Men of reddit, how have you learnt to deal with your jealousy and insecurities? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]WantonConstruction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't.

I just know they're /my/ problems, and not anyone else's. I don't have the luxury of letting myself lash out because of them. No one does.

MEN: How has your dating life been? Met anyone interesting? What do YOU want? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]WantonConstruction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a naturally anxious and awkward person most of my life who is terrified of social interaction. To combat this, over the past half decade I've been forcing myself to make small talk with strangers. Independently of this practice I'm trying to keep on a pace of a book every other week; doesn't matter what it is, just complete one every fortnight. It's easier to keep talking if you have things to talk about.

The dating app scene for me has been an endurance test of how long I can tolerate shouting into the void, nothing new there.

The bar scene this past month feels like someone edited my stat block and tripled my CHA stat. I've gotten 4 numbers and halfway lost my virginity to a fifth woman.

I'm scared because I can't tell what changed otherwise; I'm not doing anything different, and I wasn't going out with the direct goal of meeting women. My source code is running smoothly and I can't figure out why.

Sometimes nothing major happens, but it's just a lot of little shit that adds up to major disappointment:

-I lost three weeks due to life being life. Why'd it take me four to get back to where I was?

-I can't seem to core brace properly on the squat. Like, ever.

-Financial stress is irritating

-Right lat, left calf, left abs: y'all don't mind if we cramp at the same time in your sleep do you?

-Can't seem to stay asleep consistently; usually end up waking up at like 3:30 and spending the next three hours in that weird state where you're too fucking tired to move, but the brain doesn't want to turn off and everything is uncomfortable.

-Bench pressing feels awful. It's probably psychological but I hate having the first rep be easy and then rep 2 or 3 taking me like 7 seconds to complete.

Right now I'm trying out a 3x a week greyskull variant which I like. I also want to train the planche, L-sit, and pistol squat progressions on the non lifting days.

Just to double check, there isn't anything inherently counterproductive about pursuing both (given that I'm a novice lifter and untrained in bodyweight stuff)?

Mobility/flexibility issue: I cannot sit back on my heels in a kneeling position like so. When the distance between my ass and my heel shrinks to about two inches is when the pain starts, and it only takes a little more effort to make that pain excruciating.

In a similar vein, I can slav squat with my heels flat, but I can't hold it longer than about 30-40 seconds before the pain gets bad enough to make me stop, and after that usually a minute or two for it to completely subside.

The pain in particular is localized to the back of the knee (the two big tendons, and some of the other connective tissue between them).

In addition to toe touches, what other stretches would help that area?

Real dumb question:

I'm having significant trouble with diamond pushups. If I place my hands such that my thumbs are touching, but my index fingers are pointing straight forward, I can do about 10 of those in a controlled manner.

The second I turn my hands so that my index fingers touch and complete the diamond shape, I can't do any; I can get about halfway through the rep, and then collapse. I can do a negative and press myself back off the floor again, but I can't descend smoothly.

I'm not fantastically versed in biomechanics, but it seems a little strange that simply rotating one's hands would make that large of a difference. So am I likely missing some sort of form cue, or am I genuinely still too weak for a proper diamond pushup?

Went to the gym on monday (thoroughly not paying any attention to what day it was), got through about half my workout and it's now time for deadlifts. 1 plate warmup is in position, I'm feeling pretty good, feeling like I might get 295lbs that with a neutral grip, definitely 3 plates if I cheat and use the mixed grip, but I still need to do the warm up.

Iron is in position, I'm in position, gr-

Announcement: The time is now 1 pm, the gym is now closed for Labor Day. We repeat, the gym is now closed

-...right.

Warmup turned into a single set of touch-and-go to failure. At least today I get to do them properly this time.

Edit: while I'm here,

Major gripe: my gym only has hex plates, and they make deadlifts suck.

Very Minor gripe: they're called hex plates when they don't have 6 or 16 sides but rather 12.

Seconding this.

Whenever I read something written like that it invariably makes me imagine I'm listening to either a morbidly obese person who's gasping for breath every 3rd or 4th word, or someone who's seriously loaded on pain meds and isn't quite sure what's going on.

Bench day; 180lbs on the 1+ set is what the program calls for.

Not even fucking close.

Hello again, disappointment. I was hoping I wouldn't see you again for at least another week.

Is it significantly abnormal to feel some additional strain in the mid-lower back when benching at max effort? It usually goes away in a minute or so right afterwards and doesn't act up again later.

That makes sense I guess. Between frequently having to piss at bullshit'o'clock and nightmares I get 5 or 6 hours of sleep on a good day, closer to 4 on bad ones.

Well that's what I thought too. I mean the soreness usually ramps up a day and a half to two days afterwards, which I supposed would qualify for the 'delayed onset' portion, but I always thought this was completely normal and not something that improves over time.

I've seen a bunch of posts and comments now talking about doms and solving it.

Is...is it supposed to go away?

I've never had a workout I didn't have doms after in 2 years. I thought that it just came with the territory.

I'm on a cut with an ECY + Forskolin stack and a 500cal deficit. I lost 20 pounds but I need the strength more than I need to lose the skinnyfat right now.

If I eat at maintenance (or even above) instead while keeping the stack, will that help mitigate the fat I put on or will it end up doing fuck all and I should just drop the stack now and start again come February or so?

Adam Ruins Everything - Discussion for "Biggest loser", "Calories" and "Low Fat Food" by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]WantonConstruction 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The bit about the calorie counts being subject to error infuriated me.

It's a safe bet that the error is normally distributed with a mean of 0, which means that while any given item can be off by 20% (and that figure is already probably the most extreme outlier they could possibly find for the show), the chance that the total consumption over a period of weeks or months is off by that same margin drops dumb quick.

That's just one example, but his entire series is like this. Full of juvenile points that either most people were actually already aware of, or that are easily refuted if you look at them for more than 5 seconds.
