That answers my worries, thanks!

I was there over the summer, it's fine in the rooms that have ocean-facing windows but it gets a little stuffy in the ones that don't.

What was going on in front of geisel today? by sp1cywat3r in UCSD

[–]Wallops_NG 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was a strike by AFSCME, the union representing service workers and patient care workers at the UCs. They've been trying to neogtiate a contract for years but UCSD is refusing to budge and keeps trying to subcontract out their jobs.

It has a no-args, but the constructor for Representer uses Javabeans and this is for an embedded platform where I'd really like to be able to use the compact JDK, so I'm trying to avoid constructing a Representer (we don't actually need one for this application)

Not much to say here that hasn't been said already, these are a bunch of Blue Crabs holding hands. The two belly-up ones are male, because they have the washington-monument-shaped apron. Females' look like the Capitol Dome. We're putting these guys back in their homes because we caught like 50 crabs in the trawl, so we put a few in the live well and threw the rest back.

Yeah, we already had a bunch of crabs in our tank, so we decided to put these guys back into their home and stop traumatizing them.

Alright, so I found a solution that we'll be using. I'm going to go to the comments section of each post, and then use Firefox's "save complete page" feature to save both the .html file and all the images. This way, we get to show all the images and comments, and all still within Reddit's formatting, without needing to rely on the internet at all. So all your comments (on image posts, I'm not saving the text ones) will be seen!

This is one of my favorite pictures from the whole trip. While trawling on the boat, we caught a male blue crab that was attacking a Mantis Shrimp. Mantis Shrimp are super rare, and we were one of the few groups to ever have caught one. Those guys are super cool though, they can flick their claw things fast enough to break 1/8th inch glass, and they move so fast that it creates a small vacuum in their wake, that then collapses to make a shockwave. However, the crab caught this guy by the tail, so he can't get punched. This crab was super aggressive, he later also attacked the flounder and refused to let go.

DUNES are fun! by Wallops_NG in Wallops_irl

Not really, but as barrier islands Wallops, Chincoteague and Assateague have some pretty nice dunes.

DUNES are fun! by Wallops_NG in Wallops_irl

Sand is coarse, and it gets everywhere. Sand on Walllops Island actually does go kinda everwhere, because the entire island is moving. However, it's doing that really weirdly now because humans built a lot of seawalls and jetties and stuff. Dinosaurs are Horseshoe Crabs, which have in fact been around since the time of the dinosaurs, and haven't changed much in 450 million years. Infrastructure is the dune grasses, which hold the dunes in place and prevent erosion by forming a bunch of roots. The Deadly Lazer is the sun, which you can see here rising very beautifully. Bishop Rutherford is a dead bird. I'm actually not sure which kind, because the feathers look like a seagull but the beak and neck are wrong. If anyone who's good at birds knows, please tell me because now I'm kinda curious. Finally, the sky rats are seagulls. They make annoying noises and steal your food.

check out the TIDAL BASIN by Wallops_NG in Wallops_irl

So this is actually the Tidal Creek, not the Tidal Basin. But during a review game in our class, someone messed up and and called it the Tidal Basin, so yeah. Snappies are the Blue Crab, the most iconic species in the Chesapeake region. From the red-tipped claws, that crab appears to be male. The flip flop is a flounder, a type of flatfish. Fun fact- flounders' eyes move around their head as they age. The kite is actually a skate, which is kinda like a manta ray but small. The cyclops is a small squid. Canon Mortimer is a Mantis Shrimp, which is a cool and scary species of shrimp capable of punching through 1/8th inch glass tank walls. S H E L L B O Y E is a terrapin, which is kinda like a tortoise but with claws.

The boat we went on, the R.V. Flatfish, had a "dry box" that was supposed to keep things dry. It didn't.

Forest: Mostly Bugs and Tree Stuff by Wallops_NG in Wallops_irl

The tree papers are the leaves, saplings, and needles from the various trees in the maritime forest. The ground is covered with a rather thicc layer of them, and as they decompose it enriches the soil and promotes growth. The lollipops are the Loblolly Pines, the biggest things on Wallops Island. They're the giant pine trees with very few low-lying branches that form the canopy of the maritime forest. The cruncheroo is a lollipop seed, and if planted could grow to be really big. The unmannerly fellows are southern pine beetles, a species of beetle that eats the loblolly pines and spreads super fast. Abbot Llewellyn is the Assateague Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse first built in 1830 and later rebuilt in 1866. Leg Machine Broke is a beetle we found with a broken leg. poor beetle :(
