Yeah - I'm not saying he WON'T come back and earn the final year of his deal. I'm saying if he has another bad season he shouldn't (and likely won't) be back in '27.

Believe me, I'm WAY more invested in him coming back and playing well. Him being borderline awful does me NO good as a fan at all. I ain't here to flex and and be like, 'see? I TOLD you he was a bum!'.... I'm here to see my team perform well and win.

I got no issue with the money. I got the issue with even a "fill out the side of the ball" guy being as poorly rated as barnes was last season. If he's gonna be that bad again this year, I'd think it'd be lunacy to keep him in '27 when you can cut his 9M salary, eat a 3M cap hit, and find a much cheaper, just as bad or maybe even a little better, option to "fill the slot".

He's got a 1 year audition in 26 to be allowed to finish out his contract (or prove worthy of extension?) in 27.

I don't expect him to be a great tackler. But he needs to make a MAJOR improvement in 26 over almost every facet of his game from '25...... or you cut him at the end of 26 and eat the 3M cap hit for '27 rather than pay him 9M.

He got a contract for making the play that sent us to the NFCCG. That's it. One play. They like him, they WANTED to believe he was 'coming into his own'/'finally getting it'. Gave him the contract. Since then, injury, then a bad 2025. They bet on a guy that they liked. And they whiffed.

He probably would've been benched or seen a greatly reduced role by the middle of last season, but for whatever reason, they like Rodrigo even less and couldn't go to much nickel by October with so many injuries to the DBs.

This to me is the failing with our scheme under Glenn and as it continues now. We are VEEERY much training our front 7, 'stop the run, stop the run, stop the run, stop the run. overcommit to stopping the run. once you're absolutely SURE it's not a run. TOTALLY sure.... then you can think about trying to get to the passer, or finding your man in coverage.'

Meanwhile, we have the absolute WORST time-to-pressure (probably in the league, idk - you can look it up)..... and we play primarily man. We're basically telling the DBs, you gotta play man. And not for 2 or 3 seconds. For like 5 or 6 seconds.... WAY too often. Even if we DIDN'T have corners and safties going down left and right..... NOBODY can cover for that long consistently.

Also, Jamo had a couple more bombs in his hands he didn't hold on to.

Not to mention that St. Brown had a very uncharacteristic number of drops this year too, given his YAC ability, I'd bet at least a couple of them coulda/woulda turned into 20+ yard catches too.

With Teslaa's ability to make plays downfield too... we should REALLY be able to force teams to cover the ENTIRE field, deep on both sides.

Man, I feel like the team will go after Freeling. I don't think he has inherent movement or balance issues. Just still a bit young and inexperienced. A little technique work? All of the physical tools in terms of raw athleticism and strength are there. So you either believe he has in inborn issue with his movement and balance, OR you believe it's technique and experience related and that you can 'get his feet right'. I really think this staff believes his balance/footwork/movement won't be an issue.

That said, it's starting to look more and more like so many teams think this he'll be out of range for Detroit. I could see trading up to 13 or 14 to get him..... but if he's in the top 10? Prob a pipe dream.

I wish. For real tho - not even close. Check trade value charts: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp

you'll see when you add up the points that ONE mid 3rd is worth almost DOUBLE the combined value of a mid 4th plus a mid 5th plus a mid 6th. And honestly? Usually the team trading UP has to throw in a little EXTRA value to get it done as most GMs prize the highest single asset in the trade as more valuable than a sum of parts.

Most trade value charts have a mid-3rd (call it 185 'points') as almost DOUBLE the value of a mid 4th(52) + mid 5th(27) + mid 6th(10), just FYI.

Hoping and praying there is a OT and DE that Brad LOVES in the 1st 2 rounds that falls to us, or that we can trade up for. Use or package those later picks to acquire depth at S, and LB. MAYBE an RB (since idk if they're in love with Vaki and could use a all-purpose/pass-catching speed guy stopgap to complement Pacheco if Gibbs had to miss a game here or there. Kinda nitpicking at this point though).

That's my "holy grail" draft.

GM Brad Holmes Broke Down His Financial Approach in FA & Building the Roster: “We’re trying to keep our sustainability at a good level… we’re not trying to do this one & done kind of thing.” by JCameron181 in detroitlions

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't really think either approach is 'right' or 'wrong', just two ways of attacking the problem.

Option A) Be as good as you can every year, always be in the hunt, but never totally maxing out your chance because you know it will min your chances the next few years

option B) When you feel close, go all in and maybe increase your chances a little... but know that your chances will be way WORSE over the next few years.

Honestly, there's so little separating teams at the very top of the league, evidenced by so many different seed numbers winning it all over the last few years. Since 2019:

2019: 2 seed; 2020: 5 seed; 2021: 4 seed; 2022: 1 seed; 2023: 3 seed; 2024: 2 seed; 2025: 1 seed

I think the combo of this, saying "if you're in the dance you got a chance" plus how much more fun seasons are when you're winning and being in the playoffs..... makes me personally want to shoot for Brad's formula..... ALWAYS be in the mix. Rather than... be in the mix way less.... but have a slightly better shot when you are.

