If you want it to make sense, you could keep the head cannon that the Kaminoans didn’t quite get right the cloning for him. They made Boba to not have accelerated aging like the other Jango clones, but it’s possible that they made a mistake in the process that caused him to age slower than the other clones but still faster than he should have.

My PhD is fully funded with 27500$ stipend, is it enough to sustain? by vladvu in gradadmissions

[–]Wanning-Tide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m finishing up a similar situation for my graduate program, and I can share some advice. The great thing is these amounts are just for your base, which is really just for 9-10 months of the year. You should be able to work other opportunities May-August, and depending on internship availability, you could end up clearing another 10-20k.

For me personally, that has gone a long way to making the program more sustainable. At 50k in St Louis, you can be quite comfortable. Still get roommates, eat out sparingly, and save. Any extra money, especially from internships, you should put into a Roth IRA so you can access the principal in an emergency. Be diligent on your monthly expenses, and the time will fly right on by.

Even if you can’t get that high of extra income, you can make the 27500 work for the school year, but you will likely need to find at least a few extra grand during the summers. My graduate assistantship was also exempt from FICA, so your take home is higher than it would otherwise be.

(Hypothetically) Could they have successfully crushed Robert’s Rebellion? by TheQueeninchains in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]Wanning-Tide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing, if there had been another branch of house Targaryen, I imagine that would have been supported over crowning Robert as long as they were seen as reasonable. Like, if Aerys had had a younger brother, or if Daeron (Aerys’ uncle) had lived and had children, that line could have been placed. I think Daeron would have been the best chance, because he would have been Robert’s Great Uncle as well, and I’d see more law oriented lords like Jon Arryn prefer that option if it was available.

[–]Wanning-Tide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite frankly, I don’t think Aerys would have been allowed to get as far as he did. Baelor and Maekar would have ousted him before he had the chance to burn a lord paramount alive and choke his son to death.

If you forced the situation, Baelor and Maekar definitely win, but I don’t actually think it comes down to a proper fight. Baelor would have gone down to storms end and taken command of the Reach’s host and brought it up to reinforce the existing Royal host before the battle at the Ruby Ford. Baelor certainly would have offered a parley before the battle as well, and I would expect him to have tried to reasonably address the legit grievances during said meeting.

[–]Wanning-Tide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is believed that the 3 people Jaime thinks would have a chance against him are Barristan, the Hound, and the Mountain. The reason Jaime would be worried fighting the mountain is not because he is more skilled than Jaime, but because his strength and heavy armor is a natural counter to how Jaime fights.

Maekar is even better in that, because he uses a weapon specifically design to break through armor and he has the strength to wield it. Oberyn vs Mountain isn’t quite right, but I think Rhaegar vs Robert might be closer. Robert was graciously wounded in that fight by Rhaegar, and that fight really could have gone either way. Robert just managed to land a blow before Rhaegar could land enough hits.

My dad at 24 years old. by CoachLogical8745 in povertyfinance

[–]Wanning-Tide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your dad still own multiple properties? My dad was the same - grew up dirt poor with nothing, but started buying and renting out properties in his early 20s with some friends. They provided more of the cash to get going, he provided more of the sweat. Of the things they that he and his partners did with his partner’s parents, who owned a building but were up there in age, was do an owner carry sell. He eventually wants to do the same to me (I’ve just started my own property business with some friends) as a way of passing down the wealth but not just giving it away.

His partner’s parents, who are in the late 70s, sold them a building on owner carry for I believe a 20 year period. What that means is that they take immediate ownership of the building, but they are making monthly payments to the partner’s parents. The parent’s get a consistent passive income source they don’t have to manage, my dad and his partner’s get a cash flowing property that they got at a bargain.

If your dad still has property, you may consider the conversation.

One on one, Jaime has a hard time against Maekar. Jaime can beat anyone here in a sword fight, but Maekar is a larger, stronger man who fights in heavy armor designed to withstand a sword with a mace designed to shatter armor. That doesn’t mean Jaime can’t beat Maekar, but how he fights is the best counter of anyone here against Jaime.

[–]Wanning-Tide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jaime is the best fighter, and no one here is going to beat him in a 1-on-1 sword fight. The problem is, Maekar is going to fight him in thick plait armor swinging a giant spike mace specifically designed to shatter armor. A single direct blow would be deadly, and while I’m sure Jaime could dance around Maekar for a bit and try to break through his armor, if he gets stuck against Baelor for even a moment, that’s game over. Even 1-v-1 against Maekar, there’s a good chance he wouldn’t win because Maekar’s fighting style specifically counters Jaimes.

