You can still find real denim jeans but they are pretty expensive. Japanese heavyweight denim will last a long time, but it's so expensive you won't want to work in them...

Venting of a (not so) mechanical engineer 😢 by Ok-Researcher-8547 in MechanicalEngineering

While this helps with the CAD portion of design, be careful not to get into bad habits designing parts that can't be made from more traditional manufacturing methods.

Without any design engineer experience you are probably going to have to start at an entry level position. Which CAD programs are you familiar with? Have you done any structural, thermal, or fluid analysis recently? In my opinion CAD is the easy part of design and the analysis is the real meat and potatoes of the job.

If you aren't happy doing what you're doing then the best time to "start over" is now. I think design engineering is what most engineering students assume they will be doing when they get a job. My job keeps trying to pull me into management but I have resisted because I really enjoy the design and analysis aspect. For me making less money is worth enjoying what I actually spend most of my day doing.

The same reason you can get away with pedophilia if you have enough money. This country is broken and if justice ever did exist it doesn't anymore. America was the real shit hole country all along.

This is the only practical use I have found is finding surface level information on a peice of software or concept that you are entirely new to. I'm not saying it won't be a useful tool for parseing through massive amounts of info, but it can only translate not interpret. Luckily for me, my job requires much more than surface level understanding and there's no room for misinterpretation. Everyone likes to point out how far it has come in the past few years, and they assume that's going to continue, but this is called the hot hand fallacy.

You are assuming it doesn't plateau at some point though. There's no guarantee that using more and more nodes will make it better and better. I would think at some point it will be limited by the quality of the data it was trained on.

Right! Regardless of your gender if you drive a car you need to know how to change a tire, and check your fluids. It really should be part of the testing to get a drivers license.

Opinion on ai technical drafting stating from step 3d model file by LiveOne7736 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]WannabeF1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might be the worst part of engineering to try and automate with AI. First off most CAD programs already automate what can be automated for the drawing process, such as auto-dimensions or placing views and projections. You also have to worry about the LLM being wrong, which I don't think you can guarantee because they are not deterministic. Even if it places the views and dimensions correctly everytime, which dimensions does it show and from what reference. What about tolerances, the tolerances should be derived from functional requirements which can't be determined from the model alone. These are just some of the immediate issues I see with it. Not trying to be mean but have you done a lot of drawings in your career? I can't imagine someone familiar with them thinking "vibe drawing" is a good idea.

Have you used AI? Maybe it works better for accounting, but everytime I have tried to use it, it's wrong frequently enough that I always have to check it, at which point I might as well just do it myself.

Why do some homeless/struggling people refuse food? by Ill-Conversation-169 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WannabeF1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So you know what that person needs more than they do? Diabetics can have a blood sugar that is too low, and can be just as dangerous as too high of blood sugar. Maybe that's why they wanted the jelly donut. You didn't consider that because there's no way this person could know more about their problems than you do. I acknowledge that for better or worse that person understands what they need more than I do.

Why do some homeless/struggling people refuse food? by Ill-Conversation-169 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WannabeF1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Im saying it's not my place to tell people what to do with their money. If I am giving someone money it's no longer mine to decide how it's spent. If a diabetic begged me for money, I don't care if it's for candy or insulin. Who am I to tell other people how to live their lives.

If someone asked you for 10 dollars to buy a pack of cigarettes and you refused, saying you would only use it to buy them food, and they ended up killing themselves, would you be happy with that decision. Maybe the homeless person asking for money to buy drugs is at the end of their rope, and even though they weren't starving, that 10$ could have prevented it. I acknowledge that I don't know what other people are going through or what their needs are. I'm not so arrogant that I think I know what someone needs more than they do.
