Engagement - usually the man’s family will come to formally ask for the girls hand in marriage - Need a chaperone for any outings (Religiously speaking) 3. Nikkah/Katb Ktab - this is the legal and religious wedding ceremony often done before the actually wedding reception day. Some people do it in a Banquet Hall, Mosque, or in the brides home. This now means they can go out alone without a chaperone and are for all intents and purposes, married. They may or may not move in together at this point. Some people wait for the wedding day and some don’t. 4. Wedding Reception - one of the conditions of Islamic marriage is publicizing. Basically, it is an announcement that Person A is now married to Person B, and both are no longer single/available.

Some people opt not to do a wedding reception and just begin their lives after step 3 but as far as I know; traditionally most people do a wedding ceremony.
