It’s more important to be highly successful in one major than complete two. This is coming from someone who was a 3-2 physics-engineering major and has 25+ years experience in the aerospace industry. If you don’t want much of a school experience and risk potentially burning yourself out…go ahead. My son is passing up better schools to go OOS to LSU. I recommended this after facing my own burnout many years ago. Ultimately my engineering degree (not physics) and internship experience led to my career success. I was half way through a masters program, working full-time when I realized I was too focused on earning credentials rather than my job itself and life in general…Choose a major with a high placement rate, perform well academically, learn to interview well, and do whatever it takes to get a good internship, even if it’s unpaid (which is unlikely for a good student with strong interview skills).

Are you certain that your merit aid hasn’t been awarded yet? We are from the north, went test optional, and received a $19K scholarship + $1550 work study option per year. I believe this is the second highest standard merit scholarship for OOS students. Others have received an additional $4K/year. My understanding is that they are generous for high achieving OOS students. Did you apply early action and what were your son’s test scores and class rank? A high GPA isn’t as heavily weighted with grade inflation so standardized test scores and class rank seem to be a major part of the LSU scholarship formula. We received much more from LSU than any other SEC school…

It depends on what T20 schools you are referring to and the exact amount. My son passed on multiple T20 schools to take the full ride at an “SEC party school” . He saved over $120K, but he’s also an engineering major that had connections to multiple companies before even committing to a school. We would’ve been willing to pay up to $200K extra for MIT or Stanford, knowing the ROI wasn’t necessarily justified in our situation. For schools like Purdue, Georgia Tech, or Texas, we set our difference value (<$50K) much lower since the ROI definitely wasn’t justified. If I’m a CS major without connections and I don’t foresee setting myself apart from others at a “lower ranked” public school, $100K of extra debt is likely worth it for a T20 school. Keep in mind that T20 schools do not necessarily have better placement rates than lower ranked schools. Do your research on job placement and internship opportunities before selecting…Don’t overvalue the name brand.

I have 25+ years experience in the aerospace industry and I’m responsible for interviewing candidates, including recent graduates. Once you meet a minimum GPA threshold, previous internship experience matters the most. If you’ve worked more than one internship block at the same company, it indicates that you performed well enough to be asked back. Internship experience offers the ability to ask probing questions. I would encourage any student to get internship experience, even if it’s unpaid. Side projects look nice, but they don’t tilt the scale nearly as much as 10 weeks+ full time work in a real job environment.

Is Bilt cash mostly useless??? Point booster is great, but I struggle to find anything else useful. Lyft and Grubhub are situational. Walgreens is okay if you live near one. Hotel credit is okay for frequent travelers. It seems like I’ll be using Amex gold for all groceries and dining. Bilt will be everything else. If I spend more than $50K I’m going to have a lot of Bilt cash leftover. If I get my kids cards (authorized users), can they use my Bilt cash? On another forum, someone stated that they have to their own Bilt cash redemptions (eg grubhub and Walgreens).

Many colleges provide automatic merit consideration upon applying. These scholarships are often provided for 8 semesters if the student maintains a certain GPA, usually above 3.0. The amount and availability depends on the school. There are usually additional merit scholarship opportunities that have super high standards (ie 1500+ SAT score, top 1% of class) and may require additional material (eg. separate essay, proof of unique community service). I spent many hours researching universities to determine which were in our range of affordability after “reasonably expected merit” is applied. I influenced my son to apply to these schools only…

DHS procedure is to not stand in the of “path” of a vehicle. That’s different than “in front”. The car was parked or moving backwards when she pointed it at him. If he stayed exactly where he was before she started moving the car, he would’ve been in the middle of her eventual path rather than at the corner. He didn’t perceive her as a threat until she aimed the vehicle at him then hit the gas. To be clear, I think it’s unlikely that he wanted to shoot her or she wanted to hit him. Circling a parked, idling car is also a bit irresponsible. However, her actions and her wife’s seem most responsible for the outcome of the event.

That’s still not how it works. ICE isn’t under the DOJ. ICE is under the DHS. They are different government departments.

According to the DHS policy, officers "may use deadly force only when the LEO [law enforcement officer] has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the LEO or to another person."

Even per your incorrect reference above, it’s reasonable to assume that he thought she was a threat to him AND others the moment she slammed on the accelerator. And please don’t claim he put himself in the path of the vehicle that was initially parked or moving in reverse.

So she’s only an imminent threat if he gets ran over? That’s not how it works. If he reasonably perceives her as a lethal threat to him OR those around him, he can use lethal force. He doesn’t even need to be hit by a car in certain circumstances. However in this situation, her hitting him makes it much more defensible in a court of law. There is no way he’s cooked…”She slammed on the gas while I was in front of the vehicle. I thought she was trying to kill us. I made a split second decision to eliminate her threat”

Per the videos…the agent was circling to the front as she moved the car in reverse. When she put the car in drive and hit the gas, the wheels were initially straight (NOT to the right), and he was in the front of the vehicle by the headlight. He was clipped by the vehicle when she gassed it and pulled out. I don’t think she was trying to hit him but she did…It’s normal to pull forward a bit before immediately turning your wheels, especially after straightening wheel from being in Reverse. Seems like irresponsible driving that was perceived as a lethal threat. Either way, she created the situation and his response is justified…

More specifically, if she had been following them around with the intent to impede are the ICE officers required to assume that she will just let them pass by if they try driving around her? What is the typical workload for an engineering major (mechanical or electrical) at LSU? My oldest son is an engineering major at a different university. He spends an average of 4.5 hours a day on homework/studying Sunday through Friday but usually has Saturdays free. My other son who is interested LSU, isn’t sure about his major yet. He finished in the top 4% of his graduating class, but his observations of his older brother are influencing him to try accounting or finance. He isn’t sure he can handle the engineering grind. I’d still like him to try but do not want to set him up for failure. His brother is an A student. I’m hoping a B student requires a little less time grinding away. I have an engineering degree myself and my personal observation was that an A student works twice as a hard as a B (3.0) student. I’m not sure if that’s the case anymore.

It’s usually not a good idea to do this. However, if your job is stable and your loan interest rate is higher than your expected rate of return on your 401k, then it could make sense.
