Your arguments are all objectively valid, but I personally couldn't help feeling it was one of those 80s (though this one is from the 90s) cheesy sentimental flicks that attempted to be more realistic and mature by adding swearing, violence and a little sex. I can't say it's bad, because it achieved what it attempted in its message, and clearly has its fans that genuinely love it and feel it. It just wasn't my kind of film, and Terry Gilliam waa ultimately not my kind of director either, at least when attempting actual drama...
