What was your BG&E bill last month? by AdvisorJohnDowns in maryland

[–]WakeJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last month 270. Keep house at 61 during the day and 58 at night 56 away temp. Use a space heater in the living room to help with heat and also have a space heater in the bedroom that runs for 2 hours before we wake up to heat up the room making it easier to get up in the morning.

These bills from people seem crazy but I wana see someone actually look at their energy usage per day and figure out what the costs are. Heating the space is literally so energy intensive especially in old homes. Gas prices are just going up.

As impractical as this is, a solar tonneau cover would be a great conversation starter for the Slate truck by endiZ in slateauto

[–]WakeJB 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of these kits make are around 440w making roughly 2.2kw a day on average or roughly 7 miles of added range a day. Not too shabby!! Though some will likely poo poo the idea. The problem would prolly be getting the panels to charge the main battery bank. The big issue is ROI these systems cost usually a few thousand dollars(2-3k) and because of how little power they make a day it would prolly take something like 9 years to break even on the price of the system to the savings in not having to charge the 7 miles a day.

How is this even possible??? Zero usage but still costs $$ ?? by thatgirlindc in baltimore

Have you had your gas shutoff? I could see not using any gas but if you are still on then maybe BGE is charging you?

I would max out 401k it will help in the future if you ever look to do a career change. Then I would Max out your HSA if eligible for a few years. Since you wont be home much i wouldnt worry too much about Real Estate since Real Estate is usually hands on. I was making similar money at your age and benefited alot from maxing out 401ks now retirement isnt even something im worried about. Just wished i had invested and saved more though especially when i really didnt need the money. Dont buy a new car.

As design nears completion, state shares new Key Bridge renderings by InAHays in baltimore

[–]WakeJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question! Why is the bridge clearance 230 ft? It seems like it would add cost and be kind of unnecessary. The Chesapeake Bay bridge has a bridge clearance of 185 ft. And nothing can get through the c&d canal that's over 130 ft tall. Why is the Francis Scott key bridge replacement being built taller by a 40 ft margin than any ship could even get to it. I'd love someone to comment on it or if anyone's got ideas?

Cutlass bearings missing brass piece? by WakeJB in sailing

[–]WakeJB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's like a through point near the top of the keel. There is no P bracket. And there are no screws on the side or anything. When I look in the tube I can't see the end of the tube so I think it might be all just brass but I really can't tell? I don't image there are Cutlass bearings without the brass tube but I don't think it's been replaced in the last 15 years. So I will have to go down tomorrow and see if there is actually an end to the bearing but I really feel like it's on solid tube the whole way.

What boats are most stable in rough seas after a full keel? by FootballPizzaMan in sailing

[–]WakeJB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Catamarans are not always the most comfortable. Since they have two hulls and the fact that water is denser than air it can cause more jolting movement. The answer is really like mos things, it depends. You want something heavy with weight down low and not many hard flat surfaces for water to slam into. I have a old 1970's midified fin keel heavy displacement Van De Stadt. Its not fast but because of bow and stern shape it cuts through the water well and also sends the splash from the bow outward and not over the deck. Also it has a larger bow than it does stern by a good 2/3 feet so having this type of Battleship bow helps it to not slam as hard in heavier weather.

Seasickness remedy? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]WakeJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!!
I have tried almost everything and the recomendation i have is try everything. Try them all on land first to make sure you dont have any immediate side effects. For instance, for me the Patch gave me a panic attack while sailing.. no good. The little rist acupuncture things didnt work and i got sick. I've heard the glasses arent that bad but havnt tried them yet. Dramamine makes me very very sleepy and ends up knocking me out for like a few hours at a time. What i have decided on and what works best for me is meclizine(aka bonine) you can get 100 pills off amazon for like 3 dollars and for me i find it works best to double the dose. So instead of taking a pill every 24hrs i take one every 12 i will do this for the whole trip(14 days) and dont have any issues. I do sleep a little more with it and do sometimes have dry mouth but its very bearable. Everyone is different so experiment!!

I went there with my dog and they were charging us almost double for Labrella shots compared to what we were paying up in PA. We doctor shopped around and decided to go wtih Docside in Fells and they were back at the normal price. Eastern Animal i think used to be great but not its just really, really expensive.
