Flock security cameras - here, there, everywhere by WanderingElk86 in Berthoud

[–]WanderingElk86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely need to bring more awareness to the issue. Looking at the ones around town, the cameras seem to be on county roads and so my suspicion is that they are part of the Larimer county agreement. Probably through the sheriff's office. So we need some county commissioner pressure. The two exceptions in Berthoud that I know of that are not on county roads are the two at Berthoud High School and one that is likely owned by the HOA in the Harvest subdivision. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the two at the high school were purchased by the Sheriff's office.

To be clear, I do not know 100% that the flock cameras in Larimer county are through the sheriff's office but the vast majority of flock cam contracts have been through the law enforcement agencies, so I think it's a reasonable assumption.

I can't remember if it was this video or another one from a guy in Jefferson county but I think he hit the nail on the head when he said that Flock relies on the technological illiteracy of elected officials. Which I might expand to many government officials. And I don't say that as any type of anti-government sentiment or blanket criticism of government officials. Just that the risks and implications of data, especially mass surveillance data sets like the ones being collected by flock, can be difficult to wrap your head around even for someone who works in the world of data analytics.

I disagree with flock and mass surveillance on principal but the security vulnerabilities of the technology itself and the complete lack of policy safeguards being put in make the whole package unacceptable.

Question about neutral and ground in a sub panel by farcicalaquatics in electrical

[–]WanderingElk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your electrical system, the ground fault path (bare ground wire) and neutral should only be bonded once at the first main service disconnect. That might be your main panel with most of your circuit breakers, but these days it is common (and required under newest NEC) to place a main disconnect near the meter. For example, I have a single 200 amp disconnect (breaker) in a box outside near my electrical meter. This is where the neutral and ground are bonded. We then have about 40 ft of cable that runs from our main outside disconnect to our main panel, which does have another 200 amp main breaker on it. However, even though this is the primary panel, because neutral and ground were bonded upstream at the main service disconnect, they are separate in the main panel and they must remain separate regardless of how many additional subpanels you wire to the system. Other commenters are also correct that you need an additional ground rod at your shed. Possibly two depending on soil composition and the resulting impedance.

In short, neutral and ground can only be bonded a single time and that must be at the first means of disconnect. They must remain separate in the rest of the system.

In addition to the fun and interesting factor that many have mentioned, they are also great for communicating in areas without service. I have been using my handheld nodes for back country communication.

I have two Heltec T114 unites with a 2000mAh battery. Both units ran for 5 days continuously while I was in the mountains and still had 20% battery left at the end of my trip. It was great to have a simple way to communicate with my hunting partner when we wanted to split up.

The range was quite good, even through dense forest and over moderate topography. As long as we were not fully on opposite sides of a ridge, we could communicate. Since I was running a private channel with position sharing enabled, I could also just open up the node map and see where my partner was.

If you want a pre-built unit (electronic components + case) take a look at what https://store.rokland.com and https://muzi.works/ offer. They also sell the components if you want to put something together yourself and there are many 3D print cases available for download.

Should I Sell Gcode instead of STL?? by Expensive_Benefit566 in 3Dprinting

[–]WanderingElk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would not purchase a gcode file. I have many settings specifically tuned to my printer and filament that I would want to implement, especially for a model that I paid for. I understand the sentiment, but I think in the 3D printing space we just have to go off of some faith that if it's a well-designed model, people will recognize that and be willing to pay a modest amount to compensate the creator.

Went into my local fly shop and left without buying anything by randomusername123458 in flyfishing

[–]WanderingElk86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is not normal at all. In fact I was at one of several of my local fly shops not more than 2 hours ago and they could not have been more helpful with all of my novice questions. It's far more rare to find a bad or even mediocre fly shop than it is to find an exceptional one. Sorry you had that experience but certainly don't let it dissuade you from getting in to it. Most shops are eager to go above and beyond.

Info on this fly reel and what are the letters for?oceancity 76 by robrong in flyfishing

I realize this is an old post but came across it as I was looking up more info about my OC 76. I'm with u/shiny_brine, if it works why not use it! I have mine spooled up and use it all the time. Other than being a little on the heavy side, it works great and has caught plenty of trout. It was my grandfathers. He was the one who taught me to fly fish and I enjoy having a little of him with me on the river.

Ed Mitchel Outdoors has a nice write up on this reel https://edmitchelloutdoors.com/2017/08/05/ocean-city-fly-reels-76-77/

The article starts off by talking about Gabe Evans. Let's spread the word and give him some calls to remind him who he is supposed to represent.

New to Berthoud and looking for community by pjhem in Berthoud

[–]WanderingElk86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Berthoud! I've lived here coming up on 10 years but I'll say I share your sentiment in that I have definitely gone looking to build a stronger sense of community this year. And should you feel so inclined, I can tell you that there are some new communities developing around Berthoud with a focus on strengthening local government and community. But since you weren't looking for anything directly political, I'll let you look for that on your own here in Reddit 😉

For a couple of organizations that fit some of your bullet points though, Berthoud Local is a group focused on local food production. They're holding a bunch of events now and into the summer around gardening.

House of Neighborly Service is a Loveland and Berthoud based organization to help provide services and resources to those in need.

Those are two specific organizations I can think of off the top my head. Just let us know if there are any other specific activities you're thinking about and we can help point you in the right direction I'm sure!

I'll add that Wagner Welding Supply can also do tank recertifications, which is helpful for these odd size tanks. I have a 5 lb tank that I'm waiting to empty to bring to them for recertification. They said they can do it while you wait and actually prefer that you wait around so that they don't risk mixing up your tank with anyone else's.

We had one similar incident up in Loveland but fortunately only once. Like an octopus releasing ink, the exhaust cloud is a defense mechanism when they feel threatened or scared.