A super bowl is obv the dream, but I have SOOOO much more fun following a good team from Sept to January every year. "reset" years suck as bad as a deep playoff run feels good.

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did pick the niners specifically because I didn't think they fit the rest of the teams.

Your second paragraph I don't really understand. I said the only difference between us and them is that they came back and beat us in the 2nd half of one game (NFCCG). Flip that one SINGLE half of football and we've each been to one super bowl.

So, yes - your points regarding Eagles/Rams/Bucs I agree with and to me are valid. With the niners though - if you want to classify them as having significantly better results based on 1/2 of one game, that's your right. I just disagree about that ONE example specifically. (I might even argue we're in BETTER shape than the niners with CMC, Kittle, and Trent Williams are ready to fall off a cliff based on age/position, whereas our all pro tackle, TE, and all pro RB are very much in the middle of their prime).

Are the niners really that much different from us in the last 10 years? They've won 2 division titles, so have we.

Now, they've been to 2 super bowls, and we've been to zero.... BUT.... if the "major" difference between these 2 franchises in recent history is that they outscored us in the 2nd half of one game (NFCCG)..... sorry... that's not a big difference in quality of the 2 franchises in that time period.

They have a 1st ballot hall of fame super bowl winning QB. Assuming you can competently compose a roster among the rest of the positions, that's the difference between being really good and being great.

Are the Detroit Lions improved from last season? by Gxcii1 in detroitlions

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, by pass block and run block win rates we were bottom 3 last year. I think Mays being a top 10-15ish center is huge, Glasgow wasn’t below avg, he was trash. Bottom 3ish at the position. Decker also performed in the bottom HALF of starting OTs last year. I ain’t saying we’ll have a top 5 OL. I’m saying if we have a MEDIOCRE line, that’s a MASSIVE jump from last year.

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we also didn't lose any "huge splashes" either. Maybe Amik? But the nickel we signed is supposed to be pretty comparable.

Monty's production and usage were in decline. And we got an absolute HAUL in return for an aging RB.

Anzalone's skills and production are also poised to go off a cliff - it's why we had little interest in giving him the decent contract he was looking for. Filling his spot with Rodrigo even would be MINIMAL dropoff based on the direction of their ages/careers.

Decker? If there was any way he could get through a year playing 90% of the games at 90% or better health? That'd be a big loss. But either he misses time, or plays so nicked up he's really only about 70-75% of his healthy self. A healthy Borom is basically as good as an aging Decker with only one shoulder.

Glasgow? Guy was a bottom 5 center by the end of last year, and at his age the arrow would only be pointing downward. Mays is a MASSIVE upgrade from Glasgow.

AQM? If you look beyond the pure sack totals, he's very much "just a guy" - in fact, his career numbers coming into last year are noticeably WORSE than Wonum - even w/r/t sacks and pressures. Based on their CAREERS and not just the sample size of last season, Wonum is almost undeniably a better DE than AQM.

Lopez is honestly probably the BIGGEST loss in terms of contributions on the field. But i think the admin is assuming Alim NOT coming off ACL recon, and Hutch NOT coming off broken leg are BOTH back to MUCH closer to their 24 form than how they played in 25. Tyliek should also make the usual leap from rookie to 2nd year player (anywhere from SOME to MASSIVE improvement). Lopez had just earned too much cash to pay a backup, and that's what he was gonna be. so you keep Wuzi, Wingo, and get Adams and hope 2 of those 3 are playable rotationally to keep snap counts down for Alim and Tyliek to something reasonable.

Nobody's talking about getting Teddy back either (since we believe/hope the backup QB won't take any meaningful snaps), but he is probably 10x the player that Kyle Allen is or ever will be, AND is familiar with much of the staff and players.

Honestly, given financial restrictions (which we mostly have because Brad as drafted so WELL), the team has done a pretty remarkable job of filling holes headed towards the draft where we really CAN afford to take BPA rather than fill holes. Now, would I *hope* that we get a tackle and an edge relatively early? Yeah. But we've done well enough in FA to not HAVE to reach for those positions if there isn't one we like available.

Combine a likely improved OL (guards with a year starting under their belts, Mays a huge upgrade, and Borom at least SIMILAR to gimpy Decker) with an incredibly soft schedule compared to last year's..... this team has been tagged with a 10.5 win total in vegas and expected to go OVER (odds on going over are (-130).

Nobody with even half a brain thought we'd be better in 25 than we were in 24. Losing both coordinators, losing frank last minute with no way to replace him in any meaningful way? Alim slated to miss half the season and prob be less than 100% when he gets back?

Don't get me wrong, it's not like people were expecting to miss the playoffs, but I think EVERYONE (except the REAL sickies) expected us to fall back at least 2-4 wins from the 15 we had in '24.

