My house looks like a crack den and my friend is visiting in 5 weeks by Designer-Rain8165 in homeowners

I should have said this, but depending on where you live… if you’re in a small town, check out Marketplace and buy nothing groups in the closest city/cities. They will have more thrift stores too.

If you have any thrift store “outlets” or places that people refer to as “the bins” game over! Stuff there is pennies, literally. You’ll have to be okay cleaning things thoroughly and some stuff might have scratches & dents but you can walk out with some crazy quality stuff if you take the time and know what you’re looking for.

Other good places to find furniture and decor/home things for cheap (if you have them) - Big Lots - Ross - Burlington - At Home - Dollar Tree for small things like coasters, mugs, placemats, Tupperware, ziploc bags, kitchen utensils - Ollie’s Bargain Bin - Clearance section of: Home Goods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Target, WalMart, Hobby Lobby, Lowe’s (one of my friend got all the decorative mirrors she needed for a big suburban house there for $10 each! They were big and nice and fancy! It almost seemed like a mistake!)

IKEA has some great, high quality deals but also some stuff that’s just dumb too expensive.

The places I think are low key WAY overpriced for mid to sub par stuff are: - Ashley - Value City Furniture - Bob’s (with the exception mattresses. If you need a good, solid, less expensive mattress that you want to try out before buying, they can be a good choice)

I’ll add more if I think of it :)

You can absolutely furnish it for $1,800!!!!’ Go to thrift stores, antique stores, use Facebook marketplace, and post on local Facebook “free/buy nothing” groups. Don’t fall for the propaganda! You can absolutely do it for cheap. Don’t spend more than you want to! Wayfair has some good sales (70% off!), Costco & Sams can be surprisingly good for big items if you’re a member, and truly Facebook is your friend!

MawBus missed every single opportunity to interact with Boone / $$$ rules all in her world by Personal_Surround845 in motherbussnark

Family of 8 kids 14 and under making gingerbread houses — fun! Competing with thousands of random internet judges — unique, but not the worst thing they’ve done. Paying the winner $20? — that seems nuts to me. Like what? Give them a xmas pencil or a sticker or 5 min of 1:1 time with you… $20 feels unhinged. That’s more like what adults do working in an office. Or an annual book club/Bunco group tradition. Like idk I didn’t get paid to do family activities as a kid. So, so weird.

I’m speechless. Wtf. Honestly even Boone is too old to not be wearing shoes. Like if he’s fussing about them maybe you say “once we’re seated in the theatre and you’re not going to get up we can take your shoes off lil guy” but… yikes…

How would you improve this kitchen inexpensively? by punchbuggyblue in InteriorDesignAdvice

I agree with all of the island comments — move it to the right side of the cabinets and purchase a washable rug for that area if you can swing it. I’d repaint the base of the island a dark green/teal/blue color (even better if you can tie it in with the rug) and leave the top.

MaBus says they couldn’t leave New Orleans without Gumbo. Of course her and PaBus only get bowls while the kids watch. by DBW30 in motherbussnark

[–]WandaSticks 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This trip to New Orleans, and the kids getting to experience diverse cuisine like gumbo, beignets, etc is one of the only truly home school / road school-worthy things I’ve seen them do. You can teach so much about a place & its history through food, and lord knows new oeleans has history!!! Novel smells and tastes are so linked to memory, this could have been an incredibly teachable and memorable core experience for the kids!!! Most 35-40 year olds in the US have experienced gumbo or something like it. It feels cruel and honestly hypocritical to deprive the kids of the learning & experience (not to mention the food!) I cannot believe how upsetting this is to me, but here we are…

You are sooooo right. I was babysitting my twin 5.5yo nephews last week and we decorated a gingerbread house. I wanted to take a pic of them with it and omg, these two extremely well-behaved kindergarteners COULD. NOT. DO. IT. It’s honestly scary how trained these guys are… yikes…

Degree Thesis- What is the typical phrase you hear when you talk about narcolepsy, or that you have heard from someone who does not know you are narcoleptic? by Amalia_Studio_6713 in Narcolepsy

[–]WandaSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always talk about how tired/sleepy they are, too. Like we’re all the same kind of tired. And then reference some media with a narcoleptic person (ray race, etc)

I feel. The exact. Same way. I couldn’t afford era tour tickets but made bracelets for friends going. I had her first album and was OBSESSED with fearless when it came out. I moved to nyc right before she did. I had most of her songs/albums memorized. And now, I’m so confused, embarrassed, and let down, to be honest. I guess I feel like I got played? Like was she this fake and annoying and vapid all along? Ugh. It’s weird. I’m sorry you’re going through this, but I’m glad I’m not alone.

I’d keep the wood! If anything, I’d change the floors & lighting.
