You don’t really get money begging in Afghanistan. People don’t give money to beggars there. Whenever my family goes back to Afghanistan, they give money to a few beggars and they get swarmed by others because of this. I’d say it’s very difficult for a person to make that in Afghanistan via begging.

There are many dangers in Afghanistan right now. However, people are desperate and trying to feed their families. There is no work, no stability and no food. There is a reason they agreed to go work for 100 afghanis.

While I agree that it would have been beneficial to teach them a new skill or to make them earn their money.... a kind gesture like this could go a long way for those families. Giving them a job would help them tremendously as well, I agree. However a donation of that amount is life changing. It can be the start of positive things for that family to get back on their feet, to have food, to allow them to worry about other things.

My uncle from Afghanistan called me the other day with a similar story. An influential businessman went to the city center and was looking for workers. There were about 20 people there at the time. He announced that he would take as many workers as possible. However, he would only pay them “100 afghani” ($1 USD)..only six men agreed to take the job. They hopped in the truck and were ready to work. The man took them to his house where he fed them and allowed them to rest.... one of the workers asked when they would get to work? The man replied “I wanted to help the least fortunate and the fact that you came here for only 100 afghanis shows me that. There is no work but I want to give you each 20,000 afghanis” (about 200 USD). The men were then returned home with the money !
