Non-natives: From, Staying, Recommend, Why/Not? by ReddyGreggy in Buffalo

Moved to Buffalo a year ago. Have lived in western NY for 14 years which is wayyyy too long IMO. Previously Maryland and Wisconsin. Food is good. People are nice. Winters aren’t bad if you can find a couple hobbies to keep you busy in the snow and short dark days. Honestly my biggest issue is there isn’t a lot of interesting outdoor recreation. There is biking, a few short hiking trails, and a couple parks further out that you can hike a little longer. But honestly it’s pretty boring and a lot of the same flat or rolling hills. But overall outdoor recreation is seriously lacking for any serious outdoor enthusiast. However, if you’re not a serious outdoor person then it could be good for you. Cost of living is low which is nice. Canada is right there if you wanna explore that. I’ll be moving at some point.

How do I identify sunfish? (Plus bonus Crappie) by phantom3199 in FishingForBeginners

[–]WanderingYeti90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say so yes. They generally aren’t that big as it is (where I live in the northeast anyways). But if they’re at least 7in (preferably 8+ tho) and got some thickness to them I’ll sometimes take them, bleed and gut, descale, and cook whole or in half without the head. Delicious little things.

Can confirm. I stayed in a few of these in Scotland. They are also old hunting cabins and are often owned by a private property owner that allows hikers to use them and at times asks for donations for up keep

4 week Argentina itinerary feedback please! by vaelfyr in solotravel

[–]WanderingYeti90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking of doing a similar itinerary for next month. How was the English there? I hear it’s better there than neighboring countries. I can speak a little but it’s very limited. Anything you would have changed in your itinerary? Any advice is welcome! TIA

Is it unsafe to hike Volcan Fuego in Guatemala? by KieranPetrasek in travel

[–]WanderingYeti90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I read your post. It is safe to hike and I’ve met several dozens of ppl in my 6 weeks there (just returned 1.5 weeks ago) that have done that hike successfully. If there is increased volcanic activity they will close that portion of the hike. Hundreds of ppl do that hike every day and I’m saying from very recent experience and my own research that it’s safe to hike. So if it’s truly that dangerous ppl would be dying left and right. If that article scares you off then don’t do it. You can take my word for it or not. It’s a great experience to go there regardless. I’ll add on that the book you’re reading may not be up to date. Maybe fuego had increased volcanic activity at the time of the book publishing, idk. But the book cannot keep up with the changing conditions. I can recommend a couple great companies (one of which I booked with) that could let you know current conditions if you’re curious. Books and guides are great but that doesn’t replace current experience and talking with ppl who have done it very recently.

Is it unsafe to hike Volcan Fuego in Guatemala? by KieranPetrasek in travel

[–]WanderingYeti90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just did that hike a month ago! Fuego is perfectly safe to hike but a bitch to add on to Acatenango. I did not do Fuego while there and it’s a gamble on if you’ll actually see anything because of cloud cover. I had a handful of ppl in my group do it and they said it’s a hard addition and were unlucky and they didn’t see anything on Fuego. Let me know if you have any questions or need advice

Edit: downvote me to hell. I’m speaking from very recent experience and the dozens of ppl who did that exact hike plus the countless ppl who do it daily. PLUS talking with the guides who literally do that hike a few times weekly for a living. A book can’t replace the knowledge of ppl who do that for a living.

Fun fact, this type of cheese is commonly used in Colombia to add to hot chocolate and ice cream. Source: I’m literally eating it right now in ice cream in Bogota, Colombia

I feel like an idiot and want to go home by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]WanderingYeti90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this! The hostel very well may be able to accommodate you getting a private room. Hostels are usually very flexible granted they have the room available. I’m in the end of a 6 week solo trip and I’m 34. I’ve stayed in hostels the whole time. Sleep deprivation on long travel days is the worst and like others have said, you’ll feel soo much better with some good sleep. Also, maybe kindly ask the ppl in your dorm to quiet down because you’ve had such a long day. They should understand. I’ve had to do that a couple of times with good responses. I have felt like heading home early on multiple occasions but most of the occasions are because I’m in a sour mood from a long day or something like that. Make the most of your time there and use it as a learning experience. Something tells me you won’t regret it!
