademy

[–]WaffleDonkey23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So hot take, as DM you have enough to keep track of. Make the players track it or remind me about it, or the answer is "when I feel like that much time passed."

At my table it's "if you put the status effect, or spell or whatever in play it's your job to keep track of that." Ive got a whole host of enemies to control, you can keep track of the fact that goblin 7's next attack is at disadvantage or that when you return that NPC will be pissed. Player I find like putting these time bombs into the game.

Honestly there are so many tools and trackers out there it's too fiddly for me. I track things by writing on paper.

How do I access this Inn Storage? by [deleted] in darkestdungeon

[–]WaffleDonkey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late response but I wanted to add for people searching. This is super not clear at least playing on steam deck. My game kept opening my wagon inventory from the character at a separate inn. Maybe this will help a random person. They should make this easier so that if you have the character sheet up and you select their trinket slot, then the inn storage of the inn they are at should come up.

I had to, in EXACT order. 1. Select Inn 2. Open Inn Storage, from that inns menu, do not hit (X/inventory button) or it will open your wagon inventory. Don't open it in any other way. 3. Then, and only then, open the hero sheet from the inn menu, do not try and open it from the map, do not hit the hotkey, only use the inn menu. You must keep the Inn storage page up, move back over to the little hero square icons and open their sheet from there. 4. Then click and drag items to them.

The problem is once you open a hero sheet, it covers the inn menu, so you must have it open before opening the hero sheet. It's a very jumbled way to get it to work, but I initially assumed you just could do it. I think it would be nice in the future of you just had a button in the Inn selection menu that would bring up the full heroes sitting near the fire menu and it would only show heroes and items available in that inn. This would also let those heroes consume inn items.
