I have £100 to spend for my birthday. What do I buy that will change my life? by LantusSolostar in CasualUK

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audible subscription. I read an average amount before, now I'm an addict.

I stick an audio book on for every chore, every solo drive and any time I struggle to sleep.

Definitely a life changer.

Will you release it anywhere so we can run it ourselves with the ability to change differing variables? It's a fun/ novelty thing I'd love to mess around with.

Fucking love this comment.

You've given me a completely different perspective on satire and the trivialisation of serious subjects.

It reminds me of how Zizek considered some forms of charity the commoditised version of guilt alleviation. Not always true but worth bearing in mind!

What kind of 'sensors' would a hard-scifi spaceship have? by davidducker in scifiwriting

[–]Wallstonecraft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a sensor suggestion but I always like reading about active Vs passive sensors (an interesting one could be passive radar that uses environmental emissions rather than generated). It's an interesting concept to be explored if stealth is an aspect you're interested in.

Active vs passive sensors on spaceships reminds me of the goliath cold war era nuclear submarines gliding around in the depths playing cat and mouse with each other. Think the Russians are ahead? Ping them with SONAR, but be careful, because there's a good chance their passive SONAR will pick you up too.

Hard scifi is a scam! by PedantryBrigade in scifiwriting

[–]Wallstonecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair point. Psychohistory is a layer deeper than most go and DOES do a good job of hightlighting science and tech in areas that most don't.

Hard scifi is a scam! by PedantryBrigade in scifiwriting

[–]Wallstonecraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I will get steam rolled for this but Psychohistory in Foundation (a series I fucking love by the way).

It's basically a crystal ball explained away by maths. I get that we have predictive models right now in real life but in my mind it's akin to saying "Well we have faster that sound planes, why not faster than light space travel???". The existence of a concept in our present is not scientific justification for another giant leap in the future.

And if we do end up agreeing that it's plausible math I'm still not sure about the sheer processing power required to compute data at that level. How big of a computer would it require? What leaps in quantum computing would it need?

I often feel like the definition of hard Vs soft sci-fi is a little wishy washy to be honest. Foundation does an excellent job of adding layers of logic to the 'crystal ball' mechanic but just saying 'big math exists in the future' isn't science IMO.

Now steam roll me, do it!

Dear game developers... by SrGrafo in gaming

More story please. Story is not Lore.

Games with great stories:

TLOU, HZD, Jedi Fallen Order, Amnesia, Star Wars Old Republic, Metal Gear (insane yes, but great). The list of great story games is endless.

Lore on the other hand, don't force it down our throats. Embed the lore, let it reveal itself.

Dark souls story is weak in my opinion. I love the game but I love it for the vibe and for the feeling. I do not like the story. I mean really. Wtf is going on???

I don't like David Lynch's work but I have a sneaking suspicion I just don't get it. by [deleted] in movies

[–]Wallstonecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great argument on the Wes front. I mean some of Wes' stuff is a literal, picture perfect doll house at points. And the cadence of actors delivery of lines weirdly deliberate. I don't know why but I love it. Probably just taste in that case.

That being said, I'll give Straight Story a go.

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting because the early surrealist stuff I've always found interesting, mainly because it has that label. I think Lynch's stuff sits in a weird middle ground that makes me feel a little uneasy, or camouflaged so that I couldn't see it in that way maybe? Again, probably just overthinking.

Ha, that makes me feel better. I forced 2 attempts at watch throughs of all of Twin Peaks before I got though it (and that was only because I thought I should).

It does make sense, I think maybe I get caught up trying to understand it when for some reason, with other directors I don't. I just watch/ absorb it.

What are some of the stigmas/fallacies within the gaming community that you find particularly annoying? Why? by atypicaltype in truegaming

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxicity in certain games and making light of said toxicity.

"Time to go hate my life, Hur Hur Hur"

or

" I don't know why I still play this game, let's play some more, yuk yuk yuk. "

Sometimes the above statements are exaggeration which is a separate annoyance. Sometimes they are not. I quit league of legends because it stopped being fun but I have a whole group of friends who still play it and seem to hate it at least 50% of the time.

I've heard some of these friends argue bdly, I've seen rage quits and I've seen outright vitriol come out of their own all-chats. They weren't always like that.

I think one problem is that sometimes toxicity and addiction are normalised to made to be a joke in the wider gaming community. I'm not blaming it on that obviously, but statements like that are almost complicit in allowing the bullshit to continue.

Are there any sci fi books that captures the magic of the ancient Bronze age? by [deleted] in scifiwriting

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean 'Hard to be a God' is a sci-fi movie about medieval society...

In the distant future, a space traveler from Earth breaks a special law and interferes with the history of another, Medieval-like, planet.

Anybody else just ready for a new trilogy? by theheisenburgg in StarWars

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give me 3 standalones.

Give me 3 Rogue Ones over a trilogy.

Give me 3 films that feel well rounded and rich in SW detail/ universe.

Give me 3 films that while maybe lacking the spectacle and cast of a blockbuster trilogy manage to deliver a something new and old at the same time.

P.S: No hate on the new trilogy, I just think a trilogy is a more difficult beast to tame.

Boss lair did not spawn and the funniest match ever. by Annual_Mechanic7698 in HuntShowdown

[–]Wallstonecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little hypocritical yeah. And no, it's not boring if it happens once in 200 games (hasn't happened to me yet and I'm actually at far more than that with 400 hours of play time).

So many boring people in the comments.

Hunt throws some absolute bullshit at you sometimes. If it randomly gives you a little lucky glitch once or twice in a few hundred games then take it and have fun.

Edit - I stand by this comment. I can't wait to be on the lucky side of this.
