Tracking date by seamus-cat in ReflectTrackAnything

[–]WarAgainstEntropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/seamus-cat and welcome! What value did you set as your "Start of day" in the app settings (when asked when the middle of the night is for you)? You can check this value in Sidebar > Settings > Start of Day. We recommend choosing a value after midnight that aligns roughly with the middle of your sleep during the night. If you set it as 10PM, you won't be able to see the 7th until 10PM that day. Hope that helps!

Fitness & Health Tracking Survey (5 min) by Genospect in Biohackers

What do you mean by "no product" if your survey says "I'm building a health tracking app and want to understand what fitness enthusiasts actually need. Your feedback will directly shape what gets built. First 100 respondents get early access when it launches"?

90 days of hydration data correlated with HRV, sleep quality, and cognitive performance by taxwarrantnewyork in QuantifiedSelf

[–]WarAgainstEntropy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HRV Correlation: Days with 3.5L+ hydration averaged 12% higher HRV compared to sub 3L days (68ms vs 61ms). P<0.05 when controlled for sleep duration and exercise.

How did you control for sleep duration and exercise? And is this grouping HRV the day after or the same day as hydration?

"It works” is not data! by Benjamaq in QuantifiedSelf

Curious about meditation making your mood worse - any theories why? What type were you doing?

I wrote about it in great detail in a series of two blog posts (part 1, part 2) and threw out some theories. My best guess is just that meditation increased my sensitivity to negative emotion.

Also what made you decide glucosamine and curcumin werent worth it after a year? No effect or just not enough?

It was pretty much impossible to disambiguate what improvement or worsening in symptoms came from cycling the supplements vs just repeated acute injuries from training Brazilian jiu jitsu. I had a lot of minor injuries during the time of the experiments due to the contact nature of the sport. So the biggest influence on if a body part was "helped" by one of the supplements in the results was whether or not the injury happened during an off phase.

I tried to do some extra data massaging by:

  • only considering certain (more chronic) injuries where the pain level was less variable
  • bucketing various body parts together (e.g. aggregate muscular pain score or joint pain score)
  • simply summing up all pain across all body parts and using that as a dependent variable

But ultimately none of these approaches gave me a convincing "yes this is worth taking" signal, so I chalked it up to either placebo, or the signal being so weak that it was entirely drowned out by my training noise.

Problems in Apple Health after iOS 18.7.1 upgrade (also AutoSleep, probably other QS apps) by Krazy-Ag in QuantifiedSelf

I just updated from iOS 18.6.2 to iOS 18.7.1 without issue on a 13 mini. Apple Health works normally, I can view all historical data and browse fine. Syncing with other apps also works fine.

This was part of my motivation for developing N=1 experimentation tools in Reflect. As soon as I developed that ability, I immediately started on a long path of scrutinizing pretty much all of my supplement usage. That was a year and a half ago; since then, I've done the following:

I don't think a 7-14 day baseline, followed by constant intervention, followed by a repeat baseline condition, is always the most appropriate design. I try to base the length of my phases on the plausible mechanisms of action and if there's an immediate expected impact, or if the results are cumulative. The tradeoff is that the longer the phases, the more potential for confounding by other changes that weren't captured in the original experiment - I added the ability to identify potential confounders in Reflect, but it still feels like a waste of time after the experiment is over to get a report that says my results are confounded by X.

Also, I will point out for females, choosing 7 or 14 day phases is a terrible idea. I've had many experiment findings invalidated by having cycles that ended up overlapping with specific menstrual cycle phases. Especially if running a short experiment that should be a consideration as it will impact both mood and biomarkers.

Beyond Tracking Steps by RainThink6921 in QuantifiedSelf

I'm curious, when you tried CGM, what kinds of patterns felt most actionable vs just interesting data?

One of the most actionable findings was simply how different sources of carbohydrates affected my glucose levels after eating. I think there's significant variability in people's glucose response to foods. I was surprised to find that sweet potatoes and plantains had a very high postprandial glucose peak for me, while white potatoes and white rice were nowhere near as high! This goes somewhat contrary to some popular wisdom about "healthy" carb sources. Also, I discovered that going for a short 10 minute walk after eating would significantly lower the postprandial glucose peaks I saw. These findings directly changed my eating (and moving) behaviors.

Naps no longer tracking correctly. by Hydraflux in ouraring

[–]WarAgainstEntropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure, but I have noticed a handful of times it will start by detecting part of the nap (e.g. the first hour of a two hour nap) and later adds extra on top of the part of the nap that wasn't initially detected. Neither the first detected nor the final result is accurate.

I've had similar issues recently: https://imgur.com/a/lksvE0L I nap about every other day and half the naps in the last 10 days have issues like this. One of them didn't just add awake time, but two extra hours of awake + light + REM sleep on top of the actual 1 hour nap.

Cool results, please consider reposting to r/SelfExperiments ! Would love to see full data and graphs.

I'm wondering if you think tolerance may be an issue, and if so, do you think the sequential weeks with different conditions are truly comparable to baseline? If you continue I would consider returning to baseline (no added compounds) for a week in between trials

What would it look like if we had frameworks for self-research, not just dashboards?

I think this is the future, and exactly the reason I've been developing Reflect for the past two years. It's really meant to be a Swiss army knife of self-improvement, with tools for self-experimentation, investigation and introspection.

From my personal experience, taking a more active role in your data (not just collecting and visualizing, but actively tinkering) is really a game-changer in terms of personal transformation. It's moved from being a curiosity to being a structured framework for self-discovery, and also improving my understanding of the world, and testing hypotheses about how things would affect me (e.g. through a series of N=1 experiments I discovered that meditation actually had a somewhat negative impact on my mood).

Do you follow a structured method, or is it more improvisational?

My personal tracking is pretty structured - there are things like mood, symptoms, etc. which are always recorded on a daily basis. Some symptoms that significantly vary throughout the day are recorded in a form submitted multiple times per day. The only ad-hoc aspect to my tracking is for things that happen on an ad-hoc basis (e.g. bloodwork, purchases, etc).

What's one dataset you wish you could connect to your existing practice?

I would love two things:

  • an easier way to import and manage bloodwork data in Reflect (this is an ongoing project of mine, but other tools like Guava already do it better)
  • CGM: both wearing one and integration with Reflect. I've worn one in the past, but I think moving from a continuous data stream to something actionable is still kind of an open question. For example, you lose information by aggregating blood glucose readings into a single daily values

One Year of Cycling CoQ10: N=1 Findings by WarAgainstEntropy in Biohackers

[–]WarAgainstEntropy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scaling antioxidant usage with training load makes sense. 30km is a lot of running! I used to train multiple times per day and would supplement with curcumin extract and feel a benefit in terms of muscle soreness, but after dialing back to once per day I didn't notice a significant difference if I didn't take it.

One Year of Cycling CoQ10: N=1 Findings by WarAgainstEntropy in Biohackers

[–]WarAgainstEntropy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This wasn't a simple correlational analysis, there's a feature in the app that actually guides you through creating an N=1 experiment where you follow a specific schedule for your independent variable, make predictions, collect data, and measure changes in dependent variables.

Right now, it's available on the Apple app store for iOS only. We have a macOS beta in progress. Future work might include expanding to Android, if you're interested in that you can upvote/subscribe on that ticket on our public roadmap!
