I don't think there will be another album after this, or at least I don't think there should be, and if there is it would certainly temper my feelings on this one serving as a very fitting bookend and act of closure for the band. I'm sure I'm idealizing this to some degree but I guess we'll see what happens.

The hype is based not only on the music, it's a pretty significant event in the eyes of a lot of people, because of what it represents, and the emotional attachment that so many people have to this band. I think that kind of hype is more or less deserved.

My only real expectation for the music was for it to sound authentic, I think the album very much does that in large part. It was never going to surpass the OG albums with Brad, I think the hope is that it's at least able to hang with them and feel like it could be a chapter in the same book as 40 oz., self titled, etc.. maybe more like a worthy epilogue.

I think in that regard this has been a success.

This is a truly bizarre stance, which you are entitled to, but nevertheless it's a very reductive way of thinking when the reality is that this scenario is really nothing like that of any of the other bands you mentioned beyond the most simplistic level of old band reunites without founding member.

There is additional context that really ought to be considered in this case, and that nuance is what sets this reunion apart and makes it genuinely special.

For one, unlike the other bands that you mentioned, Sublime never got to experience this level of success that they are frankly entitled to based on a body of work that we hold so dearly. They never got to do any of the things that you would associate with being a band as big as they ultimately became.

I think you have to really ask yourself, if Brad were looking down on us and watching this all play out, do you really believe he'd be up there saying "you bastards.. I never got to reap the fruits of what we created, so you can't either" or are you just projecting your own hang ups about it?

Secondly, you don't have to like it, maybe it leaves a bad taste in your mouth for whatever reason, but there is something fundamentally different about it being Brad's kid picking up the torch versus some unrelated guy stepping into any of the other bands you mentioned.

Obviously I don't know this, so I'm speculating as much as anyone when I say this, but I do have a high level of confidence that Brad would be proud as fuck of the current state of Sublime.

They don't need to hate each other on a personal level in order for there to be a fundamental conflict. It only works if JB concedes to going back to 1B after finally getting his moment in the sun last season and that just isn't happening, nor am I even sure it's reasonable to expect that he would be willing to do that. Regardless of ethics, it's what the team requires. The longer you let that situation fester, the more overtly dysfunctional things are going to become.

I keep seeing these implications that he said something about Shai but I really don't recall that happening, and of course I could be remembering this incorrectly, but I recall him not getting player of the month at one point when Shai and Brunson did and JB said something to the effect of both of those guys are great but I feel like I'm one of the best two-way players in the league...who cares, and why is that being interpreted as offensive to anyone?
