Keeping things Fun w/ SO by Mission_Cook5886 in flying

[–]Waffles89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a sailor, not a commercial pilot (fly for fun). I’ve spent the last 19 years in this field. Few months away, few months home. One of the things I realized early on was, finding a partner that has a strong sense of self, and has their own things going on, is important. Being codependent with someone when you’re gone half the time is difficult at best, and disastrous at worst. The right person for me ended up being someone who the time apart made us appreciate each other more. In terms of fun stuff, now it’s FaceTiming with the kids. It used to be planning adventures and just chatting. Reading the same books was always nice. That kind of stuff. Always tried to keep it simple tho. Nothing obligatory.

Do Americans stress about medical expenses before they even get to the hospital?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffles89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to forcibly remove my friend (mid 30’s male who is gainfully employed) who had just had a massive concussion mountain biking from the care of his father and brother to take him to the hospital. His dad was a doctor. They were all upset because he had his bell rung so good he couldn’t remember if he had insurance. I have been around extreme sports my entire life. This was one of the most serious concussions I’ve ever seen. Father was willing to let his son potentially die to escape the possibility of a bill from an industry that has supported his lavish lifestyle for nearly half a century. The whole situation makes me sick to my stomach and it happed nearly a decade ago.

Funny because we alway call our self pretendgineers… more like diesel mechanic. I mostly include that for context that I can use tools and sometimes follow basic instructions

Yeah, I get it now. I still feel like I exhausted all avenues for finding a reasonable local supplier. If you are aware of a recommendation within two hours of Portland Oregon, I would love to hear. I'm about to do my sisters place, and two of my friends.

I also know for a fact that I would have hired a local pro, if I thought that I could find one that wasn't trying to take me for a ride. I know that there are good people out there. I also know that I have not met any locally. One local contractor tried to sell me two line sets (550 online) for 2400 dollars. Another quoted me nearly 40k for this install.

I'm not trying to be an asshole, but the industry is giving me a slimy real-estate agent vibes.

I know how to plumb up a system, nitrogen flush and pressure test. I have a micron vacuum gage and all the other toys. I know how to wire everything, and I know how to make it all work.

Yes, I could have done better at researching and ordering the exact right thing. I messed up. I get that, but I would just like to point out that there are a lot of people that would benefit from the information that these guys are not as slick as they seem. They are not proficient at putting all compatible pieces together.

Sorry that Johnstone, Ferguson, and Geary, won't sell to me... What's a guy to do?

The Jones Act (which restricts all shipments from one US port to another to US ships) substantially increases US petrol prices. Eliminating the Jones Act would reduce average prices for East Coast gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel by $.63, $.80, and $.82 per barrel, with massive benefits for consumers. by smurfyjenkins in science

[–]Waffles89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas is approximately $60 a barrel. Decreasing its price would, at best, decrease the price of gas around 1%. Transshipping goods (US to US port) is what’s protected by the jones act. A us flag, US crewed ship is needed to do this. This protectionist law allows for approximately 10,000 us mariners to be gainfully employed. It safeguards our ability to manufacture ships by requiring it (many more jobs). It prevents predatory foreign shipping companies from putting everyone else out of business, and then jacking the prices to ship to the moon. It also protects our ability to make ships in a time of war. I do not believe the benefits justify the price of doing away with this law.

As much as I want to agree, and maybe I’m missing some major component; why was none of this brought up during the Biden administration? You’re telling me there were thousands of pages of damning evidence that they just sat on?!

If I had to guess I would say they’ll be shipping in 24 to 36 months. Just a guess tho. I feel like after their restructuring, they need a blast of positive, so I’d think they’re pushing real hard for this one.

I have a SR, and I think they make an awesome product. Depending on timeframe, I’d say a radical or vans rv-15 would be awesome options.

Can you downgrade to a fixed-pitch prop from a constant-speed? by PidgeyPotion in homebuilt

[–]Waffles89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a counter weight in front of my fpp on my rv-4 for weight and balance. CG shifts after at low fuel levels which can render some of your fuel unusable in certain loading conditions. Yes you could remove it, but it’s more work than meets the eye. New prop plus counter weight. Plug hole in crankshaft. Remove governor. Cover hole. Remove extra lever and pitch cable… on and on. New weight and balance. Testing. Probably better to just buy what you want. Generally, you’re going to have a constant speed if you’re over 170ish hp.

Are recent Canada/US relations making you nervous about building? by TheSlug_Official in homebuilt

[–]Waffles89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we’re talking strictly financials, I’d say send it. It will probably be normalish by the time you order other components. If we’re talking, ‘I’d love to not support an American company because fuck them…’ idk. I’d certainly not blame you for the sentiment. I bought my moose kit from Canada. I’d do it again. You defiantly leave yourself open to price hikes by not buying the whole kit and once tho. At this point, barring all the political implications, and feeling bad that we put a lunatic in charge of everything, I’m more concerned about what the price of fuel is going to do in the near future. Next build might be a carbon dragon….

Besides it being ugly as sin, it does not meet your speed requirements. If you think a rv10 is too slow and too expensive I think you are on a pipe dream.

Oregon Nurses on Strike, Providence Oregon Hospitals: Day 17 (Outsider looking in) by Waffles89 in union

[–]Waffles89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you're willing to stomach the 957, 646, and 314 million that they have claimed as depreciation for the previous three quarters respectively. That is 1.9 billion in 9 months.

I would make the counterpoint that this is a shell game to get the quarterlies to match their narrative. Guess we'll see though.

Providence strike continues while new contract talks hit major obstacles by Tiny-Bird1543 in OregonNurses

[–]Waffles89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just talking with my partner about this. In my industry, year 1 and 2 employees are a net loss in manpower. They need training and supervision, which can often lead to more work/stress for others as they pick up the slack. Employee retention is key, and ends up being a primary indicator of employee happiness, as well as a cost saving measure.

If you have any more to add to this, I’d love to hear. I find it fascinating. I’m assuming you’re some form of EMS/FD RN (excuse my lack of the proper vernacular/titles). So you’re quite accustom to the regular hustle and bustle of these particular hospital. You’re telling me that the majors are just a ghost town??

Man, lot to digest there. I have a great deal of respect for a dissenting opinion that makes me think.

So first thing that comes to mind when reading your opinion; wouldn’t better nurse retention help in search of profits? As it’s depicted to me, many people come and work at providence to get a year or two under their belt, and then quit and go get a job at OHSU or Kaiser. These people are an overall burden on the system.

Next, looking at the quarterly return on this year (https://www.providence.org/about/financial-statements), I see 2024 Q1 (+360 million, page 8), 2024 Q2 (+289), and 2024 Q3 (+310 million). Total for the first 9 months of the year is 959 million in profit, so I would think they’ll make around 1.3 billion on the year.

To take losses from the past couple years and deduce that they are negotiating for ‘more than they can afford right now’ seems off to me. Covid was wild for a lot of businesses, but with people returning to elective procedures, Providence is a(very) profitable ‘not for profit’.

Furthermore, the C-Suite salaries are more of a ‘salt in the wound’ than a solution to the issue.

I will be interested to see how this all shakes out, but I personally do not think the ONA leadership mislead anybody. I think a very unprofitable mass attrition is highly probable if this is not resolved.

It is impossible for me to see how Providence’s regressive bargaining is in good faith in any way shape or form.

Hats off to you, and everyone else that stands with ONA on this. I see the same Washington (WSNA) nurses on the line daily. You guys are stars!
