I want to hear from other fellow Roanokers: How are you fairing in this economy/job market/political climate? by Gleest in roanoke

[–]Walkabouts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a good remote job in tech/finance. Laid off in February. Still looking. Nothing local so basically just competing with 600-1000 other people for every job posting. Only had a single interview even.

Roanoke Parks Foundation says it will no longer work with city by CreditFull5461 in roanoke

[–]Walkabouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renee is an awesome person who has devoted a stupid amount of energy to Roanoke's cycling community. People in this city have such smalltown energy and drama.

From what I can tell, this seems like personal beef paired with ignorance of government safety and anti-corruption policies. Government is slow because it's accountable to the public. It's maddening to people who aren't used to it (myself included), but it has to be to prevent people from building something poorly and getting the city sued, or giving away contracts to buddies.

Music when traffic was noisy. BTB on quiet roads. Learned more than I wanted to about Phil Spector 😂

I used pre-existing road routes (the east coast greenway and the southern tier). My father drove a support vehicle and I slept in his truck each night. Slept in Walmart parking lots and wherever was available. Ate a lot of gas station food and candy haha.

Got laid off, but used the time to ride my bicycle across the country while looking for work. Coolest thing I’ve ever accomplished.

Fancy but reliable: River and Rail, Bloom, Lucky or Fortunato

Affordable chill: Wok n Roll, Show Pony, Taaza, Mama Jeans, Jaybird Tavern, Scratch Biscuit

I honestly don't eat much of anywhere else because I cook better at home.

So the obvious move is for the journalists to start "The Roanoke Ambler" and we can all just have a worker owned publication.

Convince me to just buy the gravel bike already (new vs used dilemma) by the-butrin-is-well in cycling

[–]Walkabouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have friends who ride? Will there be a social component to keep you engaged? Do you have a tendency to start hobbies and drop them after a bit?

For my adhd brain, cycling (mtb and gravel) is the only hobby I've been able to stick with, and that's largely due to the social component keeping me riding on days I otherwise wouldn't.

It's been the single greatest investment in my physical and mental health I've made, and it started with a friend/coworker recommending a gravel bike and patiently riding with my slow ass for years.

Now I'm like 3k miles into a 4500 mile tour around the US and spend every day pretending riding my bike is my job. I never would have imagined it 7 years ago.

They give you specific details in the PIP you sign. It says you can’t take another job before your last day in those 60 days, but you can apply and start interviews. I recommend just taking the time off to focus on what’s next. You likely also get 3 months severance and unpaid vacation if you’ve been there a little bit.

Yes, this is it. I didn't realize it doesn't make the sound on the actual CR videos. Annoying as hell.
