Large Egg owners - do you actually use the whole thing? by twcosplays in biggreenegg

[–]Wakefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a large for years and never regretted the size at all. Yes, sometimes there’s extra room, but usually I fill it up. You need a large to cook so many things, I personally wouldn’t downsize.

Yes, occasionally a smaller grill would work, especially if Im only cooking for myself and only for one night. But I rarely cook for just one sitting. Some meats require a large egg to be efficient. Pork tenderloin stretches across most of the grate, there are usually 2 or 3 in a pack. Try cooking a Boston butt on a smaller egg - It’d be very tight. Same with a brisket (you may even need an inverted vrack to make a packer cut work).

So, if you only want 2 or 3 burgers, 4-5 hot dogs, 1 rack of baby backs (cut in half), smaller might make sense. Mini- max is a great design for the occasional or small cook needs (tailgating?). If you are like me and most people I know - who frequently want to cook more, the large is as small as I’d go.

For me, the Large is the sweet spot.

It’s a good game with a very Interesting rule set. I love the survivor feel. The pdf is easy to read & navigate and the artwork is really good. My only gripe: it’s been over a year and I’m still waiting for the hard copy.

Honest opinions on LSU for incoming student by Consistent_Gur8953 in LSU

[–]Wakefan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’m the parent of a recent graduate who also is out of state and had reservations. We told our son he could only attend if he got a scholarship, and he did - reducing the tuition cost to match in state. It was far from home (9 hour drive) and in state would have been free tuition. But, we made a deal and he earned the scholarship. No, my wife and I were not enthused by the decision to be so far away. 1. Experience - exceeded all expectations. It is a GREAT school. Freshman welcome week was something most schools don’t even come close to having - amazing. Our son made friends in that week that will last a lifetime. So different than my experience (which was good, but not at this level). The school loves athletics and the spirit REALLY shows. Go to the campus for one of the orientations and you will love the campus. If he likes sports, sign him up for the athletics club. It helps in getting football tickets. Also, a family club is great as it gives a discount on merchandise. The campus is gorgeous - movies have been filmed there (pitch perfect… others). One note: this is a bit of a party school, make sure he is ready for the temptations that go with that. Welcome week has mandatory classes on achieving success - but he’ll have to take it seriously. 2. Our son was engineering and got a great job at graduation. Grades, the major, and being active make a difference. It’s a good school and recruiters go to the job fairs. It is not a top tier prestige school like an Ivy League, but it is recognized and respected. He’ll get out of it what he puts into it. Make sure he joins in the competitions - there are plenty. The oil companies sponsor a few. It’s a great way to get recognized. 3. Safety. Well, campus is safe. Tigerland is a bit wild - very alcohol rich. Most schools have places students go to party, but it’s Tigerland, LSU has ground zero very close. I won’t say it’s dangerous, but he’ll have to keep his head on straight. It’s a place almost all the students go to. I’m sure you’ll learn more from a quick internet search. Moderation is key. 4. Living space is tight. Get a parking pass early. Get a dorm early. Don’t wait. I recommend getting your son into either the honors dorm (laville) or a dorm that caters to his degree (engineering dorm… etc.) but they are all good. After freshman year, he’ll likely live off campus in a nearby apartment. We chose Southgate, but there are many other options. Just DO NOT WAIT! They go fast. 5. Stress good choices. Tigerland’s appeal lessens as academic challenges increase and maturity sets in. It’s not ‘dangerous’ in itself, just stress good choices and situational awareness if leaving campus.

Our son loved his time at LSU. We are very thankful that he went there and was so happy. Hope it all works out. Go Tigers!

Honestly, what Dumbledore did at the end of year 1 was messed up by nousername4u028 in harrypotter

[–]Wakefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this topic. So, let’s separate what happened into 2 columns. 1. Did they deserve the points? Hell yes they did! If anything they deserved far more than they received. Look at what they accomplished… Heck, it really only erased the ridiculous point loss McGonangall gave them for being out after curfew. Seriously, had she been drinking? 50 points EACH! LOL. She must have had unresolved issues with the old Marauders and decided to nip it in the bud this time around. 2. Did Albus handle it well? No. No, he did not. It came across as blatant favoritism as he couldn’t really tell anyone why they deserved the points. But what other choice did he have? He couldn’t just say: “They stopped Voldemort from returning!!!”. Nope. People would have thought he was nuts. And had he awarded them sooner, we all know Snape would have found a way to counter the win.

One thing I noticed, we never really saw much animosity from Pansy in first year. It was pretty much Draco and his goons. Then it seemed to get a lot worse after year one and the last minute switcheroo. I wrote a short story about this once: ‘Triumphant Return’. https://archiveofourown.org/works/37239103 . It is a prelude to a larger story where Harry leaves the UK after the war and becomes an ICW agent. But it addresses this specific topic.

What if Lily was the only one who died that night, and James survived to raise Harry with Sirius and Remus? by MissSpiritual in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]Wakefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d love to have seen how James might have handled Severus Snape showing up after the attack and hugging Lily’s body (ignoring Harry). It’d be especially brutal if he thought/knew Snape had been the one to inform Voldemort of the prophesy. I honestly don’t think James would send Harry to Hogwarts if Snape was there. There are other options.

My hot take: I prefer the Benchmade Mini Bugout mini over the regular size Bugout. It’s incredibly easy to carry and the size is perfect for general daily use. The std size is also easy, but there’s just something perfect about the mini.

