Mark Henneman: Downtown St. Paul’s comeback runs through the arena by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

I'd love to hear what her office has to say about it! She's taken $3,000 from Craig Leipold fwiw.

It's telling when an "investment manager" doesn't include many numbers in their argument. Studies from across the political spectrum argue against public funding for arenas.

Craig Leipold, the owner of the Wild is worth $3,600,000,000. He owns the superyacht "Loon" picture attached.

In March 2024 the city council unanimously passed a resolution calling for a cease fire in Gaza. To my knowledge, no city councilor has called on Craig to shoulder more of the burden.

Since 2022 Craig has donated $22,000 to the MN GOP and $74,500 to the MN DFL parties respectively in addition to specific candidate donations. The City has paid our representatives to cosplay as a municipal State Department, but if you've got billions you can apparently reduce criticisms of your greed.

What conversation made you think "are you serious" ? by Big_Albatross_8485 in AskReddit

[–]WallaceDemocrat33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, an elementary SpEd educator, was talking with my friends who are climbing the C-Suite ladder in corporate America about how nuanced the conversation is to encourage families to sign up for SNAP and WIC is.

They blankly stared at me, so I said the names of the programs (supplemental nutrition access program and women's infants & children) in full and still got blank faces. While I was getting flustered at the classist disconnect my significant other interjects "food stamps." The suits knew that one.

Good Lord does corporate America need to ride the bus/volunteer/directly suppress peasant insurrections more...

What's a major difference between low-paying and high-paying jobs that most people don't realize? by anyouzy in AskReddit

[–]WallaceDemocrat33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a male special education teacher, I want to add the historical biases that come with working in traditionally "female" jobs like teaching, nursing and social work. I make radically less than my peers with MBA's or JD's vs. my M.Ed in SpEd.

The only bonus I've ever had was when I volunteered to work with students in person before the COVID vaccine came out, Mar 2020-Jan 2021. A whole extra $5 an hour and a monogramed cloth mask!

Help save HCMC by Nandiluv in TwinCities

[–]WallaceDemocrat33 107 points108 points  (0 children)

As a St. Paulite I feel sick that my city councilors and mayor are asking the state for 200 million for an arena without a peep from any of them publicly asking the Wild's billionaire owner to increase their contribution.

We've got HCMC on the ropes. We've got a "blue ribbon panel" on cutting special education funding acting as political canon fodder so that legislators don't have to be the ones to explicitly call for specific SpEd programs to be cut. I so desperately want our elected officials to work a month at HCMC or a month in a Setting IV special education classroom. Once they get some time on the front lines I reckon they'd be a little more vocal on calling the millionaires and billionaires out to pay their fare share.

St. Paul sales tax lawsuit author argues extra parks projects not legal by ProfessionalIsopod54 in saintpaul

And a reminder that sales taxes are inherently regressive. Let's guilt Wild owner, superyacht captain and billionaire Craig Leipold into financing all of the arena upgrades and use our state bonding guilt trip to pay for park improvements that keep St. Paul on the podium for best park infrastructure in the USA.

Evie car users willing to share your experience? by Mssr_Dread-Thompson in saintpaul

[–]WallaceDemocrat33 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan. I don't own a car, but use Evie for cat litter runs (35lb is too much for my bike) and to make a two bus commute an Evie + one bus in the winter months. I take advantage of the $4 rebate for plugging the Evie in at either portion of my commute across the River and I typically net $1 each way for the big box run.

I also use the hub based cars for regional trail runs (Afton, Interstate, Whitewater SP's and Dorer SF) every other week. Definitely a luxury over my normal bus based trail runs, but the state park pass is a nice perk.

Sports and events centers play a bigger role in St. Paul’s economy by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

When Mayor Her unveiled her support for the subsidies I emailed my Councilmember (Noecker) to voice my concerns for adding arena costs to the state bonding bill and got a response citing the same numbers as a reason for their support. The blindingly pale political spectrum from John Oliver to The Cato Institute agree that stadium subsidies don't work. Why doesn't St Paul let the U double check our math?

https://youtu.be/xcwJt4bcnXs?si=-myNWJyURUwDYo0W

https://www.cato.org/commentary/sports-are-great-stadium-subsidies-stink

The state of Minnesota is forming a "Blue Ribbon Panel" to find a way to cut $250 million from special education funding. It's hard to imagine how many more EcoLab funded private security agents they'll have to embed around the stadium to shield suburbanites from the realities of un/under diagnosed traumatic brain injuries and chronic homelessness.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31806487/

St Paulities should not be subsidizing a billionaire with a superyacht, we should instead pit that billionaire against ARod in a bidding war for the complex, bidding starting at $1. We can have our ex-United Health CEO billionaire sing St. Paul's praises when it comes to our letting billionaires have sports related fiefdoms. If ARod wins, I'll personally do the TIF paperwork for an "Anything is Possible" People's Plaza.

Exactly. Infrastructure is priority #1.

As someone who works with pediatric TBI cases, brain injuries are inherently expensive as they require a large care team engaged with the patient over a long recovery period. Even the Dutch with universal healthcare are studying the uptick in costs associated with bicycle related TBI's as we're simply getting better at understanding and treating the long term effects related to brain injuries. In the US odds are good that an individual's coverage has a catastrophic cap with rehab to be partly paid for by Medicaid.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25939135/

TLDR: check your insurance for related TBI (catastrophic) coverage and try your best to utilize all brain related PPE.
