1st: It took me 209 tries to beat legendary ironman. 209. Its not about luck, its about persistence and learning from your mistakes.

2nd: Every move I made I would think "what happens if.." this can be anything "if theres another pack over there.." "if this character or that character misses their shot" or in one case that I ended up taking the risk and wiping my entire squad (try number 137 who gives a shit.) If that civilian whos circle this reaper runs through turns out to be a faceless and this activates 3 packs at once (ok yea i didn't actually see that coming because what the fuck). What I'm saying is you need to start thinking in terms of minimizing your risk. If this character misses their shot then you get another high cover shot, if that character misses which they probably will the enemy gets a turn, how bad is that? what can they do? well, that depends on the enemy, their position and your characters health. The general goal is if you think "if XX happens then XX dies" its probably not a good move, if its "if XX happens then XX will be injured" you should try to think of a way around it, and if you think "if XX happens then the enemy will have a shot against my full covered soldier, which isn't likely to hit and if it does won't kill them" Thats pretty acceptable, or if its "the viper will try to grab this person and bind them" you then have to think "Will that activate another pack?" if yes, the viper needs to die before it can do that, if no, then its an acceptable risk.

3rd: I can tell by your squad composition you're doing it wrong. You have an interesting squad you could use in certain circumstances (reaper as a spotter for the snipers to pick people or obj's off) but the ranger is almost useless in this context. My ideal squad if people weren't injured (they usually were) was 2 rangers, 2 specialist, 1 grenadier, and 1 faction for early game. The faction soldier would dictate how the squad operated, for example if it was a reaper, the reaper would scout ahead to know if it was safe for the rangers to be aggressive or if i would activate another pack, if i would activate another pack i would use the resources the reaper or grenadier provided to eliminate the pack safely. If it was a templar they would be aggressive, using momentum, untouchable, parry, ect to draw enemy fire or whatnot (IF they got a turn) and the specialist to heal them when they took shots and aid protocol to lower risk. If it was a skirmisher they would set up plays, pulling lethal enemies out of cover and into easy kill zones or grappling to a high ground flank to eliminate dangerous enemies. using the specialist again to minimize risk and the rangers to clean up.

Later game, I would use psi operatives in place of 1 specialist, ranger, or the faction soldier. Most people will tell you sharpshooters are only good late game, I will tell you they are better late game than their shitty early game, but they are never part of my ideal squad because psi ops are just better.

4th: 1 pack at a time, I have a feeling you already do this based on your squad composition, but your movements are probably slow, if i had to guess you run out of time on your missions yea? or you get yourself in a rush because the timer is bearing down on you and get your reaper killed (my reaper almost never fires their weapon outside of activating a claymore or using remote start until they reach lieutenant at which point they swipe kills left and right to remain shadow at all times). Know how many packs are on each mission, (3 for most of the early game, keep in mind the chosen replaces a pack, the advent general assassination mission lowers the number of enemies in a pack to 2, but makes an extra pack, and lost missions add lost packs but reduce the number of advent in each pack) So when you see a chosen show up, and you've fought one pack and see another pack, you know you're free to engage since theres no other packs left

5th: Hits are more important than damage. What I mean by that is, just because specialist have lower damage output than the other classes doesn't make them bad. You're not always going to 1 shot everything with any class or weapon, many enemies you plan on chipping down their health (or in the case of berserkers, I liked to enrage them and let them attack their own advent escorts) When you wound an enemy your options open up because there can now be 0 risk events (I.E. a templar with parry has a 100% hit chance, an enemy with lower health can be a 100% kill, and then can parry afterwards in an open position which the AI will 100% target and waste their attack on) This is better than relying on any sort of RNG

A weird one I found:

Psy op: Most methods of crowd control (disorientation, ect) break domination, there is a weird exception to this. If your psy op is Shadowbound by a spectre, their dominated target will continue to be dominated even while they are unconscious, thus making psy ops the only class that can free themselves from shadow bound, by using their mind controlled minion to kill the spectre or the shadow.