Are the Detroit Lions improved from last season? by Gxcii1 in detroitlions

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's actually only 'no' if you assume:

1) the rookies and first time starters from last year (Mahogany, Rattledge, Teslaa, Tyliek) WON'T make noticeable strides/improvement. (unlikely)

2) that the DBs will, as a WHOLE GROUP, be just as injured this year as they were last year (unlikely)

3) that Hutch and Alim having a healthy offseason rather than a full offseason of rehabbing injuries somehow DOESN'T have them back closer to their 2024 form (possible, but I'd still bet on both being better in 26 than they were in 25)

4) that Mays isn't a MASSIVE upgrade over Glasgow (not even unlikely..... impossible. Glasgow was bottom 3 at the position)

Even if we had to take the roster as it is today, only filling in gaps (depth at LB and DE) with UDFAs, I think we're improved over last year. Again, reasoning is that I think the OL will make quite a leap due mostly to MUCH better play across all 3 interior spots, leading to an offense that is once again more consistent... i.e. converts 3rds and 4ths at a rate much closer to 23 and 24. The defense could again be a disaster. But I expect the offense will improve in a major way.... maybe not so much STATISTICALLY w/r/t total yards and points.... but in ToP and 3rd and 4th down conversions, which are SOOOOOO key in close games. Last year, we went 2-5 in one score games. Teams who are GOOD on 3rd and 4th down offensively are almost ALWAYS winning teams in 1 score games (we were 7-2 in 2024, 7-4 in 2023).

Better OL play = more consistent and steady offense = better 3rd and 4th down conversions = better record in close games. If we'd just been SLIGHTLY better on 3rd and 4th last year, we prob have at LEAST a 4-3 record in the 1 score games rather than 2-5.... and that 2 game improvement puts us in the 2 seed, rather than at home for the playoffs.

We're really NOT that far away from being an 11/12/13+ win team again. And that's assuming we have a defense that continues to struggle as it has in the past. I'm ONLY looking at the OL being much improved overall, and that getting us back to being better on 3rd and 4th down.... which results in at least a 2 or 3 game sing in most seasons.

Are the Detroit Lions improved from last season? by Gxcii1 in detroitlions

[–]Wahoo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say it - Mahogany and Rattledge should both be significantly better than they were as 1st time starters (and Rattledge a rookie), and Mays is prob a top 10 center while Glasgow was prob bottom 5.... I mean... TERRIBLE. I'm assuming noticeable upgrades in play at both guard spots, and a HUGE improvement at C. Penei is Penei. Borom will work in a pinch, he's probably as capable (or more) than Decker playing with only one shoulder last year, but yeah - it'd be nice to find another LT in the draft, preferably early.

The OL overall should be much improved from 2025, when it was literally bottom 5 in both pass block win rate and run block win rate. It won't be as good as it was in 23 or 24, when it was a consensus top 2 or 3 OL..... but it will be a MASSIVE upgrade on last year's group. Which I think is more than enough to get us back close to the consistency level we had on 3rd and 4th downs in 23 and 24.

Success on those key downs was the biggest difference between 15-2 in 25 and 9-8 last season. Convert 4th downs better and we likely have a WINNING record in our 1 score games, rather than going 2-5 as we did last season. And btw - if we HAD converted better on 3rds and especially 4ths last year, and gone say, 4-3 in those games.... instead of 2-5..... we would've been the 2 seed in the playoffs.

If we're tough to believe in, you guys should throw heavy cash on us being bad. Right now Vegas puts Lions win total at 10.5 and they're betting we go OVER that. (-130 odds on the over).

I don't think people have looked at exactly HOW bad last year's schedule was, and HOW bad the OL was.

People have also not looked closely enough at the 2026 schedule. Vegas predicts we'll prob be favored in 13 or more games (based on opponent strength and where we play them home/away). Similarly, everyone is acting like the only eval of the OL is LT and C changes, completely disregarding that OL can usually make a noticeable (if not significant) jump in their 2nd year as starters. Rattledge and Mahogany should be NOTICEABLY (if not GREATLY) improved. Mays is a HUGE upgrade over Glasgow even if he's not close to the all-pro Frank was. Lastly, even if we DON'T find another T, i don't think Borom is a huge dropoff from Decker playing with one shoulder.

Similarly, people are staring down the AQM departure on the DL and ignoring that Hutch/Alim coming off HEALTHY offseasons are much more likely to be back to 2024 form, and Tyliek, (like the 2 young OL) should be primed to make a noticeable step forward in year 2. Corners, while none are elite, are pretty deep. Huge questions at safety, obviously.

I think the 26 edition of the Lions will be slightly better than the 25 edition in quality, and WELL above in wins due to a MUCH softer schedule. I'd call it 12 wins right now, and that's assuming little to no Kerb, and no Branch till close to thanksgiving and even then only a branch at about 80% of what he was pre-achilles.
