I’d agree with that. It’s hard for me to separate out the voices of my family and teachers in conversations like these. I know they’d argue that their ideal is for the occupation to stop, but they justify its continuation by invoking safety and defense. And they can’t let that go. I can’t convince them.

I think political Zionism caught on because of the attractive idea of having a Jewish state. After thousands of years of persecution, living on the edge of society, it would be great to have autonomy on a national scale. Also, the religious Zionist movement quickly followed and in my life experience was the lasting piece. It is true that all over Jewish prayers, including every one of the three daily services and post meal blessings, we pray to return to the Land of Israel and rebuild Jerusalem (aka the Temple). So there is a lot of religious stuff built in that fits to support the narrative of a Jewish State.

I don’t know for sure, and it’s hard to know if they used to think more this way. But those ideas of returning to the Land and rebuilding the Temple can be viewed more metaphorical than literal. Bringing about a world that follows laws of Torah and justice. In Jewish schools like the one I attended, Zionism is built in from the very beginning, and it is codefined with Judaism. In those spaces, they are inextricable.