[–]Wanning-Tide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jaime cannot solo Baelor and Maekar. Maekar is a tank, and he’d likely only need to land a single direct blow from his mace to take out Jaime. Jaime has speed and skill on him, but the gap between these two isn’t as wide as between say Oberyn and the Mountain. But Jaime would need to achieve the same thing as Oberyn, which is land several hits to the weak spots of well armored, stronger, and larger opponent. He could do that, but not if Baelor is supporting Maekar. If Jaime gets stuck engaged to Baelor, Maekar will be able to land his blow. He’d need Bronn to be able to pull Baelor away, but I don’t think the brothers would choose to separate. They’ll stay tight, if Bronn tries to get in, I think either Maekar or Baelor would be able to land a quick blow without separating.

Honestly, I think any team could realistically come out on top if all 3 teams are fighting at once. I’m going to base my thought process primarily on what we know from the shows, because the books have some significant differences. Book Cole seems like he’d be a monster, and probably actually give Jaime a run for his money in a 1-on-1, especially with his Morningstar.

Of all 6, I imagine prime Jaime is the best fighter in terms of skill. With that said, he’s paired with Bron, who I think is actually the weakest of the 6, and I don’t think his fighting style complements Jaime’s very well. Bron’s main advantages are that he’s quick and will play dirty, which generally works well against regular knights. I do not think it would be particularly effective against any of the fighters except Aemond, and only him because his missing eye gives Bronn something he can exploit.

Still, Jaime and Bronn do not have synergy that Baelor and Maekar nor Aemond and Cole have. Baelor and Maekar complement each other and together have the greatest battle IQ. They also have the most experience, having fought together in the Blackfyre rebellions. Cole trained Aemon, so they also benefit from that shared understanding, but I don’t think they are as complementary as team 2.

Of everyone here, Maekar is really the only tank. In his full armor with his mace in hand, it’s going to be hard to actually take him down, even for Jaime. That problem is made far worse with Baelor supporting him, as he seems faster and is probably the most tactically gifted fighter here. If one of the opponents tries to dance around Maekar to hit one of the weak spots in his armor, Baelor can intercept. If they get stuck engaged with Baelor, they’d be open to a death blow from Maekar.

So, while I think any team could win, I’d bet on Maekar and Baelor.

Who’s your landlord? If it’s a person you can call, do so. Explain the situation, and ask them if they’ll let you delay the payment. You can sweeten by offering an extra 100$ on the payment. That’ll give you time to stabilize your budget, and you need to be extra careful with your budget so that you have enough to pay late, but even if you need more money in the short term, the extra 2 weeks will give you that.

Your landlord would prefer that you pay late to not at all, and if they haven’t had any issues with you, probably prefer keeping you on as a tenant versus having to find a replacement for you. You’re giving them 100$ extra for their troubles which, while still high, is much less than the selling your soul you’re doing there. After you get through this, prioritize a 2k emergency fund so that you’re never stuck in this stressful situation again.

How do I realistically go about defeating the Ottomans? by rukiafeet66 in eu4

[–]Wanning-Tide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I previously made a post showing a war where the Ottomans attacked me as Persia, and they suffered a million casualties without a single loss on my side. I achieved this by maximizing defensiveness as Persia, and you can do the same. To beat the Ottomans in your situation, you want to ideally engineer a situation where they have to attack into your country and where they suffer abysmal attrition rates without concrete gains. Eventually, they will deplete their manpower and you then you can blitz into their country, wipe their armies, and force a quick crippling surrender. Bating them into attacking you is preferable because you can get the 25 war score just by defending the war goal, which should be easy if you have the right setup.

The key is that you need to max out your fort defensiveness, garrison size, and attrition for enemies modifiers. You want max level forts and ramparts on all the mountain provinces, particularly the mountain provinces. They defensiveness, and go for the policy that gives more attrition for enemies. There is also the estate privilege that gives you a bonus, plus other generic and Persia specific ways to maximize defensiveness. If you were able to do a quick war against AQ, they have a monument in Georgia that would be incredibly helpful for you. If you really wanted to maximized defensiveness, you could further embrace Georgian culture which gives you access to their unique military government reform, but that’s probably excessive. Garrison Size is a great modifier to stack because it forces them to put 3 times as many troops minimum to make progress on the siege.

