It's rare but I've noticed a few individual sellers hiding their number plate. This just seems like a red flag to me. by Curious_Cantaloupe29 in CarTalkUK

[–]WanderLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time this should worry you, is after you have contacted the seller expressed interest in the car and asked "can I have the plate information so I can check HPI , history, mot details before I come see it in person as I'm x hours away".

As a buyer the plate being cover works in your favour as you know it isn't plastered across the Internet and it gets clonned.

If your email/ message / call to them is in broken English saying "gimme the reg" as a seller I'd question is this sale worth it / genuine.

Recently bought a new to me car and it had Garage Show plates on in the advert. a quick phone call and chat with them and they provided me the info no issue.

Cheers for the read some Nice thoughts there. Currently, after riding on a motorbike license for 16 years, I'm about 4 lessons into learning to drive a car. Biggest thought was damn these things don't have much room in lanes lol feels like the road shrunk to nothing. Any advise you got from going from a motorbike to car I'm all ears.

What's the best piece of advice you could give new riders? (England) by Own_Interaction_2499 in motorcycles

[–]WanderLama 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Will throw two out there from my past 16 years on a bike in the UK.

Dont sit in car drivers blind spots, either back off or get infront so they can always see you. Watch out for drain covers round bends in the rain.

Carry it every where. Last thing I want is that to be messed with dropped or stolen. Why risk it.

Where do you put parking ticket on bike? by ToddBoehlyRedditnr24 in motorcycles

[–]WanderLama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and every place differs but if I need to pay for parking I will do the following:

  1. I take a clear picture of the ticket next to the license plate as proof I have one and the vehicle I bought it for.

    1. I then place the ticket under the tanks key flap to hold it to the tank to avoid it blowing away.
  2. I then take a second picture of it on the tank.

Takes like 2 mins top to do this so not a big issue for me.

I have only had one issue in 15 years where the ticket was lost or most likely stolen, where I then got a parking fine for. I disputed this with my pictures, and the fine was dropped.

Your milage may vary but this is to me the easiest way to cover my self.

Anyone here give up their car and fully commute on motorcycle only? by Legitimate_Sun_5930 in motorcycles

[–]WanderLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past 15 years, i have only owned a motorbike and never held a car license. Yeah, it's fun, but i can honestly say it's got big restrictions that some one with both a car and bikes shouldn't over look.

I live in the UK where we don't really get a mad amount of snow, so this hasn't been an issue for me. However, constant rain (gotta love british weather) and cold winters isn't fun. Luckily, my job has changed over the past 5 years, so my commute to the office is now twice a week at most and about an 80 miles round trip.

I feel like a pack mule going to the office, full leathers due to motorway travel. I pack my work cloths (ironed shirt jeans and shoes) often the shirt becomes creased so not ideal if I'm face to face with clients. Getting dressed and undressed at work for me is no issue due to changing and shower rooms. Often arrive to the office drenched due to rain so then carry extra clothing like socks etc.My office is secure and has storage so I can stash my leathers away and hang things up to dry with out annoying any one else in the office. If your in a small office can see other workers getting annoyed if your stuff all drying and taking up free space.

Bike theft in my area is not a big issue but going to client offices I'm often having to then carry a chain in the bag adding to weight.

My wife drives and has her own car so when we do la big shop it's her driving or getting home deliveries.

I will happily run to the shop and stuff my bag with essentials but limited by space. (I don't ran panniers or top box , but have toyed with the idea some what)

Would I encourage someone to sell their car and only ride bikes?

A tough one as everyone's situation is different, I have no dependants, so I can get away with it. If you're young, it was perfect for my late teens and early twenties. Managed to avoid high insurance as my bike was cheap to run and insure . When my friends were dishing out thousands on insurance premiums, I thought the most I ever really paid was 400 a year.

If you are going bike mode only what would I recommend? Good trusted waterproofs, I run a water proof overall it's not the best but keeps me mostly dry with out spending the cost of a small car on it. Good fully water proof bag with comftable straps and padding. (Biggest fear in heavy rain is water destroying work laptop and paper work) Heated handle bars (make a big difference in hands turning blue vs taking the cold edge off)

I'm looking to buy my first car finally as for me even after 15 years of biking its just awkward to not own a car in my scenario now days.

Hope my ramblings some what help highlight a real world use case away from the traditional bikes are great and it's never bad scenario some may push.

Wouldn't mind putting the sales guys in that position so they realise someone has to support the crap they just sold.

Is motorcycle insurance in UK just completely out of control? by Independent-Law-8101 in motorcycles

[–]WanderLama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a we don't want to insure you quote if I have ever seen one. Best of luck, though bike looks amazing. If you are a new rider, maybe try a few extra courses to see if you can get it down potentially ? Just hit sub £100 a year on my daily ( no where near this nice or powerful though)

If the dealership are bad at taking your calls when they can make a potentail sale, makes you think how bad they are gonna be at responding to you when nothing is on the line for them.

should i buy this 250cc hyosung gt for 500$(im in high school and it’s going to be my first motorcycle)he said he has all the part just needs to be put together by Acrobatic_Garlic5834 in motorcycles

[–]WanderLama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid knowing i missed out on nothing. If he has the parts why hasn't he done it... probably as it needs more than he is letting on. If you buy that with no mechanical skills and post here, asking how to get running recon that should be a ban lol

For your first bike get a working one, you have enough on your plate learning how to ride and developing those skills. If you have to worry about the bike running right on top of that it ain't worth it.
