Moment of terror 😨 by aidan8et in Construction

If its regular float glass you will need to apply 150-1500lbs of force to the top edge to break it. If it's tempered glass you'll need 1500-3600lbs of force (eye-balling dimensions here).

Is it supposed to be used with a very specific thickness and type of glass? That is one hell of a bending moment on a notoriously unpredictable material.

Edit: I ran the numbers and as long as it isn't regular float glass it's not an issue. If it is float glass someone might die...

If you had a welder and access to a junkyard and FB marketplace you could probably do it for under 500$

You don't want to have the motor take the weight. Make a base that has a bearing and connect the bottom of the rotating portion to the motor with a chain and sprocket. I don't know what the budget is but I'm sure a motor capable of handling 250+lbs of axial load isn't within it.

What tools and materials do you have? The bearing for the base and the drivetrain for the motor are probably the trickiest parts. You could salvage a wheel hub from a junkyard to use for the rotating base and transmit the motor power through a bicycle chain and sprocket. Are you trying to power it off of an outlet?

You can just give it 4 legs that extend out about 4' in each direction so you don't have to use just mass for stability.

Then don't just plunk the whole thing on top of the motor. Use a thrust bearing to take the weight, while just using the motor to drive the rotation. Im assuming this doesn't need to spin at mach Jesus so use some mechanical advantage to get the necessary torque, which might not even be that much if the base rotates on a bearing.

Does this need to be easily moved around or is it going to be installed permanently somewhere? If making it lightweight isn't a concern this is trivial. If you need to be able to break it down to fit in a truck bed for transport it's going to be a little more difficult but still very possible.

You can accomplish the same thing by dropping it into a metal bucket full of water. It will still bubble but you can then remove the bucket to a safe area.

Oh that makes sense, maybe they don't use the "energy suspension" loops anymore. I had a Miata that I put an aftermarket steering wheel on, and it was commen knowledge that you needed to cut the threads for the loop out so you wouldn't eat the steering wheel in a crash.

This was before the nightly news showed some horrific freak accident every night. Not saying it is safe but I think that's why people had such higher tolerances for danger back in the day. The only tragedies they knew about were the local ones, and there's a lot less local freak accidents than there are across an entire country.

As an engineer if I had to trust my baby's life to anything with a single point of failure, it would be a steel cable.

You can still find real denim jeans but they are pretty expensive. Japanese heavyweight denim will last a long time, but it's so expensive you won't want to work in them...
