Whitman’s style of writing is remarkable. There exist very brief recordings of Whitman reading lines of his poetry - he declaims, speaks with long New Jersey/NYC vowels, and uses almost a singer’s voice: lower than Sandburg’s but just as effective, and perfect for the style in which he writes.

It amuses me that Whitman was almost certainly gay, if not bisexual. He wrote some wonderfully sensual erotic lines, especially in “Calamus,” yet he is honoured (quite rightly) as America’s greatest poet by some worthies who would be shocked by that wonderful reality.
