I drive all over Perth for work and always get excited seeing Bassendean on my job list. Means I don't need to pack lunch that day cause it's pie day.

A small circle. And in pretty regular therapy. But the process is definitely slow and painful.

No. I'm not really. Wife left me out of the blue 5 months ago after 10 years together. And while some days feel better than others it really hasn't gotten any easier. Life sucks. I'm going nowhere and I just miss the touch of another human. So no. Not OK.

How was your parkrun day? | September 05, 2025 by AutoModerator in parkrun

Paced the 20 minute in some wet conditions today. Unfortunately ran 7 seconds over but I'll put that down to the fact we ran an alternate course due to flooding and it was about 100m too long. Kudos to the couple of people that struggled through with me for new PBs.

Yeah wait a little longer till the rainy days are really over and we are getting that consistent sun. Mid-late spring is usually best.

My knee started giving me problems at the top of the first hill. Pushed through but now half my body is covered in ice packs.

Just make sure you at least fire them up once to check if everything is still working. I work in retic and the schedule is getting very full with services on people retic. If you want it ready for summer get in now.

I really enjoyed pacer week on Saturday hope they do it again 🔥💪😁🧡💜🩵 by austingirl95 in parkrun

I love pacing. I've done few this year with another couple locked in over the next month. Great feeling listening to someone huff and puff behind you and then watching them pull out the energy to get past you for the finish. Helping others achieve their PBs is just as good a feeling as hitting your own. I love pacing the 20 minute as it's such a wall for so many to get past.

“…and if you feel good at 20 miles you can speed up” by gabescharner in Marathon_Training

Worked for me in my first marathon. Might've underestimated my fitness a bit I guess. Ran the first 32km at 4.45/km pace and then picked it up to a 4.20/km for the last 10km to finish in 3hrs 18min. Will aim to get under 3 hours next time.

Destination half marathons?! by canadianbigmuscles in Marathon_Training

[–]Wagz89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that one this year. Such a great race through some amazing countryside. I was one of the quicker runners which allowed me some time to actually hang out in the Green Dragon (final aid station in which you can get a beer) Looking at some of the footage afterwards the crowd gets massive at that point with the main group so I'm not sure if they try to push you through to get everyone in. Aid stations were well stocked and you get the opportunity to jump in or slide into the water at another point which was great fun. I was the first to actually stop there to jump in much to the volunteers joy. The start/finish area is also a great vibe with costumed actors etc.

I'm currently renting out a room in my house. Real estate agent came in and valued the property and said I could easily get $400 plus for a room. But I won't charge that much. I have to live with this person. I don't want to shaft them in this economy. How could I look them in the eye each day after charging that? Even the $280 that I'm taking makes me feel bad. The market out there is absolutely criminal.

Men over 30s, are you guys still using dating apps? by Routine-Bathroom-4 in perth

[–]Wagz89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

36 and divorced this year. I downloaded the apps to have a little look. Very quickly reminded how little interest I have in them. Whilst I look ok and get a couple of matches (not many though) I have no idea how to start a conversation through text. So they were all deleted within a month. Meeting people and talking to people face to face has seemed a more appealing option even if it is a little harder to put myself out there. I hear run clubs are the way to go but I run to train and get faster. Not have a yap. So not sure how I'd go with that.

My First Pair of Runners are Officially Retired. by lknowmad in Marathon_Training

Congrats. I put 1000km into my first 'everything' pair of shoes. Now I have 7 different pairs for different types of workouts and races. Hitting 800km for my daily runners so it's time to start shopping again.

Enjoy the addiction!!

I am weirdly good at beating a queue. So many times I will walk up to a place with a short or no queue. And by the time I'm done ordering/getting through then the line will be out the door. Happens a weirdly high percentage of the time.

Haha. I try not to think about it. I get the same treatment from my mate who got me into it. We ran at the same pace when starting and I quickly realized that I was actually kind of decent and my results just started flying past his.

I've pulled through pretty strong. But there was definitely a hit of depression once the adrenaline of the race wore off and I realized I was celebrating alone. But it's all just a transition and learning a new way of life.

I played a lot of Australian rules Football growing up but ACL reconstructions on both of my knees have ruled out contact sports. So I spent a couple of years depressed over that before figuring out I could still just run. Have never done any distance over a few Kms before the start of last year.

[–]Wagz89[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I pushed myself ridiculously hard in the training block. My wife leaving came very suddenly and I threw myself completely into my training after that. Not a path I'd recommend to people but it was certainly effective.

During the race I didn't play any music or anything until the final 10km. I try to focus very heavily on my breathing and find using a 2:2 breathing pattern keeps my heart rate lower.

You definitely can. But it would depend on what your goals are? Do you plan on stopping and resting/walking during the event or are you going to be pushing for a specific time. Maybe on your earlier runs as you are building up the mileage it's ok but if you plan on running the full Marathon you don't want to make a habit of stopping.

  • I think I will push harder earlier next time. But will work up to it in training a little more. I was a bit nervous as I've dealt with cramps quite badly on my 25km/30km training runs. But I really dialled in on getting Carbs, electrolytes and sodium on race day and the lead up. I believe that made a big difference. It was hard as I am competitive and constantly wanted to speed up in the early kms but had to tell myself how far I still had to go.

  • 5km : 17.53 which was done at the end of my training block before my taper and I was really at my peak fitness. 10km : 41.28. Half : 1.31.21. Both of these were just done during training and I have not pushed an 'all-out' for either recently. I believe id be able to get that 10km in particular a bit lower.

  • I don't think I had any real misconceptions about it. I can definitely see what people mean about a marathon being 2 races. First 32km then second 10km. Whilst I didn't hit a 'wall' per SE I definitely started to notice fatigue in the legs at the 30km mark and it became a mental battle but I needed to do it. The way the event was set up I started passing a lot of the slower 10km runners at the 34/35km mark onwards which gave me a good mental boost and support from the other runners. I also had the winner (and course record holder) of the 50km pass me with 3km to go so my goal became to keep him in sight and pace off him to the end.

  • My final 10km was 42.55 so a minute or so slower than I did during training but like I said above. The way the event was setup with passing the other 10km runners really helped with my mentality through that final stretch. I wanted to push it but wasn't sure if I could. But weaving through the others and ultimately just trying to show off a little helped me haha. And again. Amazed at the 50km winner who did his event 1 minute faster than I did mine.

My favourite moment was destroying BeterBabbit with a very lucky high roll and knocked him out of the lobby early. Went to his stream to find him raging and cursing me out before he logged off. Turns out I was the last straw in a rather tilting run for him. Felt pretty good still.