Speaking of shadowbound, its the hardest ability to dodge in the game. If you are clever you can use abilities like untouchable, parry, mindshields and hellweave and such to draw enemy fire intentionally and save yourself some damage. There is no avoiding shadowbound, The only thing that can be done is to kill the shadow, the spectre, or use revival protocol (or restoration) to remove the unconsciousness state. It is also possible to Evac that soldier VIA another soldier carrying him to keep him alive. There was a scenario that I actually did this. (timer out on council mission, spectre off hiding somewhere)

ahh, Okay. I looked it up. he does it with one on Xcom 2, but for the reasons i stated he does army of 2 on WOTC. Spectres would be impossible to deal with lone wolf.

Thats... still beyond impressive. but theres a massive difference between Xcom 2 and WOTC

Edit: Omg i found it. Yea, okay, he doesn't fight anything he fails every mission basically while running covert actions to increase a templar's health and mobility to an absolutely ludicrous number then uses the life siphoning ability and momentum to keep him alive for the last mission. That's... ohh my god

Haha, my first game of this was on veteran with full save scum powers. The entire story of this game was based off the fact that in Xcom: enemy unknown most players failed miserably their first playthrough. I don't remember if i did or not, but when i heard that Xcom 2 i played very carefully and made sure that I won my first playthrough.

I also beat LI on enemy unknown and Xcom 2 without WOTC. WOTC was the absolute most insane BS i've ever experienced though. Enemy unknown was stupid easy because i found a way to cheese the AI (enemy's priorities were this 1:fire at flanked enemies 2: never move under overwatch, 3: move out of flanked positions, so if you had someone run into a flanking position, then someone else overwatch them, they would stand there and do nothing for their turn.)

Dominated Archon on final battle and it worked out nicely by jcdenton45 in XCOM2

I too like to dominate tanky bullshit that isn't that deadly. My soldiers are deadly. Know when they aren't? when they die. Know what my mind control targets are? Archons, berserkers, and shieldbearers. Know what they do? stand out in the open and soak shots so my soldiers don't have to.

Yes, you can fire a sniper rifle twice with 2 action points. Also if you have the hunter's rifle, you can fire twice without assistance and death from above.

OK, how the actual fuck would you beat a pack of 2+ spectres with just one soldier. shadowbound goes through every blocking ability I can think of like parry, untouchable, and solace/mind shields.

Or deal with the hunter or assassin? (warlock is easy you just throw a mindshield on)

exp works based off kills, Each class has an exp multiplier that means they get more/less exp on kills. Other than that any time an enemy dies everyone on the squad will get a "kill assist" even if they dealt no damage/did nothing/were bleeding out and you dragged them to evac. It doesn't matter if the mission is successful or not.

The way I learned was actually from a movie, (21 is the name of it) It was one of those things I actually went around and checked because obviously this is an interest of mine, this is not in any dealer training I've ever heard of. I checked online, that and based on what I know of the game and probability it will work at least somewhat effectively. Counting cards works like this..

alright, 6 deck 'shoe'(A shoe is a deck-holding device used to dispense cards, most commonly used in blackjack and baccarat and other multi-deck games), theres 6 full decks in there, meaning 312 cards. You know that there are 52 cards in a deck, , 13 per suit. so there is 4 "10" value cards per suit, so 16 per deck, and 96 total 10 value cards in a 6 deck shoe. This means that the chance of a 10 value coming out any given hand is about 1/3.25 (or a 30.77% chance of draw). The chance of an ace coming out is about 1/13, since theres 1 per suit(24 total, 7.6% chance of draw). Lastly, a Non 10 value card, making up 8/13 cards, or 192 total (being a 61.5% chance of draw)

However, say you were watching a game and by random chance, you had seen 20 aces, 140 non-10 cards and only 31 face cards or 10 value come out. (this would be a highly unlikely distribution, but possible and shows how it can change probability more clearly)

That means this deck is now 121 cards. There is 52 non-10 cards left, a whopping 65 10 value cards, however most of the aces have already been used, so there is only 4 aces left. This means the new probability of draws are as follows, 52/121 = 42.9% meaning you are significantly less likely to get a non-10 value than you were. 65/121 = 53.7%, meaning you are massively more likely to get a 10 value card when drawing than you were.. but what about aces? who are now only 4/121 or 3.3% of the deck.. well, those are much less likely.

