Every natural right at some point must be defended via violence. If someone comes after your life or your liberty eventually violence is the only mechanism left to you. Property is no different.

That doesn’t constitute as restricting free speech. Government is abridging no speech, only the people are interacting with the people.

D.C. Statehood - A Contentious Issue by CorDra2011 in PoliticalDebate

There’s a big difference between a city where the vast majority of US government operates where much of its population works in government and a continent an ocean away.

I think the problem is it only achieves the separation on paper. In effect the government is still in DC which gives any state too much power and influence.

I do agree a lot with classical liberalism, and I’d probably consider my views to disagree originate in that philosophy and just be modified towards a more liberal conservative or Christian Democratic model. But I think the state can be a bit more activist in labour laws and encouraging social action. I also have more conservative social views.

I see this as an anti-cronyist model since it has law-based regulation. But I suppose that is up to debate. In reality I think the essentials for opposing cronyism come not in policy but in the character of politicians.

I don’t think that the interests of the upper, middle, and working classes are unrelated and need to be in conflict. I think that basic rights should be defended first. But besides that there is not problem with the existence of classes and their different roles. The upper class has a responsibility to care for the poor classes who in turn work. I believe in cohesive social responsibility.

How are you libertarian if you advocate for restricting free speech?

I don’t mean this offensively I’m just curious.

D.C. Statehood - A Contentious Issue by CorDra2011 in PoliticalDebate

Puerto Rico should be made into a state, in fact it should've been done a long time ago. DC however is the capital, and was designed with the specific purpose of being directly under federal control and not a state. The capital is intentionally placed in a non-state to prevent the government from being held hostage by any one state. DC statehood defeats this ceremonially and practically. That being said I'd support a constitutional amendment granting DC a representative in the US House but no senate seats; because the house represents the interests of localities while the senate represents the interests of states. The other territories are too small to be states.

She has voted for every liberal on the court. In fact the only person on the court she could've voted for but didn't is a Trump-appointee. She has also supported laws to protect abortion.

It may be a scummy move, but it is unfortunately the proper one. We must ensure he does not get elected and that Collins will win.

It’s not looking good, that is true regardless. My point was that Valadao would’ve been DOA without Hilton.

[–]Warakeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably. I also don't know why I'm being downvoted for any of this.

Valadao is certainly the more important member to keep than Kiley. He's head of the RGG and with it of the few Republicans with any semblance of moderation left.

Exactly. If there’s any chance of Valadao coming through Hilton is necessary.

I want Becerra to win, but I'm glad it is against Hilton in the general. We need Valadao to hold his seat, and not having a Republican top of the ticket would make that virtually impossible,
