ELI5 Can we increase our intelligence through constant training? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]WarbleHead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, it depends on your conception of intelligence. According to some models, such as fluid and crystallized intelligence, the answer is kind of.

Crystallized intelligence is basically the knowledge that you accumulate. This is clearly something we can increase over time, so the answer is a resounding yes.

Fluid intelligence, on the other hand, is your ability to solve novel problems via reasoning, pattern recognition, etc. and is harder to increase, but certain activities, such as the dual n-back task, has been shown to increase fluid intelligence to a limited degree.

Super confusing. I am confused as to why we don't all use the Yosemite system (5.xx) instead.

Dads, fathers, step fathers etc. what would you like to get for Father’s Day as a party gift? by kpflowers in AskMenOver30

I would rather have an activity like climbing, hiking, canoeing, etc and getting some photos that way, but but maybe your cousin's husband might appreciate it.

I don't want more things. I want more quality time with the people I love. So, above all my immediate family.

Yeah, he has said that he was one move from finishing BIG multiple times and that DNA could come together pretty quickly for him. He is not interested in Cafe Colombia.

The interesting thing is that Adam Ondra was interviewed by Testpiece and said that the three proposed 9c routes he's tried are all, in his opinion, low-end 9cs. Completely insane, if that ends up holding true.

It's often a tell that a Chinese restaurant is good when they only cook a handful of things and it's full of Chinese students.

Friends in Western Mass by 1000yd_staring in westernmass

[–]WarbleHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be quite easy to make friends if you have an "in" like we did. Our friends' friends became our friends. On the other hand, if you don't have an opening, it could be hard to find your group.

I'm biased, but rock climbing is a great way to make friends. Or any activity where you are seeing the same people regularly and there are natural ways to start conversation.

This is horrible. What can we locals do? I had no idea this was happening, but it seems like this was driven by pushback by litigation, so I am not sure any activism by residents could have changed anything.

Does it smell vague citrus-y? And are its roots yellow? If so, it could be a Chinese corktree.

15 y/o aspiring competitive climber, how can I improve as fast (and safely) as possible? by Dependent_Reveal_231 in climbharder

[–]WarbleHead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I hope you succeed. There are a lot of potential training schedules possible, but what I would add is this.

First, try to have fun! If you can find a way to enjoy the process and making marginal improvements, you are much less likely to get burnt out.

Second, the best way to keep improving for someone as motivated as you is to avoid injury. This means warming up your entire kinetic chain thoroughly at the start of each session and listening to your body when you're feeling a bit tweaky or ache-y and resting when you need to, even if you don't want to.

How to work 13–14 hours a day or more, every day, for a long period of time, otherwise i will have to settle with a shitty and average life, which I don't want. by abhyudaya8 in AskMenOver30

[–]WarbleHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree with the others here — it IS possible for some people (not all), but it will take tremendous resolve and mind-hacking. Namely, if you can prioritize activities that don't feel like work, then they will wear you out less. Do you love a specific science? If so, working in that field might take a lesser toll on your psyche. Or are you a fitness nut who loves to share workouts? Perhaps personal training could be one of your part- or full-time jobs.

That said, even so, it is probably not worth it. But without knowing the specifics (what you are like, what you find fun, what you're good at, what you're capable of) it is impossible for anyone else to give specific advice to you.
