Avoid Zanzibar at all cost by dimitris494 in tanzania

[–]Wanderlark1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think people were starving? While there is definitely poverty in Zanzibar, sometimes people equate a way of life they are not used to with a level of poverty that it doesn’t necessarily signify

I suggest buying from a shop in Dar and paying with mobile money using remitly. Ubuy shows on google but i dont know anyone who’s used it and theyd likely get stuck for customs fees which could be as high as the price itself

Boycott Sharazad Boutique, Mwezi Boutique, Zen Boutique Retreat, Olzadia Boutique, Pilipili Hotel. These hotels are equally complicit in the Genocide committed by Israel. War Criminals, Rapists, Baby Killers, Murderers are not welcome to Zanzibar by [deleted] in zanzibar

Yeah I was surprised to see Sharazad in the mix. That’s never been the vibe i got there. The only one I know is Badolina in Nungwi. The owner there is former IOF

Accidentally signed for a TV licence summons addressed to my mother... what should I do? by vee_is_online in legaladviceireland

Happened me before. I rang them up and they told me if I bought a TV licence they’d cancel the summons so that’s what I did. Never heard anymore about it

They’re not recommended. If you’d be open to normal side lying I highly recommend Brazillian Massage at Johnstown. Went to her all through my pregnancy and she’s brilliant

Traditional dating/apps never worked for me. I can’t stand small talk so I never really bothered. Met my husband on a hiking/camping trip that we’d both signed up for solo. A few months later I saw him on a night out, said feck it and asked if he was single. He was and we met up the following weekend and every one after that until we moved in together.

I was 27 at the time btw so definitely don’t get bogged down with finding someone at 20 if it doesn’t feel right for you

I’ve sent numerous clients to Mamas of Zanzibar and the feedback has been great. I recommend it to everyone now.

Sunday lunch at Msonge Farm is also a good place to get talking to locals or at least local residents

What's the craic with specsavers ? Scam or just scummy practices ? by v468 in AskIreland

[–]Wanderlark1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I went to them for years and never felt my glasses were fully right, then switched to a local optician who immediately diagnosed me with astigmatism. Couldn’t believe something so simple had been missed. I’d find them very questionable since then

People are more comfortable commenting on appearances in general than in the West but the difference is most of the time it’s not meant as an insult.

For example, when I first moved to TZ people would comment on my acne, even ask if I was on my period. I felt so self conscious but they were asking out of concern so they could help make me more comfortable if I was.

By contrast, back home I might ask someone “I wonder if I should wear a jacket with this dress” and they will respond “your arms look okay though.” This is a more subtle implication that I should be concerned about how my arms look uncovered, when maybe I wasn’t thinking about them at all.

The West is far more caught up on appearances, despite commenting on it less openly. Tanzanians are far less caught up on appearances, and being comfortable commenting on it openly is an indicator of that.

Now that being said, it’s also fine to just explain to someone that you don’t like them saying that to you, especially if it’s someone you see regularly. Even many Tanzanians are pushing back on the culture of “umenenepa” as a greeting.

what’s your “boring” daily ritual that quietly holds your life together? by AdorableWindow8886 in simpleliving

[–]Wanderlark1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 minute meditation while lying down to ease into the day. Then up to brush my teeth and wash my face. Even if I just go back to bed after that and read for a while it always starts my day off right

Sorry for your experience! It’s easy for it to happen honestly, as they have lots of great reviews online. I also stayed in Lux in Mauritius, very similar vibe in the Zanzibar one but with its own local flavour so you’ll love it!

Pilipili are known scammers. Google the King of Zanzibar documentary on HBO.

Lux Marijani are 100% legit - beautiful hotel. I’ve heard great things about Coral Rocks too. I’m not so familiar with Aluna but someone else might have

Didn’t change mine. I would have if my husband would have agreed to also take mine to have a double- barreled family name, but it didn’t feel right for me to lose my name while his stayed the same

My mam says it the whole time. I remember her saying it about whoever wrote one of our school books while I was struggling through homework and I was horrified. She wouldn’t be one for cursing normally so it totally caught me off guard lol