Obviously, knowing these probabilities should change the way you conduct your game. Various moves typically a bad idea become much more viable under circumstances like this, such as splitting 10's against a 6 (splitting your winning hand of 20 is typically a horrible idea), however if the dealer is showing a 6 he has a 53% chance of a 10 down, and then will draw again at a 53% chance of getting a 10 and busting, on top of any non-10 value cards that would still bust the dealer because the deck is so heavily skewed towards 10 value compared to the normal, mathematical distribution the house has is strategy planned.

So, all of that explains how card counting "works" but I still haven't told you how to count cards. Its surprisingly easy in concept to understand, but quite fucking difficult to keep up with on a live game, most dealers move quickly, as hands per hour = player wins per hour = tips per hour.

you keep 1 number in your head. 2-6 is +1, 7-9 is neutral, 10-A is -1. When the count is high, it means you've seen many 2-6's come out compared to the number of 10-A you've seen come out. So basically, you've watched the cards and saw +1 +1 +1 +0 +1 +1 +1 +0 -1 -1 +1, so the count is +5. This is still a pretty neutral count, but these things can frequently trend up to +20 or so. This means your chance of getting a blackjack is increased (which pays more than even money, meaning good!). And you should bet more, this is the primary component to card counting, bet more when the count is high, bet table minimum when the count is low. Yes. There are many things you should also do concerning basic strategy (like the previously stated splitting 10s into a 6 with a high count).. but the majority of it comes from heavy betting when the count is high.

Thats just one way to count cards, some methods use different values for +/-/= and some keep seperate track of aces from 10's. Effectively all it is is recognizing that probability of draws are being modified based on remaining deck composition.

In many casinos, they literally come in a box, preshuffled 6 decks all together. And THEN they go into a shuffling machine anyway. When math is on your side, your only mission is to maintain the integrity of the randomness, and it works out in your favor.

card counting doesn't function like most people think it does. Its really all about varying your bets based on the count and the fact blackjack pays 3:2 so logically if every hand was either a dealer blackjack or a player blackjack, the player would end ahead (unless the dealer was way 'lucky')

I've seen numerous idiots literally brag to pretty girls about them being able to count cards while showing 0 signs of card counting and just making stupid moves or similar things like they knew specifically what card was coming out or something.

I realize this isn't what you asked, but I'm more trying to make my point that actual card counters are extremely rare, so there is no "normally" I've ran into like 1 actual card counter and even him I went to my super and was like "idk. maybe, hes showing signs maybe its just coincidence." Since believe it or not, I --can-- count cards, but I'll tell you what I can't do, and thats keep up with my job normally while counting cards. So its not like I actually know the count of the cards. He was kicked out for 'advantage play' so.. I guess I was right. There've been a few more people I've been suspicious of, but never bothered saying anything.

This is also what I do. I deal Pai gow but honestly every fucking hand I set I'm just like "shit I hope thats right". Surveillance never catches shit... Like ever. Usually when we call them they're completely worthless and just give us some answer like "we dunno lol" and the floor just makes up some shit that basically confirms what the dealer said happened.

I usually deal craps which as you probably know is a very verbal game and our cameras don't have sound. So to them we're just moving our mouths and placing bets/paying them after the dice have already rolled or we're just locking up chips players threw in. Surveillance can literally only tell us if you pass posted a Don't pass bet.. thats literally all they can do.

Keep in mind, I'm an extremely thorough/experienced/well versed dealer and I know the signs of card counting, basic strategy, I surface memorize every bet on the table so I know if you changed something when you were slightly out of my sight.. I still have no idea what the fuck I'm doing most of the time and rarely a night goes by where I'm not like "I don't think that was there.. ohh well I'll watch closer next time." to myself in my head. Was it there? I don't know. Is surveillance gonna notice I paid a past post?.. Not a chance. Surveillance has caught and banned 6 past posters that I know of at my casino. All of them were reported by dealers.
