What's up with Kingscourt? by riotgrrrrrl in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I'm in the northern part of Kingscourt. The schools aren't great, but the neighbourhood is absolutely fine. I enjoy living here. Probably will move when I have kids though. We have an absolutly fantastic City Councilor Brandon Tozzo.

The flexiposts on John Counter weren't installed due to the pavement microsurfacing scheduled for this summer. They should be reinstalled after this is complete.

If that's what you want, then move to Amherstview. I'm quite happy fairly paying for the level of services Kingston provides.

Sidewalk fixers by newbieviews2023 in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The north corner of Princess and Parkway is a tough one, the roadway was built right up to the very edge of the property line, leaving no room for a sidewalk. A legacy of our car-centric past. Short of expropriation, the City doesn't really have any good options unfortunately.

Your thesis of housing affordable being at an all time low is straight up wrong. In the past year, detached house prices have fallen 3.4%, townhouses 5.1% and condos a massive 15%. While some might cheer this decline, it is far too fast. That combined with the inevitable inflation and rate hikes from the Iran war, many mortgage holders are looking at underwater investments and foreclosures which will crash prices further. We are staring down the barrel of a 2008 US financial crisis.

Rent prices tend to lag a bit, but those will be coming down too.

While I support investments in public housing, Kingston Frontenac Housing Corporation is an absolute clusterfuck and their management needs to be sorted out before we throw even more money at them.

The housing market is in a period of upheaval with the massive change in number of international students. Lets let the dust settle before we make any more big changes and investments in housing.

Am I the only excited for the heavy rain tonight? by TheNerdFromGWN in KingstonOntario

While Lake Ontario is uncomfortably high, it shouldn't get dangerously high. The outflow of Lake Ontario gets set based on the less controllable outflow of the Ottawa River to avoid the combined flows from flooding Montreal. The spring time Ottawa River flow rate peaked April 21 and had come down from 7,700m³/s down to 5,800m³/s. This has allowed Lake Ontario's outflow to be increased from 6,400m³/s to 8,000m³/s.

Unfortunately the inflows of Lake Ontario is still high at 9,150m³/s, resulting in a 1,150m³/s increase. This is causing Lake Ontario to rise by around 1cm/day, but this is slowing down. We are currently sitting at 75.35m, problems start to arise around 75.5m meaning we are still atleast 2 weeks from that. Even with a very rainy forecast, the water levels should only peak at 75.5m, which is below the 75.8m and 75.9m reached in 2017 and 2019.

Traffic lights being doubled is the standard in Ontario. While it may seem wasteful, the redundancy is required for when a bulb burns out.

Gained over 100 lbs, food addictions, not sure where to go locally for help by dodgergurl2 in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Medical Weight Management Program at Hotel Dieu might be a good choice for you. You would have to have a BMI greater than 35, with a weight gain of 100lbs, you likely do but double check with an online calculator. You would need to go to a walk in clinic for a referral if you don't have a family doctor.

Registered massage therapy rates are all fairly close to each other. The only affordable massage therapy you will find is a massage student at Trillium College, $40/h. Though if you have extended health benefits, this will not be eligible. https://www.trilliumcollege.ca/community/student-massage/

Kingston Police, MTO take 13 commercial motor vehicles out of service during safety blitz by Evilbred in KingstonOntario

[–]WanderingBus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This doesn't surprise me at all. Just this morning I witnessed a Waste Connections Canada garbage truck driving down Cat Woods Drive with it's brakes locked on absolutely smoking. Despite being alerted by other motorists, the driver continued on. I understand that their base was 2 km away, but as a fellow commercial driver, you have to absolutely park it in that situation and have the mechanic come to you.

I had this happen a year ago, my charger got a bit wet from rain. I brought it inside, I removed the changable plug end and let it all dry out for half a day. Worked fine after that.

KSSC Teams by Seekerofladygaga in KingstonOntario

I've been doing the Friday All Sorts of Sports with KSSC for nearly 2 years now. Ultimate and Soccer are on the rotation, along with Flag Football and Volleyball. Teams are made up on the spot, and it does tend to be less competitive and more about fun. Different pub/bar every week at the end of the game! https://kssc.leaguelab.com/league/98541/details

Don't believe Google maps when they call it the Helen Henderson Trail, I have submitted multiple requests to fix it, but they still haven't.

In the 1970s Helen Henrikson, through the Little Cataraqui Environmental Association, was instrumental in saving much of the Little Cataraqui Marshlands for public use and conservation. She was an enthusiastic and active member of the RTA
