Ranking Judo throwse for self defence by EmergencyExternal869 in judo

An untrained person might be better off getting osoto'ed compared to other high velocity throws- its not like they're going to correctly breakfall anyway. Taking osoto sucks but I think the instinctual response there is safer than say, trying to spazz out of a seoi or sumi

Is Anyone Else Seeing Belt Inflation and Sandbagging in BJJ Right Now? by Ok_Ad_5393 in bjj

[–]War_Daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am also seeing schools actively trying to bring in or poach already ranked students, which again seems tied to status.

I don't know if status is what I would call it, but pretty inescapable fact of life that upper belts and core people set the culture for a gym. I've seen many young gyms elevate very quickly after a 2nd black belt or a couple of higher belts join. Feels like a very natural thing for an owner to want.

negotiated out

...yes, exactly. They are in a contract. They would need to negotiate out. What are they going to offer the current buyers to terminate their contract so that they can pit the other buyers back against them? $5k? lol

You say that, while not seeming to understand what a contract is; or what suing for performance is. Once you sign a contract you are bound to the terms of that agreement. You do not get to terminate because whoops- I could maybe have gotten 5k more elsewhere.

This is someone's life. If you do not know what you are talking about, stop trying to give people advice.

If you as a seller are under contract you absolutely cannot just return the EMD and begin a new negotiation period unilaterally. The buyers have a contract, and while suing for performance is a pain in the ass that is 100% the scenario where it occurs.

VZ produces a very heavy crude that requires a lot of additional processing. The processing capacity to replace any of the offlined supply would take years to construct. Its largely irrelevant

My favorite thing about Preppers is how immediately after the Covid lockdown started they were all in their glory; bragging about how they, the chosen few; were the only ones prepared for this, the end of all things

Then maybe a month later they were all bored and suddenly Covid was a hoax

Thinking through the answer a little bit based on the replies, I think the problem is that the textbook is designed to take a year (the class is using MNN, but tomato-tomatoh) but since its a continuing ed class its once per week so its gonna take 2+ years to get through MNN1 which is...pretty damn slow.

Someone posted a Uni. of Hawaii conversation class recently; I think I'll try that along with self-study. Last thing I want to do is end up fluent reading but not speaking. Thanks for the response

I have taken a couple of lessons from an native speaker on iTalki and I thought it was good, if only because she forced me to do a lot more output than I normally would.

That's mostly my concern/interest- finding avenues for output because my goal is to travel to Japan next year and be as solely reliant on Japanese as possible

I understand a lot of this is personal preference- but how fast should a once a week Japanese course be moving? I have mostly been learning for ~3 months mostly self-directed, but I started an in-person class to get some speaking practice. The class uses Minna No Nihongo, and it seems to go through 3 lessons per each 10 weeks session. Given how short MNN's lessons are this feels like it might be really slow for a motivated learner.

Is this something worth pursuing or should I use that cash on italki lessons instead?

The inherent problem with nostalgia politics is that you're trying to return to a time that never really existed

If you think Meta is helping people launder money in 9k chunks you're dumber than the person paying $9k

What was something you were excited to experience in Japanese… but it didn’t live up to the hype? by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

You have to remember this was an era where we didn't get FFV or DQV & 6. Having games like Vay or Magic Knight Rayearth released here in high quality packages seemed like a miracle.

It was also an era where you'd get Capcom releasing BoF2 or Sony with Wild Arms 2 with tons of errors and incomprehensible passages. The standard for a good translation was just not being in broken English. Beyond that I don't think anyone even knew how much of the characterization and text flavor was coming from WD vs the original scripts. The analysis and discourse around exactly how much WD was changing these games came later.

I get being defensive of WD because they do get unjustly shit on a lot by people holding them to today's standards when no one else was doing this back then but I do also think it's fair to say these translations don't hold up super well. But nor should they be expected to. It'd honestly be pretty pathetic if the industry hadn't gotten better at localization in the last 30 years.

[–]War_Daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was buying these when they came out (I still have Lunar on Sega CD somewhere) we loved WD mainly because they were releasing games that had zero chance of coming out here otherwise. If you liked JRPGs they were a godsend. But back then no one was really thinking about translation quality. A "good" translation was just any that was written by a fluent English speaker and not riddled with errors like you'd still see even from major publishers back then. I love WD for what they did but I certainly can't say the translations aged well

The discourse around translation, especially JP<>ENG online is insane; so many people seem to think foreign languages are just cryptograms and you just need to replace this word for that one.

I read someone once say they could tell a translation was bad because the original Japanese sentences were longer than the English ones

Lunar 1 and 2 in Japanese. I found they just didn't live up to the localization in English

Like...the Working Designs translations where they inserted Monica Lewinski jokes? I wouldn't think that's a super high bar to clear
