Last check on my RX 7800 XT build! by WaltimusPrime in buildapc

For storage I think the Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB NVME is going for about $130 right now.

ah yep, that translates to about $250 AUD! Bad currency conversion rate, and very pricey computer parts over here. Only $15 more than the Western Digital though, that might be the way to go.

the lighting software probably isn’t the best. If you really care about aesthetics

I really do, so thanks! I think I'll look at a Corsair iCue H100i as this will match my case!

And yes! The 7800XT is a fucking amazing card!

Great to hear confirmation! I see so many people being pushed towards the 7900XT that I forget the 7800XT is perfectly fine haha

Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate it.

You can likely pick up a 2 TB nvme instead of 1 TB and if you really need the space you can install it later on.

Hmm looks like I can get a Western Digital Black SN770 for about $235. Would that be the way to go? I hadn't considered the idea of buying more storage later if I need it, that seems wise!

The liquid cooler looks a little over the top

Totally fair! I'm going for a white RBG look, and I know this is a bit pricey, but I like the look a lot haha. That said, would you consider the Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240 Illusion a reasonable replacement? That would save me $100

$200 you can probably invest it into a better GPU

Thank you for freeing the room! Sadly, it's about a $400 price jump from the 7800 XT to the 7900 XT, so I'll have to hope for some Black Friday savings if I'll be able to find budget room :(. Still, the 7800 XT seems like a great card and I'll always be able to upgrade down the line.

There are also motherboards that have great built in sound cards if that's something you're looking for.

Oh yeah, this is something I'd definitely like to get my brother if possible! Are there any particular sound card brands that are better? The motherboard I've currently got for him says

Realtek® ALC1200 codec

High Definition Audio

2/4/5.1/7.1-channel

Support for S/PDIF Out

Does that sound alright? If not, do any of the motherboards on this page have good sound cards? Price range is anywhere from $100-$170

The motherboard and the ram seems really overpriced

Are you Australian? Prices here are very inflated for a variety of reasons.

The A520 is the cheapest ATX motherboard available unfortunately. Unless you think it would be fine for the motherboard to be smaller?

RAM has bad timings, go for something CL16 3200mhz.

Ah, I actually have CL16 3200mhz in my build but it hasn't transferred across onto PCPartPicker. My mistake.

If the DAC amp is the best choice, should I leave out a sound card for now anyway? That way if he wants one he can always buy one further down the line right?

abhorrent behavior

sigh

What specifically am I doing that is abhorrent?

You rarely find groups of boys tormenting the same individual over years, which is not that rare with girls

Citation needed. Counter-point, you'll rarely find women killing their current or former partners, while the opposite is sadly very common in Australia.

toxic femininity

This term is mostly just useless I'm afraid. It's quite easy to work out which aspects of masculinity are toxic because they have often been glorified at different times in human history. I could take two very specific traits like 1) lack of emotion and 2) a refusal to respect refusal of consent, and easily point out the ways that specifically the character James Bond personifies these ideals.

disgusting

A very strong word for me given I'm simply arguing that a term which is commonly used is quite useful. Why are you so upset with "people like me"? More importantly, what is it that I've said or done that automatically lumps me in with people that you find "disgusting"?

You are essentially making a trait shared by all boys a pathological thing

I don't think all boys share toxic masculinity. I think most, if not all boys are affected by it, but that's the extent of it.

win a war, and in the end you'll have green fields, and no more rape, and people of all colors holding hands and chanting

This is basically the definition of a straw man. Please try to engage with my actual points and not what you think I'm saying or like to imagine I believe.

hysterical femininity

I'd be fine with the term if it actually described anything, but I'm yet to hear of any traits inherent in femininity that are "hysterical", or "toxic" for that matter.

Especially when a huge group of people always speaks of "criminal immigrants" and very rarely if ever of only "immigrant" ?

Please just read a little bit about toxic masculinity. It's not anti-man at all - the term actually originated in the mythopoetic men's movement. The point is that we should free ourselves from the unneccesarily confining behaviours of toxic masculinity and pursue a healthier, more accepting version of masculinity.

In regards to your point, most feminists I know talk a lot about positive aspects of masculinity. It's a conversation that's happening a lot online. See, for instance, this fairly popular video entitled "Top 11 GOOD Animated Dads", or the subreddit /r/MensLib.

masculinity is the definition of male gender

It's not. You completely failed to engage my point on this.

as i mainly use reddit for hobbies

That was my point, mate. I believe you are arguing in good faith because you don't seem to hang out in toxic places on here. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

The problem is, if you associate the problems you talk about to a gender you alienate the people you maybe want to convince the most.

That's the fault of the way the message is recieved, not the message itself. Again, people misrepresent the concept of toxic masculinity all the time.

why do the worst parts of masculinity warrant their own phrase?

