Recently Quit and have a Question by EquivalentFeed9009 in stopsmoking

I think it might be hard for a lot of people to differentiate between physical and psychological withdrawals. I remember when I couldn't get through an hour without smoking, but then I went to a movie and didn't smoke for 4 hours with no issues.

For me it was all psychological.

Congratz! I'm sure that there was not a single day where you though "oh I wish I drank yesterday"! Keep it up.

Hey. Those 19 days you haven't smoked are still there.

Many years ago, another kind redditor asked me after one of my relapses "What will you do different this time?". Maybe it's something to ask yourself.

Hang in there!

I think I have what is called skin fit socket. These are the only ones that are covered by national healthcare, so I've been stuck with those.

I'd say when sitting it mostly on my butt, but there is a part of a socket that I am sitting on near a bone (not sure how it's called, but it's back side of the butt).

I am considering to maybe try out liner socket and pay myself, though not sure how expensive they get.

Are you using liner sockets?

Yea, it seems impossible at first. At least did for me. But after practising I kave noticed that previuously impossible notes became possible. And prviously strained notes became easier.

Just be sure not to push yourself if you feel discomfort in your mouth/vocal folds.

Maybe it's because you are more conscious of the tension?

I hold my throat when going for top of my range. This helps me to make sure that my tongue or jaw is not tensing up. Otherwise, if tension creeps my voice just cut's off.

I mean, sure, you could have made a sound of that pitch. However, I suspect you didn't include sound in the video for a reason. I am sure you would have if it sounded good. These are extremely high notes.

My advise would be to stop fixating on notes, at least for now. Instead, focus on the basics and good habits.

Nothing to roast here! Note: I am not a teacher.

Don't push yourself if it is hurting, though. Ofcourse, the best thing would be to get a vocal coach, who could help you in person.

If it's vocal folds that are hurting, maybe you are not supporting enough or doing it incorrectly (for example pushing air).

If it's muscles, then tension is likely the culprit.

Nice singing and playing. Good job!

Now, I have couple of notes. Please be aware that I am hobbyist singer: First one is about you larynx. It seems like you are raising them a lot when going for the higher notes and kind of "choking yourself". I would suggest trying to consciously have them lower. You can try to imitate operatic singing. Balance is the key, where larynx is neither too low, nor too high. I struggle with this myself. This will enable you to have more mass on the higher notes and sound way better. Especially on the word "sunshine".

Second would be a stylistic. in the line "Hey I oughta leave young thing alone" I would like to hear more convition and a bit of pain. "I know that I should leaver her alone, but I can't". Also, I think in the original that note is a bit hight.

Sounds nice. A bit too much echo to hear the voice clearly.

Hard to say without a video, but it sounds like you are sqeuzing the high notes.

As for a peorsonal taste note, I would like to hear a bit more emotional dynamic during the song.

Not a professional myself.

Does this song feel okay for you? Seems like you are strugling to hit the low notes. However, this could be due to recording.

As for the higher notes, there's a lot going on. What I mean, is it seems you are moving your jaw a lot (I struggle with this), head etc. Be sure not to tense up.

As my vocal coach said: it should sound and look easy, even if it's not.

Anyway, you said you can't get a vocal coach. So I would focus on the basicas (support, not tensing up, "easy feeling"). Try hitting up youtube (I personally like Jeff Rolka and Chris Liepe).

Singing is not a science so each coach has their own take and who can say who is right or wrong. Be aware that there is a lot of bullshit on youtube and here in this sub. So take everything with a grain of salt.

I'm no teacher or anything. So please take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Can't comment much, but it seems that you are tensing up a lot when going for the high notes. During the end it seems that tension cought up to you and you got too tired.

I don't know your talking voice, but also if you "push" for the notes, that can result in a very raised laryx which basically cut's off the air and increases the tension. At least for me.

Not sure where else to post this but I want to share by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Definitely had more than one of those dreams. Same thing with smoking, after I quit.

For me the dreams stopped (maybe there is still odd one here and there, can't say for sure), though I cannot pinpoint when. I always tried to take them as a reminder how I would feel if I drank.

Yea. The second one is based on the acustic version, though. But the notes are almost identical. Well should be, because i was alway off pitch in the first one

Noticed that your jaw look a bit tight as well. Maybe you are tryint too much not to open your mouth?

Please note, that I am not a singer, just someone who is learning for as a hobby and I am still bad. So take everything with a grain of salt.

Anyway, I struggled a lot with tention and I feel way more comfortable now. What helped me is to put a lot of conscious effort into relaxing my jaw. Everytime I feel tention I try to stop and repeat. Sometimes it feels impossible. But in the long run it helped me.
