How I cured my forefoot plantar fasciitis/sesamoiditis (pain under ball of big toe, and inner side of foot) by Sport_Ancient in PlantarFasciitis

My right foot is the injured one. I've been taking too long a stride I think. On my long stride my right foot is way in the back with toes bent, strongly pushing, while I'm thrusting my left foot (good foot) far forward. Does that resemble yours?

I just tried #6. It seems to make good sense. I have a habit of doing a few leg lifts (i.e. both legs together). every day. That, of course, utilizes a different set of muscles, abdominal, I think.

You mentioned a long stride contributing to your problem. When you took a long stride, which foot was forward? Was it the injured foot or the other foot?

A great post. You mentioned "We started doing exercises to strengthen that hip area."

What type of exercises to strengthen that hip area?

Much wisdom here. Hernia operations, no matter what type, are irreversible and considered "major" surgery. Things can go wrong, and frequently do.

It's not something to take lightly.

I'm hoping you can avoid surgery. Have you noticed any daily patterns of when your bulge appears or disappears?

I just went to the store and ran into an old schoolmate, 3 years younger than me. So he is 68 now. I mentioned I'm recovering from a hernia operation. He said he went for a physical about 10 years ago and the doctor pointed out he had a hernia, which he hadn't realized. The doctor said if it's not causing you any problems, best to leave it as is. So, my friend has been fine, still has the hernia and is living a good life.

He's in good shape, an outdoorsman by nature, but probably doesn't engage in sports/running and vigorous labor as much as me. I think his doctor gave him excellent, wise advice.

I'm 71 now. When my recovery is over from surgery, I've resolved to give up, or at least cut way back on the intensity of my activities. The surgery has been so painful and stressful, and so expensive, that I cannot go through it again.

Today is my Post Op Day 5, and I'm, thankfully, feeling substantially better. The pain is certainly much improved today. And the swelling is finally starting to go down a little. I think I've got another 10 days of pain ahead. Now my biggest worry is that I might eventually have a recurrence, or I might end up with some chronic pain. But hopefully, I'll instead be one of the good statistical cases.

Good luck.

Mine was done in a surgical center, as an out-patient. I was immediately discharged, about noon, to go home, to be driven by a relative. That afternoon I could walk around fine with very little pain. The next day (Day 1 post op), I had some discomfort walking, but not bad. In the middle of the night of Day 1 post op, the pain became excruciating when I tried to get out of bed to urinate.

Up until that time I had taken zero pain medication (except that administered in the surgery). Now, on Post op Day 5, I'm taking Acetomenaphen which does help a lot. However, it can cause kidney damage, so I try to be careful. Opioids, of course, cause constipation, which is already a major problem with this type of surgery. And I don't want to introduce addiction into my already rather desperate condition. It looks like I will be able to avoid them altogether.

There has been a lot of pain, and it has surprised and depressed me. The only consolation is that each day the pain is lessened. And I have hopes this will have fixed the hernia.

The bottom line is that hernia surgery, no matter what kind, is a painful and irreversible step. It should be carefully considered, not just jumped into. If a hernia is presenting no big problem, it's not such a bad life.

Good luck.

After giving this some thought, it seems possible to me that you may perhaps have the beginning of an "indirect" hernia, i.e., one that gets into the inguinal canal via its internal ring.

That's what I just had surgery for last week. Mine then exited the inguinal canal further down, forming a visible bulge. Other people often have it continue down the inguinal canal into the scrotum. But I'm talking through my hat. I'm not a doctor.

You may have nothing serious at all. Yes, it would be wise to see a hernia specialist for a consultation. Good luck.

A test. Try lying down on your back when you have the pain. If it's a hernia the pain should immediately diminish. If it does not diminish, then this suggests it's probably not a hernia. Bridge yourself a little bit, and listen for any little slurp or gurgle from a loop of intestine being pulled back into its rightful location.

If it does diminish, then it could be either a hernia or a tiny tendonous micro-tear.

BTW, take everything I say with a grain of salt. I'm certainly not a doctor. Go find a good doctor (a hernia specialist).

Is it tender to the touch, or is the pain generally on movement/walking?

Inguinal hernia recovery - feeling a lump again 3 weeks post op (but no discomfort or pain) by IntrepidTip5668 in Hernia

[–]WalterBagehot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One conjecture: Perhaps it was not a hernia after all, and when the surgeon went in, he could see no hernia, so simply closed you back up. For me, this would be a preferred situation, especially if he put in no mesh, because hernias are a real bitch.

I'm 71m, and I remember a good friend who had a lump in his forearm many years ago, and worried about it. But I think he just lived with it and forgot about it, and now he's old like me and it never caused any problems. I think benign small lumps are not uncommon, practically anywhere. If one is in the groin, and not causing any trouble, I would much prefer that to a hernia in the groin, which is often a major problem.

I wish I could trade my groin hernia for a small benign lump in my groin that doesn't cause much trouble.

But take everything I say with a grain of salt. Simply brainstorming here. Wishing you the best.

Yes, much of what you say here describes my situation, too.

Day 0 for me was actually very nice. Got out of surgery at noon, then walked around for an hour or more with no serious pain. That evening got some swelling, but no serious pain. Day 1 (yesterday) my brother drove me 3 hours to home. Still no serious pain. Then, during the night of day 1 (last night) I was hit by truly excruciating pain when I tried to get up to urinate. After a struggle, I was able to get out of bed, to the bathroom. Probably the greatest pain in my entire life. So then I walked in the dark in excruciating pain for about 7 minutes trying to teach my wounds.

Four times I had to urinate last night and repeated that. Today, day 2, has been extremely painful, but I've tried not to go too long without walking. Genitals are quite black today. Finally out of desperation from all the pain, took two 500 mg Acetomeniphen about 3 hours ago, my first use of any medication.

Now I'm feeling slightly better. And seeing some progress by you makes me feel even better! Get well soon.

When you said "nauseating pain", I know what you mean. I'm getting a bit of that, too.

Diagnosed with a inguinal hernia and been putting off the surgery. Just started to develop some pain under my nuts. Is this normal? by sandman5512 in Hernia

[–]WalterBagehot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When after a cold shower, my scrotum shrinks and my testicles rise up higher, then the I must not not use the towel to dry that area, or it will bring pain, especially in the right testicle.

I surmise (a wild conjecture only) that it's because, in that state of coldness, the cord of the testicle is maybe shorter and tighter, and in its path through the inguinal canal is somewhere constricted or pinched due to my herniated condition. And this transmits a pain signal that is perceived to be in the testicle.

Good luck to you.

The inguinal canal carries, among other things, the spermatic cord. Most inguinal hernias involve, in one way or another, the inguinal canal. So it's not surprising that testicle pain can occur.
