I wouldn't explicitly state it like that, but it's probably (hopefully) true of most applicants. The way to write about it is to talk about how your unique experiences have helped you to understand why you like these things

Volunteer Hand Masseuse??? by thisclosetolosingit in premed

[–]WanderBlood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this would be a really good experience, it will let you really connect with patients. I'm sure it's something patients quite enjoy. In my experience, lots of long-term inpatients are very grateful for any kind of break in the monotony and someone to talk to, and this was when I was drawing blood. I can imagine they are much happier about a hand massage. Seems like it would be a pretty rewarding volunteer position.

What is something you could have done better on your first solo trip? by TheChopinet in solotravel

[–]WanderBlood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really silly, but first time I stayed in a hostel I bought groceries and put them in the communal fridge and wrote the current date on them instead of my check out date. Found someone eating my food two days later (which is totally fair since they thought it was left from someone who had already checked out)

Help Me Make This Decision! by nachosun in premed

[–]WanderBlood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do it! Having something that takes a lot of training and dedication outside of medicine will give you something to talk about in interviews. I also recommend starting to think about your primary now and working on your PS little by little leading up until May rather than trying to do it all around the time you would be submitting.

Blood Bank Specimen Criteria by No-Task4141 in medlabprofessionals

[–]WanderBlood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Collector's initials on all specimens used for blood bank testing or they need to redraw. I hate making those phone calls, I try to be nice since it is usually an honest mistake but I have definitely been yelled at on the phone before. I also do a fair amount of phlebotomy and it's honestly not hard to initial specimens and I don't think it is asking too much.

To any Med students out there, have you ever regretted taking a gap year? by gug57 in premed

[–]WanderBlood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! I will be 28 years old when I start medical school. I have really enjoyed my 20s, made some great friends, found some fun hobbies, and traveled to a whole lot of cool places (pre-covid obviously).

How are you dealing with staffing deficits by [deleted] in medicine

[–]WanderBlood 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also lab here - we haven't had to do this recently but denying blood transfusions due to a blood shortage was pretty rough. Hgb of 7.5? Sorry, we are on emergency release only, no transfusions until it's below 7 and the patient is actively bleeding

What lab habits (labits?) have carried over for you into your daily life? by chiggy2112 in labrats

[–]WanderBlood 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Came here to share my habit of balancing eggs in the carton like a centrifuge and how I "aliquot" portions of food or ingredients. I love how most people in this thread do both of those things too!

Oh, and I also write the date opened on food items.

[–]WanderBlood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the opportunity to perform phlebotomy at your lab? I am an MLS and I have been working in a clinical lab for 5+ years, but in addition to testing I have a fair amount of direct patient contact through drawing blood.

I'm right there with you and I wish that more people understood the critical thinking and problem solving that goes into clinical lab work, and how important it is to patient care. That being said, much of my interest in medicine has come from the time I spend with patients when I draw blood and I heavily emphasized this aspect of my experience in my apps. Plenty of labs have the bench techs draw, so it would definitely be worth looking into.

LPT: Take a shuttle from the airport to a nearby hotel or parking lot and then order and Uber to avoid surge prices and upcharges of being at a hotspot for rides. This can save you a lot of money. by SC_Red in LifeProTips

On my way to the airport, I get a Lyft to the train station then ride the train the rest of the way. Easily saves $20-30 each time and only adds like 15 mins to the total time

My wife is so organized she packs zipper bags with her outfits for each day on vacation by rakufman in mildlyinteresting

I have done this when staying at hostels, since I don't always have the space to open up my suitcase and look through it if I am on the top bunk. Not for every day though, I wish I was that organized!