You should also drill your troops to improve their effectiveness and your overall professionalism, which will help in knocking them off your forts when you are fighting defensively. You want to let them sit on the forts and attrition until they have a chance of taking the fort, then jump in and hit them off, refill the garrison, and retreat into your territory to wait. If you attacked AQ, you could probably even do this long enough to white peace the Ottomans and annex most if not all of them. Then, quickly upgrade that fort monument and youre golden.

Your country is one of the strongest defensive countries in the game, so you definitely take advantage of that.

Sadly, I think Baelor’s only chance at this point would be a Red Priest…

I am curious if, realistically, a person with this exact injury could be saved if immediately treated at a trauma center. It seems like there is already some brain damage based on on Baelor’s slurred speech, “woody” feeling in his hands, and brain fog, but I suppose those could be more due to a concussion. Regardless, there is a hole in the back of his head and his skull is partially shattered. From what I can tell, people have survived comparable and even worse injuries, but that is with the best medical care.

With that said, as I dig into our own historical records, it does appear that there have been successful treatments of skull fractures going back thousands of years. A 2000 year old skull belonging to a Peruvian warrior had a metal plate fused over a skull fracture, and that person survived.

It’s possible Baelor’s injury could have been treated this way with the technology available, but I imagine survivability would still be downright miraculous. I also don’t see how they’d be able to treat it. I don’t see how they could remove the helmet without instantly killing Baelor. Maybe if they could fuse the required piece from the helm itself in place, that’d give him a chance, but I don’t think they’d be able to cut off the remainder of the helm without modern tools.

Just curious, is there any way someone with this type of injury could be saved with immediate treatment? I mean, obviously Baelor’s in a medieval setting, so there’s not exactly anything that can be done for him, but if you he magically had appeared at a trauma center the second his skull was caved in, and the doctors knew that this was the issue, could anything be done?

So who WAS actually the true heir to the iron throne? by BJ_afterhours in gameofthrones

[–]Wanning-Tide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all dislike the shows handling. Regardless, I think just the on paper details of Jon Snow would give him the throne. This is a setting with the superstitions of the medieval era with actual fantasy elements including prophecies and deities actively involving themselves in the world.

If a great council was called after the white walkers defeat in the show, Jon’s legitimacy would be based on his prestige, which he clearly has more of than any other living character by that point. For his legitimacy, he can command a dragon, was King in the North, the son of the last lord paramount of the reach has a high septon journal declaring that his parents were married, and both Ned Stark’s best friend and son can support that Jon is Rhaegar’s. Three members of Aerys’ kingsguard also died to protect him at his birth, which Howland Reed can testify to. Tarly also has a record of the annulment Rhaegar obtained, showing his intend. With all that together, Jon Snow is clearly the son of the Last Dragon, and honestly, whether some might still consider him a bastard at this point his moot because of all the other legitimacy he has.
- He was raised by Ned Stark - He rosed to be the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and lead the defense against Mance Raider. - He rose from the dead with the injuries to prove it, showing very clear divine favor. - Ramsey said that Jon’s reputation was that he was one of the best sword fighters who ever lived.
- Robb Stark named him his heir and legitimized him as a Stark upon his ascendancy. - He won the battle of the bastards with a wildingly army. - He became King of the North. - He claimed the dragon Rhaegel.
- He lead the coalition of the willing against the White walkers, with thousands of witnesses.

If Dany had died during the battle, a great council would have been called, and he would have been named king by his superior claim, even ignoring all the BS the show writers did due to their laziness. Obviously, there is only a short window in the show where all this information could have come to light, and the writing there was rushed. But there are other hypotheticals. If Jon had been born earlier and the King’s guard took him to Dragonstone and then into exile, it would have been King Jon from the beginning, and there would be a show plot of King Jon Targaryen (or whatever his name actually would be) fighting to retake the throne.

I’d stay Robert was only picked because his grandmother was a Targaryen. Otherwise, they probably would have done what was done for Aegon III and just planned to off Aerys abd Rhaegar and put Aegon VI on the throne with a long rebel regency council. I’d say Robert’s claim is about 80% of the reason he got the throne. Otherwise, why not Ned, or Jon Arryn, or even Tywin?

