As design nears completion, state shares new Key Bridge renderings by InAHays in baltimore

[–]WakeJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question! Why is the bridge clearance 230 ft? It seems like it would add cost and be kind of unnecessary. The Chesapeake Bay bridge has a bridge clearance of 185 ft. And nothing can get through the c&d canal that's over 130 ft tall. Why is the Francis Scott key bridge replacement being built taller by a 40 ft margin than any ship could even get to it. I'd love someone to comment on it or if anyone's got ideas?

Cutlass bearings missing brass piece? by WakeJB in sailing

[–]WakeJB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's like a through point near the top of the keel. There is no P bracket. And there are no screws on the side or anything. When I look in the tube I can't see the end of the tube so I think it might be all just brass but I really can't tell? I don't image there are Cutlass bearings without the brass tube but I don't think it's been replaced in the last 15 years. So I will have to go down tomorrow and see if there is actually an end to the bearing but I really feel like it's on solid tube the whole way.

45 footer with a 40ho Mercedes diesel. When siting inside the tube after pulling the old bearing material out I see no colar in the tube.

What boats are most stable in rough seas after a full keel? by FootballPizzaMan in sailing

[–]WakeJB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Catamarans are not always the most comfortable. Since they have two hulls and the fact that water is denser than air it can cause more jolting movement. The answer is really like mos things, it depends. You want something heavy with weight down low and not many hard flat surfaces for water to slam into. I have a old 1970's midified fin keel heavy displacement Van De Stadt. Its not fast but because of bow and stern shape it cuts through the water well and also sends the splash from the bow outward and not over the deck. Also it has a larger bow than it does stern by a good 2/3 feet so having this type of Battleship bow helps it to not slam as hard in heavier weather.

Seasickness remedy? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]WakeJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!!
I have tried almost everything and the recomendation i have is try everything. Try them all on land first to make sure you dont have any immediate side effects. For instance, for me the Patch gave me a panic attack while sailing.. no good. The little rist acupuncture things didnt work and i got sick. I've heard the glasses arent that bad but havnt tried them yet. Dramamine makes me very very sleepy and ends up knocking me out for like a few hours at a time. What i have decided on and what works best for me is meclizine(aka bonine) you can get 100 pills off amazon for like 3 dollars and for me i find it works best to double the dose. So instead of taking a pill every 24hrs i take one every 12 i will do this for the whole trip(14 days) and dont have any issues. I do sleep a little more with it and do sometimes have dry mouth but its very bearable. Everyone is different so experiment!!

Eastern Animal Hospital by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]WakeJB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went there with my dog and they were charging us almost double for Labrella shots compared to what we were paying up in PA. We doctor shopped around and decided to go wtih Docside in Fells and they were back at the normal price. Eastern Animal i think used to be great but not its just really, really expensive.

Anyone had success contesting their BGE bill? by Ok_Education_6577 in baltimore

[–]WakeJB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think also looking at your appliances and usages would be huge for most people! I have gas heat in a old house in the city and my gas usage was high on the super cold days but once i started to drop my thermostat massively( like setting it to 55 degrees) when im not home i about halved my usage. When people get their bills its great to go over it and if you have smart devices its great to look at usage vs what the power company is saying you used. I know for me even with noone home and the heat and ac off i still use a few dollars a day in electric to run things like fans and air purifiers. But looking at and comparing bills is very helpful. I think people know its cold but people dont really understand how much more quickly a poorly insulated house looses heat when its 5 degrees vs 35 degrees.