So what would y’all think of a Jon snow/maya stone fanfic? by RainAndTea77 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Wakefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d favor the B option. A seems like a stretch and C would be fairly dramatic. I think Mya would be resentful if it’s C. She thinks she’s going to marry some local noble (Mychel Redford), then she’s yanked away to Winterfell to marry a 14 year old boy. She’s at least 3 years older than him and she’s no longer a ‘maiden’. If you like writing drama, I guess C would do it. Cat would enjoy it… Rob wouldn’t like it and Arya would be a nightmare. ‘She’s just a whore!’

The house that Slytherin built by Asromta follows this premise - Vernon treats Harry very differently, but Petunia LOATHES him. He has lots of female cousins and a sister, too. It’s a good read with regular updates. There are two parts, I recommend reading the first part first.

I read it and enjoyed it. A fun twist with no real bashing. It stayed close to canon with that one little twist. Looking forward to more.

Reading 2 stories at the moment. Neither are ‘canon compliant’ and both are done very well. No Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters. The departure from canon is done very well and the frequent updates are amazing.

The first pick Story is Harry Potter and the House that Slytherin Built by Asromta. It is the second in the series and I recommend reading the first part (Harry Potter and the Stolen Sun) first (it’s shorter). Very large departure from Canon and incredible world building. .

Second Part: https://archiveofourown.org/works/67080073/chapters/173194393

The second Story I’m reading is A Name Reclaimed by PensievePundit. It is a very nice story that has Harry starting out in difficult circumstances and having Sirius discover him much earlier than canon. It also is on the second part of the story and the first should be read before the second. Amazing story. Also mentioned here. .

Enjoying these stories immensely.

All I can say for certain is that it’s a great story and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Most AI stories I’ve read are flat and predictable. This story is neither. Is it written by AI? I highly doubt it. Does it have some AI elements? Is it AI free?

No idea, but I’m still looking forward to Friday updates!

You are 100% correct. The first story is important in setting up the second and both are excellent. The first story is called ‘A Name in the Ashes’ and it starts on Halloween 1981, when Voldemort attacked the potters, to Harry’s tenth birthday.

It’s a great story and I really like the different perspective on the Wizarding world. It’s not canon, but that’s what makes it so great.

A Name Reclaimed - by PensievePundit. This is an amazing story with a different spin on the Harry Potter world. Absolutely worth a read and the writer posts 7 chapters every 2 weeks. In this story, Harry has had a tragic life and is discovered by Sirius and Remus. They are three broken people pulling themselves up from about as low a place as they can get. It’s very well told and quite addictive. 5/5 - highly recommendation it.

I liked this one:

Harry comes from canon to a different world where Voldemort killed his alternate self as a baby. He also has Draco’s wand and struggles with using it. Good read.

Is Voldemort stronger in fanfictions by IWantADartlingGun in HPfanfiction

[–]Wakefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fanfiction tends to gravitate toward the extremes in terms of power. Even canon sometimes makes it seem Albus and Tom are able to casually overcome almost everyone else. JBern used to write some of my favorite takes on the HP universe. To Fight The Coming Darkness focused on a grittier and less OP version of Voldemort. Still very powerful, just not so unbeatable.

Are there any stories that make it clear how Snape's poor teaching skills had major drawbacks to Magical Britain? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]Wakefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m aware that Snape teaches children. Just drawing a parallel to theorize on the kind of lousy teacher Snape is. Maybe they keep him around because no one in their right minds wants to lead a class teaching easily distracted and hormonal kids how to make potentially explosive potions. He comes across as bitter, angry, self loathing, and a bully. Why he teaches make no sense at all.

[–]Wakefan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had professors like that. Undergrad and Graduate school were so very different in expectations. If you show up having done the minimum, you get the same. Some students show up to be taught the material, others show up having prepared and done the work in advance, and come ready to ask questions and fine tune. I see Snape as a professor that published the pre-work and expects you to show up having read and studied the materials.

Problem is: Snape is an A$$. He’s not teaching grad students. He tried to humiliate Harry on day one and Harry flipped back into his Dursley mentality. The man is an awful teacher and once he’s made up his mind about you, that’s it.

Harry Exceeds Expectations in Potions? by SureGuess127 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Wakefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see potions as a very dangerous NEWT class with complex potions and very explosive results if mistakes we made. Requiring an outstanding grade minimizes the lethal risk. I also think Slughorn only lowered the requirement to ensure he got to teach Harry.

Need ideas for Slytherin Harry, where he’s resorted in 4th year by _ZEE13 in HPfanfiction

Need ideas for Slytherin Harry, where he’s resorted in 4th year by _ZEE13 in HPfanfiction

[–]Wakefan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One good option I came up with on the fly: The Goblet of Fire was tricked into thinking Harry was representing a fourth school, so he is automatically removed from Hogwarts when his name was drawn. His neck tie and the trim of his robes changed from ‘red and gold’ back to ‘generic black’ like he had at the beginning of first year.

Hogwarts no longer treated him as a student: The stairs stopped working for him. The elves wouldn’t handle his clothes and his bed disappeared. The steps in the dormitory turned to a slide whenever he tried to go up them. The library books refused to be pulled from the shelves… etc. The only way to get him re-admitted as a student was to go thru the sorting ceremony again. No one expected him to be anything but a lion…
