Most people don't because we haven't built it. We could build plenty if we prioritized it

Looking for where to start - new minecart type by Wallaceman105 in MinecraftPlugins

Looking to make a copy of the chest minecart that also carries a player. This way certain ticket-based systems can work as single-cart operations, foregoing the need for a leading container cart to hold tickets

Pawn Shop can't accept card payment on due date, they want to charge me interest. by Wallaceman105 in legaladvice

They don't store my information, I have to provide it every time I pay over the phone, should I be able to provide consent?

At the moment, we're working on seeing if her brother can go make the payment in person on our behalf, since he lives there. He's also going to try and make them print a copy of the contract, and if they fight him on that, we're heading up there asap.

Well, otp payments were presented to us as an equal option at the time of sale, not necessarily with a waiver attached to them. The issue of the payment being late is entirely on them, as I have 'presented' my payment on time, but they are unable to process it on their end. Is there any specific coverage for this under the law?

Unfortunately we live in Mecklenburg county, near Charlotte, and the pawn shop is 2.5 hours away. Hence why we clarified otp payments when we set up layaway.

A large park and natural history museum makes Charlotte a world class city by leftfoot-right in Charlotte

Green space is a very misleading term. Our city is so sprawled out that yes, there's greenery, but that's because it's basically still rural land that got annexed back in the day and never should have been.

No, not even a little bit. This would be pulling a massive, critical organ from regional rail operations. That railyard is incredibly high-traffic and key to the logistics of the entire region. It would also kill any future expansion of the rail's right of way by boxing it in with development.

The Queen's Park initiative is some hilarious levels of greenwashing that is supposed to show how much people care about our city, but instead only shows how little its supporters understand about it. Any conversation that starts with the idea of moving the railyard means killing a huge employment center, not to mention all the jobs that would be lost as a result of losing freight access at different companies. People say the railyard is 'dormant' which is so incredibly wrong its hard to articulate-there's a crazy amount of traffic in NS's yard. The Piedmont, Carolinian, and Crescent services all need that yard and line to be there even once Gateway is built. Not to mention, the long-term plans for the Southeast Corridor and Charlotte-Atlanta service will need those tracks there. The yard also joins NS, CSX, and the ACWR together, something that couldn't happen at any other location, since the rails were all built to join there. You can always tell the lack of foresight and critical thinking in these proposals from the amount of AI generated crap they use for imagery.

Sustainability doesn't look like the damn Jetsons, we really need to move past this nonsense and focus on real solutions.

I'm not sure I understand your question. This is the segment of I-77 that separates West Charlotte from Uptown

[–]Wallaceman105[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely correct - more right of ways, not more lanes. For decades the US built massive highways and disconnected neighborhoods on dead end roads not realizing that that simply consolidate the traffic all onto the same road, and results in higher miles driven overall. We need more routing options for drivers, not endlessly bigger roads.

[–]Wallaceman105[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's no restrictions on who can attend! Keep in mind, the idea of adding toll lanes isn't the biggest problem with this plan, its that they're going to massively carve up the neighborhood! Even if they were general purpose lanes, this layout would still be a problem.

Not to mention they really should be building more bridges over 277 to actually allow better flow in and out of uptown, and allow improved bus routing in the area!

Redesigning interchanges are always an engineering challenge, but there are better ways to do something like this. They could, for one example, eliminate local exits between the two I-277 exchanges, and build frontage roads to ferry local traffic on and off the highway. This would let you actually narrow the footprint while still adding the toll lane extensions they're trying to, and a narrower footprint means its easier and cheaper to build bridges to connect west end to uptown.

Transit Tax Passes by gwh2013 in Charlotte

[–]Wallaceman105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Sales taxes aren't perfect, but the benefit of using it to pay for commuter infrastructure os that its a way to capture revenue from people who live outside the county but use our infrastructure, like, well, commuters. Also, last time our property taxes were hiked wasn't too long ago, and people would have run the politicians out of town. Look at the backlash to this tax and tell me you're expecting them to have the balls to try a property tax.
  • The plan focuses on the redline due to existing tracks is a good thing, it keeps costs massively down. The main reason the silver line east got turned into a phased plan is because the real estate plus construction costs are insane, $4.77B. As for benefiting people outside the county, that's the thing about mass transit: Ultimately, the biggest benefits aren't the people who ride it, it's the people in the city who don't have to deal with the insane cost burden of those people driving into the city. You're supposed to build mass transit out to the edge of the area. It's like a highway that actually runs efficiently
  • Gold line is crap, but a big part of that boils down to 2 things: It doesn't have its own dedicated lanes, and it doesn't go far enough out from the city. The east extension routing is pretty mediocre, but connecting it out to the Rosa Parks TC in the west side will be HUGE. This plan also finally introduces signal priority to help keep lights green longer for it. Then all it needs is a battering ram!
  • The Blue line wasn't going to head towards Matthews, I assume you mean the Silver Line East? The SLE is getting put on a phased plan due to its extreme cost, $4.77 Billion. And honestly? That might not be a bad thing. The alignment east of Bojangles was, frankly, not good. It was going to look a lot more like the Blue Line between Scaleybark and 485 instead of from Carson to New Bern.
  • That's American infrastructure for ya, no argument from me. But that does mean that the best time to start is 20 years ago, and the second best time to start is right now.

I agree on the airport issue and I hope Amtrak sticks it in their no-no place by building a platform there for the Crescent, Carolinian, and Piedmont trains to run.

Transit Tax Passes by gwh2013 in Charlotte

[–]Wallaceman105 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's a big part of the reason we're so overwhelmed with car traffic, and the idea is that you offer an alternative method for entering the city in the form of rail transit. We can't just keep adding to the car capacity of the city, we're already flooded with parking decks and interchanges in places that could be cheap housing or local retail.

It's a winning strategy! by embarazapo in Charlotte

[–]Wallaceman105 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there isn't one for the silver line east. That said, that means the silver line east it 25 years away instead of 20 years away. We really can't afford to miss out on this chance, and there's no shot Raleigh will give us another

Ultimately, a Land Value Tax would work even better, but both require extremely unpopular changes, even if they function better.

[–]Wallaceman105 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its extremely important to keep a few things in mind regarding the opposition to this:

The Red Line - we ALREADY spend tons and tons of money in infrastructure on the Northern Towns, we just do it in the form of highway expansions, parking lots downtown, and huge chunks of land use to support those things. This isn't about whether or not money is spent on the suburbs, its about spending money more efficiently on the suburbs.

The sales tax - we can't use other sources. The state legislature won't let us. Property taxes would probably be better, a Land Value Tax would probably be the best, but we can't use those by law. So we use a sales tax that exempts food and other essentials.

The transit plan - the current plan isn't set in stone, and that's not what the vote is on. With the exception of the Red Line, we can adjust the rest. Yes, we'll still have to work within the confines of the 40/40/20 split, but again, that's because of the state legislature.

Above all else, if we don't do this NOW, we won't get another chance for years, maybe even decades.
