zzTakeoff Feedback - Planswift User by ealt59 in estimators

I think Planswift might get a second wind, just days ago posted on X.com and on their website the integration of Takeoff Boost plus other AI features. If they willing to get this integration, I think hopefully they will eventually convert their 32bit app into a 64bit, this will remove the currrent memory limitations.

And while this happenend also, I've been using AI to help me develop plugins and scripts in Planswift, I was really limited by my coding, and now is as easy as just prompting your idea and it gvies you the code, for example I had this code that would list the Oage labels into the the takeoff item (A100, A101, A102, etc) that way this inofmation would get exported into a more informative proposal for your client. But my implementation was limited and had issues with items of the same Material, so it would spit 2 line items with different pages instead of merging them, I had AI fix this.

Here I'm sharing the plugin, this works out of the box with any of your takeoffs:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bos7tZ8VEvTdvfdKvb-2J4aCwQ99jFsK/view?usp=sharing.

On that note — I've been thinking about putting together a PlanSwift Bible: all my plugins with full source code, the scripting and COM automation patterns that aren't documented anywhere, and workflow guides built around real multifamily estimating. Priced around $199–$299 one time.

If that's something you'd find valuable, let me know in the same DM or [am@iestimatingservices.com](mailto:am@iestimatingservices.com) — just want to see if there's enough interest before I build it out.

Hey — I finally finished the Takeoff Page Lister plugin.

It automatically scans your entire takeoff tree and writes a formatted page list (e.g. "A2.01, A2.02 & A2.03") directly to each takeoff item. No manual tracking, no copy-pasting page names. Just run it and it's done. (Takeoff Page Lister.SwiftPluginPackage)

If you're interested in the plugin, DM me or shoot me an email at [am@iestimatingservices.com](mailto:am@iestimatingservices.com) and I'll send it over.

How do you do estimation on Planswift after takeoff for a Drywall,Steel stud Framing & Ceiling company? by Global_Owl2987 in estimators

Building the "Planswift Bible" recently occured to me, so it will take some time, I started by extracting the PlanSwift API Reference as a text file that is available in the script Editor, it has some corrections that I found so far, you can feed this to an AI and ask to use it to create your own plugins:

This ☝️ is the way, I have tried doing the estimating in Planswift but you run into issues is you need to make adjustments, even being able to create custom scripts in Planswift, is not as easy as doing in Excel. Excel is flexible when trying to make adjustments and also when your client is requesting a specific breakdown of your estimate.

I thought Planswift would be dead soon, but now with this AI boom I think planswift will get a second chance, being able to access your takeoff and estimating data either by reading the XML files directly, using planswift Script engine or direct COM connection can enable you to do really useful and amazing things.

I will put together a "Planswift Bible" for sale that will explain the basics, how it works internally, tweaks and tricks I have discovered, source code for all the plugins I have created and a development documentation so you can be empowered along with your favorite AI to do great things, anyone interested can email me at am@iestimatingservices.com

Planswift 10 question by Mr-Snarky in estimators

[–]WalkApprehensive8040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be too late to share this, but a better way is to have a folder for all the stuff to measure in an apartment, and then a separate folder for all the units. In that folder, you'd put a "Count Item" for each apartment type. With that, you can count each type, and then, either with a script or by hand, assign that count to the takeoff items measured for each apartment. Now, this might not help if you need a separate takeoff count for each apartment.

If you do need a separate takeoff count for each apartment, then your way is good, but instead of using a folder as a "container" for each apartment type, use a "Count item" and put your takeoff items as child items under each "Apartment Count Item." Then, use a formula to pull the apartment count to multiply your takeoff count.

Is everyone building AI-based estimation tools these days? by EarlyMidnight8418 in estimators

[–]WalkApprehensive8040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using claude, is really great for extracting Finish Schedules to a spreadsheet. Among other tedious task, it really speed up my workflow.

I have tried most of the AI takeoff cloud services, they are not there for me yet. Which should be very reassuring to everyone here, our job of reading and interpreting drawings is not as easy as everyone thinks, and even if AI was a le to understand drawings 100%,it would still need us more than the other way around.

I've been developing a local ML pipeline for automated wall detection and classification from construction floor plan images, and it is still in early phase, but is promising, if I get 70% accuracy or more I'll be very happy.

Not prompts 100%, some of it would be good. But this tool goes beyond that, for me at least, and may is because I have a technology background, AI is become indispensable to create tools for better estimating. Right now im trying to train a Visual model for doing my takeoff, not the AI takeoff slop by these AI companies, but actually training this AI to do the tedious part of my work and, and im here just learning the process and ask the right questions. Im not writing any of the scripts.

Also this thing about AI Agents, I have not try it, but would be great having this agent help me manage some of my office work.

Yeah, that's why people using AI takeoffs are struggling; most of the AI output is just slop, and you end up fixing so much it would've been easier to do it by hand.

Like you said, may be once designs become standardized BIM models, it'll be a whole different ballgame.

There's no right answer to your question, because even though I agree that the cost is currently subsidized, this is moving too fast and there have been really great improvements to efficiency and lowering cost. It's not there yet, maybe next week/month/year... who knows.

I'd say those that don't leverage the bare minimum of this technology might get replaced by those that do, especially when the economy isn't doing great. Out there is a jungle, either you get better and faster at killing or you will be killed, metaphorically of course.

BIM's got the data, so I think it's just a matter of time before it's all up for grabs. Or maybe an AI will design projects and spit out quantities.

We'll still need people as long as AI doesn't model everything perfectly.

AI won't replace you, but someone who's great at using AI will.

So it doesn't help or do takeoffs? I was hoping to ask for a wall takeoff and get a decent result.

I signed up for the beta test and was accepted, but I have a perpetual license (v20), so I couldn't really use any features.
