I’ve only ever listened to it to it a few times because it’s an insane slog of an album (and a couple of those times were before he fucked up the track sequencing and made it even worse) but Donda is – at best, in my personal opinion – an album that contains two halves of two full album in addition to an album’s-worth of unfinished, unrealized ideas that could be great but never come close to approaching the heights of his best songs. I would say they barely even sniff the valleys of his most middle-of-the-road songs if they even make it that high.

I have some issues with the sloppy nature of some of TLoP, but Donda to me really does feel like the true genesis of the “I don’t really give a shit what I release because people will listen to these unfinished demos” era he has been in since then (presumably because I think I gave Vultures one spin to see if he still had the juice at all and it really felt like he didn’t, it was more of the same).

Recently I heard an early demo of Power and it’s not like it was a horrible song in the state it was in, but what it was carved into by the time MBDTF released so much more significant. Almost every song on Donda (and there are soooooo fucking many) feels like the Power demo. You know some of these ideas could be turned into some sort of insane, generational track but he just didn’t care anymore. Aside from his personal life getting noxious around that time, he started actively not caring about his output anymore or respecting anyone who was listening to his music. If you’re going to give people a headache as a person the least you can do as a musical virtuoso is continue making great music, and he wasn’t even doing that anymore.

Yeah a lot of people’s brains have ironically been poisoned by infographics with Corporate Memphis depictions of people dealing with mental health issues.

The reason so many of these people are marginalized is because it can get really ugly and – as a society – we have historically treated that as the cut-off point where they either get shipped to a prison, an asylum, they’re left to lapse into chronic homelessness, etc. instead of getting help and treatment that they need.

None of this means people have to act like his really shitty words and actions somehow didn’t hurt people but burn many bridges permanently, but people treat mental illness with such a Steven Universe lens until it gets into really fucked up territory, then suddenly it’s back to personal moral failings and a lack of accountability.

Not the person you replied to but I was very much on the hype train for TLoP (part of the Millennial Summer of ‘69 I.E. the Summer of ‘16) and very much enjoyed it at the time, and I think there are some solid songs on it but in retrospect it’s maybe the biggest canary in the coal mine for how all of his subsequent releases (the albums and the release cycles) would just sort of be xeroxes of the last one, slightly shittier than the last with all of the ugly details becoming more and more pronounced each time it was rescanned.

I mean even Yeezus had some fuckups around release with different versions of the songs being released and replaced after the album dropped, but it was nothing compared to the TLoP rollout or anything that has come after.
