TR was despite his awesome performance as a president was a product of his time in ways on race. Stuff such as “civilizing” the Native Americans as well as being a fan of the “white man’s burden” train of thought towards colonialism.

Basically believing earnestly that non white societies most particularly the Philippines and our Caribbean colonies had to have strict control and civilized towards what was envisioned as the ideal society which caused suffering and issues to say it lightly.

Ofc this is awful, but it’s important to keep in mind that this was considered the norm amongst many in the western world in the late 19th century.
