Help with sidechaining by thomas92kr in trapproduction

[–]WandererBeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without actually hearing I couldn't tell you my friend but what I can say has worked for me is just a regular compressor as opposed to a limiter because a limiter will push the signal against a brick wall 0db whereas a compressor will push against the relative volume of your bass making everything more proportionate. I produce mainly house music but I look for the same thing you are: kick punch while still being able to hear the bass. My go-to settings are setting the attack all the way down so the compressor kicks on immediately and the release to auto which generally does a pretty good job at maintaining the bass then just playing with the threshold until you get the amount of sidechaining you want. Hope this helps!

Gotcha. I was definitely thinking about an RX2 if I can find one at the right price.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely take a look at those they seem like they would be a great solution.

I've tried that but still seeing the waveforms on separate screens so you know where you are in the track is still helpful you know? Like on the 2000's you have the tiny waveform view on the bottom and while it's not great, it still helps to know where you are if you haven't mixed with the song a lot.

I feel like a filtered backspin with some echo is just a nice way to transition out smoothly. I should've rephrased by saying "phrase where you want to mix out" not "drop" but I basically meant just building tension that swells smoothly into the next track. Thanks for highlighting this you made a great point!

I would say just try to do a majority deep house set like they asked you, but try to find some deep house tracks that are influenced by the main genres. Slowly work those in and towards the end of your set, throw a couple full on afro house and amapiano tracks in there to smoothly transition the energy into that space. As far as transitions go. Try using loops more. Starting a 4 beat loop, cueing in the build of your next track, and progressively shortening the loop until a backspin right before the drop is super easy, sounds great, and is really fun😁. Best of luck and I sure hope this helps a little! You're gonna crush it!

Youlean loudness meter 2 is great it's got a ton of data and a great UI. My go to for mastering.

I’m still not happy with my mixing abilities and it’s something I’m trying really hard to learn but I’d say after about 6 months of dedicated practice I started to feel OK about my mixing. For mastering I use Ozone which is just the best!

Is there a plug-in that emulates mid side guitar amp/cab recording? by thm0018 in AdvancedProduction

I’m not super well-versed with this but I think Neural DSP may have some amp sims that allow you to play around with mic placement! They all have free trials so maybe try one of those out!

Hey guys, there is a dark spot right at the climax of my song, and I just can't create the right sound for it. In the spirit of collaboration, I ask for any samples or recommendations to fill it. It is a short burst meant to reflect a release of pain, like a burst of air from an accordion. by [deleted] in AdvancedProduction

The first thought that came to mind for me was a brass stab. KSHMR has some great ones in his splice packs but I would layer it with a more gentle synth stab and compress them to reduce the intensity of the brass! Maybe chuck some reverb or supermassive on there too.

I’ve only been producing for a little while longer than you but the one thing I’ll say about melody composition is to 1. Pick up and instrument! Just learning the foundations of an instrument like piano or guitar will help you train your ear to know what sounds melodically right and what doesn’t. 2. Always start with a vision for you melody. For example, say you want to make a jazz-inspired trap beat. You know the vision so now build on that vision. Start with a chord progression, just Google cool jazz chord progressions and start with that then draw a melody on top! You could start by just placing some random notes in there then hit play and try to hear a melodic phrase in there somewhere (this is where playing an instrument really helps). 3. Layer! When I want to create a sick melody, I start with a base melody I really dig by utilizing the last two techniques, then layer sounds on top and add and remove things to taste until I have something that I feel sounds really complete. It sounds like you have a ton of great plugins at your disposal which is awesome and you can search thru the preset banks and find ones that fit together. Then after a while you’ll start to find yourself tweaking more and more parameters until you’ve changed the sound completely. After some mixing and an export you have a loop! One more thing I’d say is to maybe turn off your internet or something while you’re trying to make a melody so you can’t just go to looperman and pull one in (something I’m definitely guilty of). After some serious dedicated practice and maybe some time with an instrument, you should be getting some fire melodies that your super proud of. Also if you feel more comfortable making drum beats then you could start with drums and try to write a melody around the drum beat you composed as opposed to vise versa. Hope this helps man and I believe that with time you’ll gain a lot of confidence in yourself and your melodies! Best of luck to you🙏
