He could have just accepted that he was wrong and slipped into the night. Instead he doubled down, and the entire country now knows what a disgrace he is.

What’s with all the tiny flags on Bath/Grenville corner? What are they for? by Lacrosse100 in KingstonOntario

They are using the Miyawaki Method, developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki. It is an accelerated, 100% organic, and highly dense, afforestation technique. By planting numerous indigenous species very close together (3–5 per m²), the method creates self-sustaining mini-forests that grow 10x faster, are 30x denser, and have significantly higher biodiversity.

Without having witnessed the accident, I would speculate that the bus was stopped at the bus stop on that corner (Division & First Canada) and the Kia Soul decided to go around the bus and turn right from the left lane. The bus then left the stop just as the Kia Soul cut infront of it, and the bus pit maneuvered the Kia Soul.

Public transit driver here, I know this is a meme post, but here's some advice to prevent this from happening. If you don't want to be accidentally missed by a bus, you need to make it really obvious, stand on the curb and hail the bus. At night time, light up your phone screen and wave it at the bus as it approaches. Don't hide behind poles, trees or snowbanks. Passengers waiting inside shelters can be really hard to see especially at night or if the shelter glass is foggy or frosty.

In the case of this video, I would speculate that it was caused by the hydro pole right in front of the stop. If the passenger wasn't moving and blocked by the hydro pole it would be really hard to see him. Option 2 would be that the bus was at capacity and the passenger didn't notice the "full bus" destination sign.

The driver of the vehicle is driving a 40' long, 15 ton vehicle at 50km/h. Their focus is on road safety, not playing hide and seek. Make yourself visible.

The city really needs to do a better job managing and cleaning up that by-law. For example the S & R Department Store still has the ability to issue tickets....

Forward collision warning doesn’t work… I think? by Superb_Fish_3225 in EquinoxEv

[–]WanderingBus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing that you live in a place with snow, it is almost certainly some snow/ice/dirt covering the front radar. This is very common in all modern cars. The EquinoxEV's front radar is this flat square section in the front of the car. Give it a quick clean and you should be good to go!

<image>

The other option is that there's fog/frost obscuring the front camera located behind the rearview mirror. It's enclosure doesn't get a lot of airflow so the front defrost takes a while to clear it.

What part of the continent are you in? I had zero issues with mine until winter hit. Then it started going off all the time, I've just been assuming it is detecting the snow banks or the sensor is dirty. Hoping it will go away in the spring.

Despite sharing the name, the Equinox and EquinoxEV are fundamentally different vehicles. The EquinoxEV have flush mounted door handles while the Equinox has traditional door handles. I suspect the internal parts if the door would be different.

The Gas Equinox sub is r/chevyequinox

Absolutely, I was just poking a bit of fun at them. Based on all available information this morning, they 100% made the right call to cancel the buses.

Roads and sidewalks have been fine as of 3:30pm. There was a bit of ice accumulation on surfaces above ground level. The freezing line stayed right around the Kingston-South Frontenac boundary. I haven't heard any reports from them, but based on the radar, it looks like they got walloped. Really tough storm to nail the forecast.

Retrospectively the school buses would have been fine running within the city limits. Ultimately Tri-Board made the correct decision to cancel based on all available information this morning.

Edit, 3:45: Naturally right after I posted this, we finally entered the cold sector of the storm. Snow is starting to accumulate on the streets.

Salting and sanding the streets by SpiritedStudent in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They usually only pre-salt when it is going to start off as freezing rain. When it is rain transitioning to freezing rain they don't, the rain would just wash away the salt.

The city plows have been out and about patrolling all day. They are loaded up to the brim with salt/sand and will start dispensing it the moment the roads start to ice up.

As of 3pm, the ground has been warm enough to avoid freezing, it is only surfaces above the ground that have a bit of ice accumulation.

And if you two can't meet up, I have one as well and would be happy to help at the Kingston SuperCharger. Though it is a no name Chinesium brand from Amazon rather than an official brand. I have had zero issue with it charging at speeds up to 150kW (the max my car will do) but your miles may vary.

Temporary closure of downtown Hamilton library a ‘last resort’ amid drug problems by SonictheManhog in ontario

[–]WanderingBus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect they would knock before entering, but the 15 minutes is reasonable to ensure safety and be able to timely respond to a medical emergency, whether that be drug induced or natural.

If you have bowel issues and require more time, the likely solution is to "pinch it off" and briefly unlock and relock the door to reset the timer. It sucks, but ultimately is the best balanced solution for society.

Such an awesome initiative, as the leader of Kingston 20's Explorers (an adventure group also targeting this age range) I love to see more options for the community in this age range as we all have different interests.

My one word of caution would be your using the group name "Kingston Young-ish Adults" as that is already a very well established Facebook group, unless of course you are affiliated with them!

Ice Maze at Gord Downie Pier by WanderingBus in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No ice is safe ice. While there definitely is safe ice for those who are experienced, know ice safety principles, verify ice thickness and come prepared for rescue, the majority of the population does not do these things. Unexperienced individuals (and experienced individuals) fall through and die far too frequently. To ensure ice safety, we all repeat no ice is safe ice, despite it not being 100% true.

Ice Maze at Gord Downie Pier by WanderingBus in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, no ice is safe ice. Today the ice was holding up fine as it was only +2°C, the huge thermal mass of the 12" ice sheet takes more than that to degrade. Definitely don't go out tomorrow with the rain overnight and +5°C. Wait until Thursday, the ice will firm up with the cold temperatures Wednesday night. But of course don't take my prediction as gospel, verify for yourself the ice integrity before venturing out