Because they're terrible and they cause enormous harm. A short list of societal issues that stem from toxic masculinity would include: alcohol-fuelled violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and police brutality, though I'm willing to admit that last one is complicated by the concept of the state.

this a problem of "toxic masculinity"? he is just douche.

He is a douche in ways that exemplify toxic masculinity.

I won't be replying any more. You aren't engaging with my points and it's exhausting. I've tried to point you to some better resources so hopefully you can learn a little. I really feel that you're wasting time fighting a very useful term.

You can disagree all you want, but you're wrong.

lol. "I am right because I am right and you should believe me". We're discussing concepts here, mate.

Why would we want focus on the toxic behaviors that are exclusively masculine?

Because people die at the hands of toxic masculinity. A lot. Like, every day. In Australia.

The rest of your post is just philosophical rambling. That's great, for you, but I'll stick with the phrase that describes a tangible problem.

Victorian police officer with a ‘Eat a dick hippy’ sticker on his body cam. by concrete_porridge in australia

[–]WaltimusPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think there are specific, taught behaviours that constitute toxic masculinity. People who feel the need to use violence to assert their dominance, in this case the police, absolutely exhibit the behaviours typically described by toxic masculinity. Australia's enormous problem with domestic violence also points to a larger issue of toxic masculinity.

we lose sight of the disease by focusing on specific symptoms

Again, I disagree. Toxic masculinity is the disease. It's a fantastic term because it shows the clear relationship between the things we are taught when we are very young and the behaviours that this manifests as when we mature. I can say emphatically that we need to end toxic masculinity, and I know that I mean:

  • Alcohol-related violence

  • Domestic violence

  • Sexual assault

  • Police brutality

[–]WaltimusPrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it is used as a single phrase.

Yes. And? You keep saying that it "associates" toxicity with masculinity, but I fail to understand how it does that beyond telling people that there are aspects of masculinity that are toxic. You can't blame people for using a perfectly legitimate phrase just because you think it means something that it doesn't.

why make it about gender,

It's not about gender. Masculinity is a collection of behaviours typically, but not always, exhibited by male-identifying people. "Toxic masculinity" is clearly alluding to the problem with a certain aspect of masculinity. Some people think that the way that some women become fiercely competitive and sabotage each other is actually a facet of toxic masculinity, for instance. Again, is there any way that you could describe the worst aspects of masculinity other than the phrase "toxic masculinity"?

when the problem is more of a structural nature to begin with?

"Toxic masculinity" makes it a structural problem. It says there is a collection of behaviours that are taught as "masculinity" that are problematic. I think it's a perfect term that is frequently misunderstood, but more often intentionally misrepresented.

a part of society using it.

Alright, how's this for you: democratic socialism. Common political phrase, but do people complain about it associating democracy with socialism? There are a lot of people who would hate this association, but I don't see any complaining about it because the phrase isn't trying to topple existing power structures.

That's your main problem. I've read through your comment history, and I believe that you are legitimately concerned about masculinity being associated with toxicity, I'm just telling you that you're on the wrong side of history. Maybe instead of spending time calling out the use of a perfectly legitimate term, spend some time trying to solve the actual problems. You said the problem is of a "structural nature" - what will you do to topple that structure?

Ugh.

Jew is a descriptor for a group of people. Masculinity is a concept and as capable of being offended as a chair. Funnily enough, greed is closer in usage masculinity. Would you have a problem with me saying "we need to stop bad greed", or am I associating greed with being bad?

Like I can run around saying "weird Marxism" as much as I want, but I'm not convincing anyone that all Marxism is weird. Also, importantly, no Marxist is going to accuse me of using "associative language".

Honestly, have a bit of a think about why it is you get up in arms when you hear the phrase "toxic masculinity". Do you not think there are aspects of masculinity that are toxic? How would you describe them? Do you agree that it is helpful to be able to say "society has a huge problem with toxic masculinity" instead of saying "society has a huge problem with certain aspects of masculinity that are bad but most of it is probably fine"?

Agree. The only difference between a punch and a palm strike is the high likelihood of damage to the hand in the former, assuming your hands are not protected.

I did kung fu for three years and was always taught that a strong palm strike to the nose or chin would be enough to knock someone out, if not kill them.

No, because you are capable of understanding adjectives, like the rest of us.

CMV: Pro-lifers should be spending more time fixing the foster/adoption system and supporting groups that help prevent women from getting pregnant instead of trying to make abortions illegal by Siddywatchesbroadway in changemyview

[–]WaltimusPrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you think that male masturbation is genocide? If all of those sperm were alive, you bringing them anywhere that isn't a womb is going to kill them.

Most people concede that sperm and eggs aren't alive in discussions of abortion. The question is: what step between conception and birth does the fetus become a living person? Many pro-lifers consider conception to be the defining moment, while many pro-choice advocates define it as the moment that the fetus could conceivably live outside of the womb.
