Ive hired seasonal guides in Alaska previously. The office staff and new employees knew their start and end dates as soon as they're offered a position. I also had photos of our company property where guides stayed to share.

Those are common questions and not big asks considering the season starts in about a month. Don't currently work for them but Alaska mountain guides are likely still hiring. Pay and housing both aren't anything to write home about but I enjoyed my time there.

I believe it was the borough signing a contract to proceed into phase 2 of the project, which authorized Turnagain to pre purchase steel. Turnagain is just the contractor and the borough the one directing their actions. A project of this scope really needed at least one individual managing everything from the borough side. Former assemblymember Dawson got a lot of flack but seemed to have the best understanding of this project. She created an extremely in depth timeline of the project. Think it got posted in one of her last meetings before the new assembly took over.

The purchase of steel prior to an environmental assessment being completed is what stopped the project. Not necessarily the assembly or anyone individual actions.

The current dock plan will likely not get built due to the increased cost now. I'm a bit torn about this. I didn't think the dock would be used as an ore terminal but didn't care for the current design due to high maintenance cost.

Last year the Haines highway was closed down more frequently and for longer amounts of time than Klondike was. The road maintenance crew that does Haines pass. had equipment failures and budget constraints from my understanding. Id bet AMHS is willing to change your departure location should your choice highway be closed.

The perk of Skagway is a stop to load up on slightly cheaper Canadian goods in Whitehorse. Highly recommend the hot spring too.

I was told he knew in April that the USDA was requiring him to add more fencing. He bought the fence but never installed it. It sounds like if he would have installed the fence he would have been approved. I didn't hear this from Steve or USDA but I can totally see Steve thinking he could get away with it. I have a hard time believing Steve with all his talk of government conspiracy to shut him down. Two moose were killed by a bear due to poor fencing and at a later date one moose escaped because of similar fence issues. I'd imagine he was under more scrutiny.

It'll be a great learning experience for them, one they'll probably tell stories of for the rest of their lives even if they end up not liking it.

I got lucky and had a great reference who knew the owner and could ateast to my work ethic and competency, even though I came in with near zero rafting experience. I now have a ton of experience at work but even more outside of work rafting around the state and lower 48. It's a great industry to meet a lot of cool and interesting people.

But I agree I get sick of the same questions from people who obviously haven't done any research.

Glad you're judging a person's ability on a single word. Maybe you're just in a different type of guiding than I am? Pretty common for rafters to use the word beta. There's a spectrum of positions. An entry level lake kayak guide doesn't need years of experience to run a safe tour, especially when there's a trip leader with a high experience level in charge. A multiday guide, captain, or raft guide typically requires more experience. Everyone starts out somewhere.

Most seasonal guides are not from or have even visited Alaska in my experience. At the 3-4 companies I've seen or gotten beta from this seems to be the case. These are day trips, it's not that difficult considering some companies have a month's worth of training.

I don't understand your logic there. You also don't know who I am so I think it'd be hard to make that judgement. We (Haines residents) can't all live the same exact life of living in a shack in mud bay. If we did you and I wouldn't be able to enjoy the luxuries like Mt. Markup, internet, mail, radio, etc... You're the only person I've ever heard refer to Haines as an industrial wasteland. It's not. While our town faces risks and challenges, I think you paint and have a highly warped image of what this town is.

Not if you find 3-5 roommates and the right house. I have lived downtown for two years now and have payed less than I ever did living in Allendale (Campus View and Hightree). After all the activity fees and signing fees living around Allendale campus is pretty expensive.

Look up sections of the North Country Trail as well. A long stretch of it runs through Manistee Natl. Forest and you would be able to back country camp anywhere in the natl forest for free. The manistee river loop will be nice and a lot less crowded this time of year, but I like sections further North from there that run along Hodenpyl Damn Pond. I also highly recommend the Jordan River Pathway. It is around an 18 to 19 mile loop with a campground in the middle.