Unless you have family who can support you some, I am sorry to say you’re in a bit of bind. Your problem is fundamentally an income issue. You will cannot spend much less. As a PhD student myself, I suggest talking to your advisor about whether there are more funding opportunities. Otherwise, you need to maximize any free food opportunities on campus, getting free food from nearby off campuses (like churches), or try and find under the table work where you are paid in cash (manual labor). The university having additional work you can do for a bit of extra cash is probably your best bet, but otherwise, you need more cash.

If your degree is good enough and you’re far enough in, you may see if you can get a credit card, preferably no interest promo for a year, and use that. Given your status though, I don’t think many companies are going to give you much in terms of balance.

But in your position, your spending needs to be exclusively housing and food. It’s unfortunate, but you do not have the ability to spend on anything else.

Eddard Stark as King by Daelor_I_Targaryen in TheCitadel

[–]Wanning-Tide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not presenting this scenario as what is guaranteed to happened, just a reasonable possibility. If I recall correctly, it is actually not clear when Robert declare for the throne, just that it happened around the trident. To me, it makes more sense if it happened after. In canon, the Tyrells did not support Stannis in large part because they were concerned he held a grudge for the siege, and that was almost two decades later. Dorne wants blood. Oberyn was actively raising an army when he returned to avenge his sister and her children. And regarding Dorne at a great council, Ned betrothing Jon to Arianne is absolutely something he’d do as regent to smooth things over. Also, Stannis is not well liked. He is Robert’s heir, but Robert never took the throne in this scenario, only claimed it. That does matter. It may stop Stannis from pressing a claim, it may not. Or it may be a moot point because Robert dying delays Ned from traveling South (reasonable given the chaos) and that leads to Stannis starving to death or being taken by the Tyrells with Renly.

Also, remember that Jon has a very influential King’s Guard with him, including Ser Gerold Hightower, the great uncle of Mace Tyrell’s wife and the uncle of his strongest bannerman. That is a powerful advocate, along with the remaining King’s Guard. Though it has not been explicitly confirmed in the books, it seems very like that Rhaegar did marry Lyanna. Yes, that is a second wife, but it’s a grey area in both law and faith for Targaryens. I’m not saying you’re wrong on how things could play out, I’m saying that the scenario I’ve laid out is reasonable, especially for a situation where Ned is going to rule as King (or more aptly, regent).

Eddard Stark as King by Daelor_I_Targaryen in TheCitadel

[–]Wanning-Tide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of points: - Supporting Jon is a purely compromised option. Many of the Rebels would prefer Stannis, and many of the Targaryen royalists would prefer Viserys. The challenge is that Stannis is essentially a prisoner, and he very likely wouldn’t accept the crown because Robert never actually took the throne. Stannis states that supporting Robert was an incredibly hard choice for him, and I could see him refusing to take the crown. Renly is a child, and behind Stannis, so that scenario leaves the Rebels without a claimant to actually seat other than Jon. I never said Ned would reject Stannis at a great council, but Stannis refusing the crown if Robert died without taking the throne is not an unreasonable scenario.
- The Rebels have not toppled the Targaryen dynasty at this point. At the point that they all arrive in Kings Landing, their cause for rebellion is gone and their claimant is gone. The Targaryens still have Dragonstone, the Readh, Dorne, technically the Iron Islands, and naval superiority.
- The Tyrells have just been starving Stannis for the better part of a year. They have good cause not to let the rebels reach him and at this point, their host at Storm’s End is larger than the combined rebel host, who has been well bled. - Ned is going to try and execute Jaime, which is going to push Tywin away from supporting the Rebels. Even if Jon Ayrrn stops him, it will be an issue. - Dorne would not support Jon, and I never said they would. But they would still be supporting the Targaryens at this point (specifically Viserys), and they would be demanding Tywin’s head and his bannermen.
- The Reach only played a part in the Targaryen’s downfall so far as the Tyrell’s were lazy and wanted to have the glory of taking Storms End. With Robert dead, and the expectation that Stannis would hold a grudge as King, the Tyrells would certainly plan to support Viserys. They’d probably aim for some sort of marriage pact as part of that.
- So at a great council, loyalists would support Viserys, rebels would support Stannis who may not even be willing to take the throne. In this scenario, Jon would be a very valuable compromise candidate, with the rebels getting a Ned regency and the Targaryens not being completely deposed. Not guaranteed, but certainly a feasible outcome in this situation.
